For those of you fortunate enough to order the new PBs what made you pick the size you did? I'm especially interested in why someone would chose the 12 over the 15.

I have a 12". Main reason is its size. It has more or less the same functionality as the 15" except for the pc card slot - but I don't have a card to put in anyway (a friend of mine is a photographer - he can't do without it for his card reader and has a 15" TiBook).
I also have a 17" iMac, which is my home office machine. The 12" is for on the road. When travelling, smaller size is a big plus. If it would be my only machine, I might consider a 15", because the 12" screen is a bit cramped for daily (office) use. You could also consider getting an additional monitor; 12" + monitor can be cheaper than 15" while giving you more screen space.
For desk-work the 15" would be very well suited, but don't forget to get a decent keyboard and put your PB on a stand.
Hey, is you have airport and a BT keyboard/mouse, all you have to plug in is the charger!

I appreciate the reply. Most days, I have to haul a huge briefcase so the small size is appealing but of course the larger screen size on the 15" is awesome. It's a hard job to pick between two beauties...

Hopefully today is the day

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because airborne says it's out for delivery...

Only time will tell!

I have yet to order mine, and I am still hesitating between the 12" and the 15" (well, sort of). At the moment, I got a iBook 12", and for what I use my mac at home, the size is perfect. And I saw a PB12" (the old model) the other day, and that thing feels sweet. Against it, I'd have to say the size of the screen: I'm used to enormous screen size on my Mac at work, so I feel boxed in when I use my iBook.
The last point is that I buy a new laptop once a year (almost) and the higher pay for it new, the more I lose when I resell it after a year (yeah, I know I'm tight...).

I'm typing this on my blueberry iBook which has been (is) a little workhorse and I've really got no complaints except I've got an injury from hauling heavy briefcases and the weight is too much for me to carry to work anymore. (When I first got it I got ribbed for carrying a "purse." After a while when my co-workers saw how neat it was they decided to put it down to a slight eccentricity on my part. Funny, when a guy from a competitor made some remark about it, one of the guys responded with something like "we put a premium on productivity..." hehheh [although I'm willing to admit that the graphite one might have made things easier].) Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Keep it coming.

I chose the 17 for the screen size.

While not a desktop replacement, per se, I need all the screen real estate I can get when I'm not in my office. Tons of windows, like to be able to see without scrolling.

It IS a hard decision that will come down to this: What do you want more? More portability (Lighter, easier to transport/carry) or closer to a desktop replacement (heavier, but more screen real estate).

My current NB is an original TiBook 500 15.2. I love it, but I'm sure going to love having all those extra pixels :)

Good luck!

Well guys I am still in the same boat I was in last week. Powerbook cleared customs (according to the waybillnumber) on the 24th, but Airborne still tells me my Powerbook is stuck in customs. Is anyone else still having this same problem?

I feel your pain!

This weekend the tracking number I had for my PB stopped working :(

Called airborne today and they said it is out for delivery... I'll take that with a hugh grain of salt, because I also have a spare battery being delivered today, so it may just be that. The PB tracking number STILL doesn't work!

ARRRRRGGGGGGG!

I don't even know where this "WayBill" number is. I only ever got an e-mail from Apple, which had the tracking number for the package. No mention of Waybill, and now I'm wondering whether the package is being delivered today.

Latch problems

Hello.

I received my new 1.25 BTO G4 on Thursday. It's very nice and fast. However, I just sent it back to Apple this moring for service (1 week appr. return date) for a latch that won't close properly. It pops open 8 out of 10 tries to close it. On the positive side, the screen is clear and no dead pixels. That makes me feel good since my last laptop had 3 and then after 4 years of use it got abig green line that spans a third of the display. So I was ready for a nice display for a change.

Anyone else with latch problems???

Thanks.

Stephen

FYI - This seems to be an issue for many or most new PB owners... Over at MacInTouch.com , most describe getting it to function properly after a few days of use.

