Like it or not, there are many, many, many, many people who have the "if it doesn't run iOS, I don't care what it is" mindset.

This isn't going to change their mind.

...but this ad probably wasn't for those folks anyway I guess.

Truth is Samsung..

You had Smartphones before Apple and they were crap - Why would anyone hand the market over to your or microsoft who also had smartphones before Apple. It took Apple to push you into doing something better - Apple users don't buy into size, they buy into much more.
Lest we forget that you didn't even have an App store? Even Apple recognizes that the App developers is what made the iPhone great and by opening the platform to the greatest talent in the world has hurled Apple forward. They continue to add new technology with every new phone for the developers to figure out how they are going to use this new tool.
I've witnessed the greatest software advancement over the 5 or so years than I've seen in the previous 20.
Samsung, you are good if there is competition and then once you've conquered the market, you sit on your Laurels - just like microsoft.
The world has changed since Google and Apple have decided to give something of value to their followers. Samsung does not give back. Although, I do own one of your TV's and you still haven't mastered the app's section and find myself using Apple TV.

This is an example of one of the golden rules of advertising. If you are Number One, you laud your own accomplishments. If you are Number Two, you bash Number One.

The camera in the S5 is good as is the camera in the 5S and no doubt the 6 and 6 Plus. That said, it can take an incredible amount of time to actually *take* the picture on the S5, which has been well documented.

Speed in taking a picture is pretty important to a camera, especially speed to focus.. People where wondering how come the S5 with was slower to focus when it supposedly had AF? Still a mystery. Probably some software sluggishess; there is so much software bloat on Samsung phones.

Ask any real photographer. So, is white balance, accurate color reproduction and low light performance. All of those have the 5s being a better camera than the S5 which came out 7 months later.

Not quite sure why Samsung has so much difficulty putting a a top notch camera in their phones since their compact cameras aren't bad at all. Sony has the best compacts though.

I am an Apple guy, never owned and don't believe ever will own an Android. Yet I am afraid to say, Samsung is right. Apple fanboys made fun of the large Samsung screen, and Apple specifically said we create iPhones smaller so you can use them with one hand. Now they have changed their minds.

As far comparing yourself with others, Apple does it all the time. Each keynote they pull out numbers and brag about their market share and make fun of the Windows platform. They make fun of the defragmented market.

Making fun of competing products is lame, but when what you say is true it works.

Your entire post couldn't be more off base. Where is your prof that it was "Apple Fanboys" that made fun of Samsung's larger screens and for you to call yourself an "Apple Guy" wouldn't that put you in the category of an Apple Fanboy?

Apple's keynotes are seen by a small group of people, Apple employes, Apple Developers, tech media and Apple enthusiasts. The rest of the world doesn't bother with looking at keynotes so for the keynotes reaching out to the public it's a very small amount. Plus Apple compares what they have to offer to their customers vs the competitors. They aren't desperately doing damage control by putting out terribly insulting ads in national TV to be seen over and over by people that don't even care and insult their competitor as well as their competitor's customers like Samsung constantly does.

Here's another point, Samsung KNOWS their phones no longer have a competitive advantage and they have to rely on Google to make Android competitive enough to take on Apple which isn't happening. This is why they are now desperate and they are very threatened they will lose their very own Android customers tomApple this time around.

These are the actions of a desperate company. They're not trying to gain iPhone customers anymore. They've officially written those people off. They're now trying to stop the bleeding and convince their own to stick around. I have never seen a company attack another company's customers like Samsung. It's unbelievable.

The Mac vs PC commercials were in a different stratosphere, btw. Those also were the result of a desperate Apple trying to establish some sort of foothold in the PC market. They managed to eventually do that, but not because of the commercials. That's a different story.

Point is, the barrage of attack ads is a sign that the writing is on the wall for Samsung. I'm not saying the company is going to tank, but their growth days seem to be over for now. Their pipeline is unimpressive, to say the least.

