3. I've used a non-Apple Pencil stylus on an iPad and played around with a friend's Note device. It is not fun. Taking notes without being able to rest your palm ruins my handwriting (even worse than it is right now) and gets tiresome quickly.
4. 5. It sounds like extra steps to make it into a contact. Also, can it add to existing contact? I've encountered situations where I sync'ed my contacts with Facebook but some friends did not elect to share their phone number. Creating multiple entries for the same contact is messy. Also, what if the phone number is an office phone? Home phone? Cell? can it detect those? It would be important to differentiate multiple phone numbers.

- Type name
- Type phone
- Tap Done

I could have even done a 3D touch on Contact's icon on the home screen, swipe up to go into "Create a contact" immediately. Would have saved me an extra tap.

Samsung
- Pull out stylus
- Hover or tap the pen icon to bring out the widgets
- Tap memo
- Write in name
- Write in phone
- Tap Save? Or was it "More"? I forget
- Tap some button that scans, again I forget the wording
- Tap "contact"
- Review that Samsung OCR'ed it correctly
- Tap Save

Many more steps and much slower on the Note.
That's not even close to how the Note works. Here's how it works: While the phone is off, pull out S-pen, write name & phone number down on the screen. Put the pen away. Done. When you're ready to call that person, open up the written note and call the number directly from there.
 
Nah, the funniest part is that the Galaxy S phones sell a fraction of the iPhone.

I am pretty sure it is closer than you think.

Current model S8/note8 most probably sell 70 mil combined. Apple sells 200+mil a year and how many of those are current model?
 



Samsung today posted a new video on its YouTube channel called "Samsung Galaxy: Growing Up," which follows the life of a young man as he purchases Apple devices over the course of ten years, and then decides to switch sides to Samsung on the eve of the iPhone X launch. The 1-minute commercial features the song "I'm Moving On" by Chyvonne Scott.

The video begins at the iPhone launch in 2007, and subsequent years show the main character facing storage issues when taking a photo and waiting in long lines under poor weather conditions for the latest iPhone. At one point, he drops his iPhone in water and has to place it in a bowl of rice, while his girlfriend's Samsung device continues to function.


Other points made in the ad center around the iPhone's lack of stylus support, as well as its need for dongles after the removal of the 3.5mm headphone jack in the iPhone 7. The ad ends with the character's decision to turn off his iPhone and purchase a Samsung Galaxy smartphone, and he eventually walks past a line of people waiting for the iPhone X -- including a guy with a notch-like haircut -- without joining them.

The latest Samsung smartphone is the Galaxy Note 8, which launched in September with dual rear cameras, a 6.3-inch AMOLED 'Infinity Display', and a new and enhanced S Pen with improved pressure sensitivity. Many publications favorably reviewed the Note 8 prior to its launch, agreeing that the lack of an explosive battery made Samsung's newest device a step up from the Note 7.

I think Apple would be happier if they could give out a way to diversify it's products. Relying on one, essentially, is suicidal.

Then what about Google? While Apple might get 60% of their revenues from the iPhone, Google gets almost 90% from ads.

Further, Apple makes its revenue from a desirable product that people actually want. Google makes its money from something people hate, and are always trying to find ways to block.

It's going to be funny when the S9 has a notch next year. Not sure of any way around it right now and Samsung needs to keep pace with Apple, ditch the bezels and sloped edges as they are useless.
You've mentioned bezels in several posts. Not really sure why. Which phone do you think has more bezel, the X or the Note 8?
 
Funny because it's true. Kinda brings you face to face with all the compromises you’ve knowingly dealt with as an iPhone user through the years, and the fulcrum point of wondering what’s the merit continuing in the same direction. After the iPhone 7 keynote, and despite being an early adopter since the first iPod models, I’ve been at the same point too.

If I continue using iDevices it’s just out of sheer habit & ecosystem lockdown.

PS. Noticed the shorter lines compared to the original iPhone release? ;)
 
Funny but not that funny. I was almost expecting a car to hit him while crossed the street without looking. But that wouldn't have made the point for Samsung...

I doubt it. Samsung ASP is too low for them to sell that many.

Besides, we’ll never know how low sales are because Samsung stopped reporting them back in 2014.

Samsung should know by now that this kind of advertizement don't work, a teenager would get this from this ad:

"iPhones are cool, they might lack some feature but are more desirable, people line up for the iPhone, if you want to be cool get an iPhone!"

I mean i have seen more Apple than Samsung in this Samsung ad.... are we sure it is not an Apple Ad?

Compromises? The Note 8 won’t get Oreo until 2018. It’ll take 6 months after release to get Android P, which will be its final update. Android is a huge compromise in updates/security, pretty much the most important part in any OS.

PS: Notice Apples record quarter? And guidance for monster record setting numbers next quarter? You think lines matter?
 
I think the best takeaway from this is that both devices (and companies) are FAR from perfect and they both know it. They're struggling to develop truly useful new features but are determined to squeeze as much profit as they can out of the current form factors, so they're competing on branding at this point.

The worst part is that even without truly useful new features, prices are rising.

You make it sound like using an iPhone is some sort of hardship. Like driving an older, unsafe car vs. a newer one with a good safety rating.

Shorter lines?!? You couldn’t preorder the original. Apple sold less of the original than they did of the X on launch day.

You'd think companies would have learned by now that ridiculing the competition is not a winning strategy. As an iPhone user, why would I want to switch to a product from a company that has basically told me I'm an idiot for not buying their product I the first place? Nobody ever wins a debate by insulting a competitor. If anything, ads like this make Samsung look as though they are desperately trying to hang onto their existing base rather than expanding it. If they feel their product is superior, as I would expect them to, they should tout its superior features, not try to make people who didn't buy it feel stupid for not doing so. Apple got away with "I'm a Mac ... I'm a PC" because it was genuinely funny, but I'd bet they found that after a while, even that campaign became counterproductive. To win in the marketplace you need a truly superior product and good marketing that PERSUADES, not ridicules.

The Mac commercials were great and if you remember the Mac guy was sympathetic and wasn't negative towards PC. So much better than this Samsung ad. I bet they don't play this ad very much.
 
Samsung has a great marketing team, its a well made video.

Wont do much though, Apple dropped this tactic awhile back with the Mac vs PC commercials. All it does is give spotlight to your competition and piss off potential customers.

I also remember back then being pissed that Apple was basically insulting me since I used Windows.