YMMV ;)

The waybill number is located on the actual invoice Apple should have emailed you. I received 2 emails from them... one with the invoice and one stating it had shipped (which apparently means nothing).

Wow, having to wait from july to march...
Is there any possibility to cancel your order? I think you can just pick one up from a local reseller before that scheduled ship date. Or are you hoping to get the G5 PB that will be introduced at MWSF?
:D

M.

In America, 9/7 means September 7, not 9 July.

I play live with a 12" iBook, love the size but I need a bit more power "don't we all" so I can say if you go for the 12" it will be a really cool machine.

I've got a 15" 1.25gb on order and the reason I've gone for this is not the screen size but the extra stuff like the keyboard backlight, this will be very useful on stage.

So go with your heart they are both wonderful.

As you can tell I love my Mac's, can't wait for the G52G & 23" LCD to turn up.

I just got my powerbook and the only two word i have in mouth is

WOOOOOOOOOW.

AMAAAAAAZING.

Screen is so clean ... Everything work fine

No more wintel laptop for me Apple got me

Latch Problems....

Previously when I first got my 15" PB I did have problems making the latch stick but after using it for a while now i think its finally got it. I don't think you should worry about taking it in to get worked on over a simple little latch problem.... not so quickly at least. As for the ONE dead pixel i have..... well its a bummer and i'm just gonna have to get use to it. As my co worker says "Its not a bug... its a feature."

12" over the 15"

I bought a 12" (Delivery tomorrow!) and I'm using it for school (PhD program, Biochemistry/Molecular Biology) as well as recording music with Logic and Firewire MOTU 828. I really labored over the decision to get the 12 over the 15, but it just came down to portability. Everything on the 15" that the 12" doesn't have are really perks, to me at least. Having a sub-5 pound laptop that fits nicely in a backpack is a great thing, especially when USC makes us park a half mile away. I feel like I'll use it more if it's not as forboding. Additionally, I can watch DVDs in the library without drawing as much attention. Sure, the bus speed is slightly slower, and the PCMCIA slot is missing, but it's not going to affect me. Also, I have a 17" LCD monitor at home so I can hook it up to that for those times that I need multiple windows open, like with Illustrator and Photoshop. All in all, I realized that I was wanting the 15" purely because it was bigger and faster, like any good american that buys into the hype, without realizing that a 12" was what I really needed. Who knows, I hope that I don't regret my decision, but for now I'm really looking forward to having it (as I type this on a Dell boat-anchor Inspiron 5100)

Thanks to all who have posted about their reasons for choosing the 12" or the 15" PB. I'm leaning more toward the 12" with a larger studio monitor for my desk...

keep leaning

And keep in mind you can span the monitors, so you'll have all that real estate on your desk monitor in addition to the original 12" screen.

My 12" pbook is probably sitting half-assembled on the factory floor, waiting for a 60GB drive. If I'd ordered a stock model I think it would have shipped by now. I'm trying to convince myself that in about 18 months I'll be glad of that extra 20GB.

If the ship date slips AGAIN (orignal 9/25, current 10/3) I might crack, cancel the order, and settle for a stock unit from the local mac shop.

Get a 12" + a 20" monitor (or 17") for when you are home...

It's finally shipping!

After ordering my 12" PB on 9/3 it is shipping 9/30! Finally! I'm not sure why on the site it says Shipping=Bestway? That doesn't make any sense to me.
I'll let you guys know when I get it! I hope the Customs dude doesn't fondle it for too long! :D

My new 15" is also supposed to ship today, according to MacMall ("will ship between 9/26 and 9/30"), however, I checked the order status and everything shows as 'backordered'. It's still early here on the east coast and I can only hope that later this pm, it will indicate that it has been shipped, I need it for the weekend!

Just curious, where did most of you buy from? I went for MacMall to save on tax and get the free ram upgrade (512 X 2).

12 inch, shipping from MacMall today!

Good news. My 12 inch is shipping from MacMall today. Which means I will have it tomorrow. YIPPY!