100% this, I couldn't agree more. Samsung are trying to stop people who own a Note and perhaps any other Samsung Mobile device, from switching over to Apple. It's a business strategy. However what annoys me, is when they plainly lie in their marketing ads.

Somehow I knew this picture would surface in this thread. Very sad. This pic is so disingenuous and misleading. There's no denying the level of similarity between the iphone and the GSII, but can we not use doctored images to prove our point? There are far more accurate representations that show the similarity of the form without changing the actual size of the GSII, and images that actually use home screen to home screen instead of the GSII app drawer.

Hard to critize Samsungs ethical behavior when we engage in the same activity.

You're better than that.

 I've never understood the complaints about using the app drawer image. After all, it *is* one of the standard marketing images released by Samsung.

The big mistake Samsung is making with these ad's is they are insulting potential customers, whether they be us as consumers of their phones or Apple as a consumer of their screens and chips. What company on the face of this planet wants to insult customers ??? I guess we found the one.

There is going to be a multi hundred post thread about this ad on this site. That is why macrumors posted it.

Kaching!! Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money. Yep that's why. And that's fine. This site is a money making venture. It was not set up out of the kindness of someone's heart to provide a forum for us über Apple geeks to congregate.

Not really. I had a Sony Ericsson P800 back in 2003. That was a smartphone with a fairly large touchscreen for the day. Heck, Nokia had a touchscreen phone about that time but then decided that the market didn't want one and so abandoned it.

The Ericson P800 had a 2.9" screen, running at 208x320 (4096 colors), which was, indeed, quite the large screen at the time. If Samsung can be credited with releasing a larger-sized screen with the Galaxy Note in 2011, then Apple can be credited with releasing a larger-sized screen 3.5" in 2007.

Boy Samsung can make a fast ad. There commercial company must be on call 24/7.

Never seen a company turn ads so fast, quality aside of course.

Well, they do supply apple with their displays, so I would imagine they had some ads ready to fire.

Aside from the tech glitch ones they sent out after the keynote.

How is it working when they have been losing sales and profits for I believe four straight qtrs?
Samsung has the problem to be "squeezed" between Apple/iOS and some other Android manufactureres (HTC, LG, ... with their premium smartphones) in the premium segment of the market and its rising Chinese competitors in the low price segment of the market, not to forget Google with its smartphones and tablets.
So Samsung has to compete not only vs Apple/iOS, but in addition also inside the Android market against two sides. Whereas Apple has the "advantage" to have only "outside" competition, and not to have additional competitors within the iOS market.
If you prefer iOS you don't have much choice. There is only the iPhone with 1 or 2 different new models each year. But if you prefer Android, there is not just Samsung, but many many different manufacturers with many many different models coming on the market almost on a monthly basis.
You don't have to be a genius to predict that Samsung will have big problems to continue to hold its actual market share and profit margin in this situation, considering the fierce competition.
So besides Samsung very aggressive and military style company philosophy this might be another reason why it is doing such an aggressive - many here say "desperate" - advertisment campaign.
But this has nothing to do with the fact that Apple entered the "big" screen smartphone market as a "latecomer", after a long time finally giving up the former standpoint that people don't need/want big smartphones. That is just how it is. Why not just admit that?

Apple Doesn't Chase Features

Apple doesn't chase features (most of the time) and tries to bring a feature that has value beyond for the side by side comparison list.

Samsung does introduce new features, but many are just "more chrome on car" types vs. something that is well thought out.

Samsung has introduced a new ad for its upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 4, talking about how the company first introduced the Galaxy Note series in 2011 and popularized the "phablet" form factor while calling out Apple for making the similarly sized iPhone 6 Plus three years later.

