mommy, i want a new computer

ok my speculations were wrong, i thought they'd wait for seybold fair to announce, but i think the pressure was too big. i'm sure this is not the only update on the powermacs this year, and it sure isn't bad, last time they had one they only went up 133mhz or something like that, now they jump up... hey about the same... only this time they don't make a fuss, so next time, they make a fuss that is, it better be a G5
:p

You are right

btw ... i will not be waiting for the G5 .. because i (almost) never buy first generation architectures .... the 933mhz is mine!

Definitely true...
But maybe I wait for the G5, and buy then a dual 1 GHz G4 at lower prices...

why don't they have the gforce4 thing on the front page of apple's site and call it "the ultimate gaming machine" or something like that?

i think this is a major breakthrough for apple and just as cool, almost, as the new imac

apple got a 9 out of 10 in my book on this one

my ultimate hope would have been 1 ghz low end, dual 1 ghz in the middle, and dual 1.2 ghz top end so that way apple would be fully in the 1 ghz club and be over 1 ghz somewhere in their pro line

now no one will call apple a mhz machine anymore

$3299 - Dual 1Ghz G4 - same cache - 512 MB SDRAM - 80G - CDRW

$4549 - Dual 1Ghz G4 - same cache - 1GB SDRAM - 72GB Ultra 160 SCSI (10000 RPM) - CDRW

... Available in February

So why NO Superdrive in the servers ?? And why no RAID ??? I am now considering to buy a new G4 with Superdrive as a replacement for my 260 MHz G3 ASIP 6.3.3 server, since the DVD-R or DVD-RW is an ideal and inexpensive archiving and backup medium...

this is quite a bummer for me, i just bought a g4 733 for $1700 15 days ago. now the low end is -$100, 24x cd burner, and 256 ram, thats double for 2 things over what i just bought for more money.

will apple do anything to make me happy? i want that 24x cd-r, mine came with a 12x (which really isn't that great) and only 128 of memory? could i get some money back, or maybe an upgrade?!?

what do you guys think?

NO!!! Apple will not do that for you. How do think they remain profitable quarter after quarter when all the other PC manufacturers are losing millions???

Why did you buy a 733 when everyone was talking about something new areound the corner???

most consumer computer stores have a 15 to 30 day return policy, no questions asked. Just return your computer to where you got it, if they ask why, tell them it turns out you couldn't afford it. Then go somewhere else and get a new one. Of course, this probably won't work if you bought it from the applestore, so I hope you didn't do that!!

What I *really* want is a 933mhz with DVD/CD-RW (dunno exactly what it achieves, but I don't think my life is complete without L3 cache).

Bad news: cannot strip the Superdrive from this model. Why?!

After some sulking, was overcome with desire to buy new 800mhz with DVD/CD-RW and GeForce4...

Good news: UK customers no longer ripped off - GBP1299 vs USD1799 in this configuration; GBP1299 = USD1830.

Bad news: DVD/CD-RW configuration cannot be ordered at present! Store reports 'available late February' but will not accept order.

I WANT TO SPEND MONEY!!!

Apple's return policy is a ten-day window, and the buck stops there.

My ideal machine would be the 933Mhz. However, with the Superdrive it pushes up the price just too much!! Why cant apple offer the DVD/CDRW as a build to order option??

Tired of the B.S.

You know, I couldn't even read all the comments on this topic, so it is unlikely that people will get to the bottom to read mine, but....

How annoying is everyone here who is say 'These new machines are great, but....'! For a couple years we have been sitting here bitching that we don't have a Ghz mac. Now we have an incredible machine, a real PC beater, in the dual Ghz G4, and all people are saying is 'But what about the G5?'. I personally don't think we'll see the G5 until next February. I think we may see one last good speed boost out of the G4 line. But it doesn't matter! The current line kicks a.s.s.! Stop complaining, Apple just released everything we ever wanted! Unless you spend 10 hours a day in OS X working on maya, this machine is too much for you to handle!

Speaking of which, I am so psyched to see OS X under this new machine. It should scream! Hopefully we'll see true dual-processor support for all Adobe applications soon too. Oh, life is grand, kick a.s.s consumer products, kick a.s.s pro models...and now for a moment to be a hypocrite, I wanna dual processor PowerBook! (but that's just me dreaming)

So everyone, please, please be proud of Apple and not knock 'em for a job well done!

The soothing balm....

Well, well, well. All the rampant speculation can be put to an end, at least for a little while. Apple has delivered the goods. Just ordered the dual Ghz machine. Can't wait to get my programs up and running. As a aspiring CG artist, rendering is a necessary pain in the keyster. But man, 15 Gigaflops per second will make it oh so sweeter.

great job apple

What a great update, Apple bumped almost everything about the powermac up and finally broke the ghz barrier. Plus with the L3 cache and new chip architecture they sound pretty damn fast. The thing that is the most exciting for me however is the geforce4 exclusively for the mac now. How cool is that? This update should definately support strong sales well up to the G5's release at new york. Wish i had the money to buy one of these.:D

Quantom???

from apple.com
------
With a quantum increase in processing power, an ultraefficient new system architecture, next-generation 3D graphics....
------

It might be me that is totally outdated on physics...but quatom

cut from OmniDirectory
-------
quantum
n : how much there is of something that you can measure [syn: measure,
quantity, amount]
-------

Quantum increase means a increase that has the atomic size of messurement. That is the smallest increase possible...

But it looks to me like the are going to fly.....

Oh yeah - to all those that have asked - the DP800 I'm selling *does* have the SuperDrive in it.

I think selling a DP G4 800 purchased within the last 6 months, now, for a DP G4 1GHz is a bit rash. I don't think you are going to feel the night and day difference that you apparently imagine exists there.

You'll have to keep us posted.

display(s)

a little off-topic but i'll ask anyway: could someone give me a recommendation(s) for a display(s) to purchase with new dual g4 powermac?

in other words, is the 22" cinema display worth the bucks?

and...any rumors about the anticipated 19" lcd? should i wait for this announcement?

given the extension of the lcd rebates to 31 march, is it likely that a new lcd (i.e., the rumored 19") will be released prior to march end?

thanks in advance for any help.

ps the 'rumors' (and related threads) are generally very well done...worthwhile reading, indeed...

I'm holding out.

Not so much for the G5.. but a faster bus.
it's still 133MHZ ... Still using the old ram..
..USB2? Gigwire?..Slow ATA..

There are lotz of wondeful boosts, but
I think the "real" juicy boosts are being held back.

DDram, Faster ATA's, Duel 1.?...

What ATA speed does it have? ATA/100? 133? 66? If it's 100 or 133 (I suspect 100), I'm happy with it. Heck - I do DV captures via my ATA/66 PCI card all the time and it's overkill for that.