YouTube: video
The ad begins recounting the history of the Galaxy Note before talking about some of the features of the device, like multi-window multitasking and its S-Pen stylus. The ad then shows articles from online publications criticizing Samsung for releasing the original Galaxy Note due to the device's large size before showing articles praising Apple for releasing the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

Finally, the ad shows select tweets from users criticizing Apple for releasing the iPhone 6 Plus three years after Samsung started the Galaxy Note line of devices. The commercial ends with the release date for the new device.

Samsung has continually created advertising going after Apple, its products and its fan base, famously depicting people ogling the Samsung Galaxy S2 while waiting in line outside an Apple Store for the newest iPhone mode. More recently, Samsung published a series of web ads poking fun at Apple's September 9 special events and rolled out a "Wall Huggers" ad campaign that pokes fun at the iPhone's battery life.

Brutal.. Just brutal. Worst series of adds I've ever seen. Surely even Samsung mobile users/fans are ashamed.

I'm glad Apple doesn't have to stoop this low in order to make their products look better.

Mac vs PC. Enough said.

All companies do when they are trying sway people from what is popular. From food to kitty litter. They all bash each other.

Don't think apple is above that.

yes really. if the ad did not exist, there wouldn't even be a discussion. guaranteed that many forum members sent out an email saying "check out this ridiculous Samsung ad". those people will forward to other people and so on. Samsung paid money for the ad, and they let people like you carry it on for them. it's brilliant. if the Samsung ads were not effective, Samsung would stop making them.

how quickly you forget Apple's early ads taunting IBM...or perhaps the "I'm a Mac" ads where Apple taunted Windows at a time when Apple's market share for personal computers was pitifully low.

the one-side fanboyism always comes out in MR when there is an article about a Samsung ad. i thoroughly enjoy calling out each and every one of them - and that looks like this go around includes YOU

Did you not read what I posted? I even mentioned the Windows attack campaigns in the early 2000's that you quoted...
and talk about taking things personally... I never "called you out" so grow up, you delinquent. Learn to read "words" rather than assume.

Just because we acknowledge on an Apple fan site that a Samsung product exists doesn't mean that we are influenced to buy them. While making a commercial about how Apple has a "big phone like ours" is a little petty... but on top of that it does make aware to people who are not tech savvy (like the people who frequent this or any tech blog site) about the existence of a larger iPhone. The old "I'm a Mac" ad didn't inform you about the existence of Windows computers' features only that Windows exists. As much as you'd like to think that a blog post on MR can influence the rest of the world on things this site is completely niche and only Apple fans would already be here to begin with.

If you can't comprehend what I'm saying then I'm sorry, I won't keep conversing with you. I really hate having to spell things out to people I try to have a conversation with on this site, it's like you're some hurt puppy looking for a fight... and if that's the case. I'm out.

What does admitting that have to do with my post that you responded to.. of course apple is a latecomer, how could I even deny that if I wanted to?

The post that you quoted was asking how is their marketing campaign a success if they're losing money and sales. Would you like to answer that and not invent strawman arguments?

This whole phablet thing was really a damned if you do, damned if you don't thing for Apple. If they continued to avoid it, they'd get criticized, now that they've jumped in on it, they're accused of copying.

Last add ran in 2009. Different era? First, look up the definition of era.

era: a long and distinct period of history with a particular feature or characteristic. "his death marked the end of an era"

An 'era' isn't a specific span of time. You can refer to 'the era of the Mac vs. PC commercials', which started when the first such commercial aired, and ended when the last one stopped airing. The defining feature of an 'era' is that some event marks the start of it, and eventually some event marks the end of it, not that it is any particular length, nor that it has been any particular time since it ended.

The old "I'm a Mac" ad didn't inform you about the existence of Windows computers' features only that Windows exists, which anyone who used a computer between 1988-2000 already knew. Could be possible. I've never seen the app drawer used in their marketing. I can't claim to have seen all of Samsung's marketing images either. However, that image is designed to deceive, especially when taken in it's context. But hey, if they use the same image, I could concede fair game. What's not fair game is manipulating the size of the device to make it appear more similar than it actually is. That's just bs.
