It is cute how Apple still take their entire store down to add a new product line. I don’t quite ‘get’ why they still do this. Can’t be a technical limitation must be a conscious decision. Odd given that they’ve already had the hype of the event earlier in the week.

Yeah, I have been around Apple and their "love gaming talks" for a long time. Actions speak louder than words...

When the first iMac was launched even Jobs stated that "we (Apple) love gaming", and talked briefly about the great games coming to Mac OS (stuff like Unreal), but there was no Mac capable of running these titles decently, especially that iMac.
So, stating "we love gaming" and then releasing the new consumer Mac with very, very poor grfx hardware... hmm... Imaging buying the new iMac and Unreal, installing it... running at and trying to play a "slideshow" at very low settings

Later on you could empower your Gx Power Mac with a 3rd party grfx cards to boost gaming. (Had a 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500 in a 400 MHz G3 what was very cool - still have that setup BTW). So if you had chosen a Power Mac (aimed at professionals) you were able to play Mac OS games pretty well with aftermarket cards, but iMacs... no... only very recently has that become "okay".

Same goes for nowadays.
Apple suddenly 'loves games" as it helps them make money. Simple as that. 30% from the iOS App Store revenue, and being able to boast about the grfx performance of the iOS devices.
And that's fine of course!

But, Apple will never "love" gaming, in the way that Apple will dedicate hardware to it.
Mostly agree, but I think Apple *wants* to love gaming. The problem is that they love hardware control and healthy hardware margins more.

PC style gaming means easily upgradable parts so your hardware can stay at the cutting edge. Apple’s GPUs are occasionally at the cutting edge but usually at such a premium and without a clear upgrade path that they lack traction. Hardware is easy-to-use, powerful, or cheap. You can do two but not all three and Apple never goes for “power and cheap”.

APIs have also held them back and while Metal is addressing that it is only coming to maturity as Apple goes through a massive hardware shift. Perhaps once we see true desktop-class Apple Silicon and Metal 2 we’ll see a power/cost competitive system.

Console gaming means selling hardware as a loss leader. Apple is certainly capable of doing that as well as any console maker since they too have an App Store. Apple Silicon has a higher perf-per-watt than any current console, the M1 is just too low wattage. However, when‘s the last time Apple has lost money on ANY hardware it sells?

The move to Apple Silicon certainly means difficult (or impossible) upgrades and limits third-party GPUs, overclocking, etc. It does open the door to loss-leading or price competitive console gaming but this current Apple TV is moving in the opposite direction.

That has been something I have wanted for years. Glad to see if finally happen.
Why? The Menu button was, in effect, an Up button (up in hierarchical terms, not in grid layout terms, like you find in file managers). Up is a far more useful navigation function from Back. I've just watched S2E13 of something, what's more likely now - that I want to go up a level to the series as a whole (then maybe up another level to TV Shows) or what I want to go back to that episode, or the one before, etc?

I'm hoping the back button continues to function like an Up button and is just badly labelled now.

This makes sense when you think about it - being usable as a game controller, including being held in two hands, was why the layout of the old, terrible Siri Remote was symmetrical. Since they're dropping that symmetry for a purely one handed, pointing forward design, it's no longer possible for it to function as the game controller that way.

I would think it is, even if it isn't accessed at all. I have it since Apple One was cheaper for extra storage and Apple TV +. Arcade is just lumped in so I can not complain. I would never pay for Arcade standalone though.

I would think I am not in the minority either?
Who would know?

What bothers me is, that Apple doesn't mention Apple arcade that much, or does it? Or did I miss something? It is there one their website (at least in the footer under Services), yet still somehow hidden.

Ironic as ios has so many amazing games , my iPad Pro’s approach my ps5 in gaming ability which is remarkable really .

Hopefully they‘ll do a gaming version souped up , maybe in time for Xmas ?

Apple store down = more articles on Apple

I too was disappointed with the A12 Bionic chip in the Apple TV upgrade & initially half expected an M chip Apple TV to be launched later in the year, perhaps marketed as the Apple TV 4K Pro to support AAA games. However on reflection, I agree with a lot of the comments here who have discounted this. If Apple was to launch such a AAA gaming product, surely it would need to compete with the PS5s & Xboxes & come equipped with dedicated GPUs/HW & accessories etc to compete at the top level. I doubt this is on any short term product roadmap but wouldn't discount it in the future

However, could they release a standalone M chip product that may well have Apple TV functionality but its main function would be to support the Apple VR headset/Glasses?

And most importantly, missing the U1 chip.

The thing that you lose in the couch abyss the most is the remote, not keys or cats.

Yeah. I am almost certain someone will make a case for this remote with a slot for an AirTag. :))

who games with their remote? terrible gaming experience.

Driving games are actually pretty decent with the remote, my kids play the Asphalt series and I jump in sometimes and can control pretty well with it. I always hated steering driving games with a regular console controller, the Apple controller seems a bit more natural in that you kind of rotate it like a steering wheel.

I’ve been waiting for two years to buy an Apple TV. And now that the new one is finally here, I must say I am very underwhelmed.

Yes, the Gen 1 remote is tiny and thin and easy to lose between couch cushions, but I don't need my iPhone to find it. That's just tech overkill.

The Gen 2 remote (which brings back the awesome all-aluminum shell!) is bigger and less likely to get lost, so you can't apply the same thinking to it.

Are people walking out of the room with their TV remotes enough for them to get lost? Seems puzzling to me.
By my count this is at least a Gen 5 remote. Original plastic, all aluminum, touch remote, touch remote with Siri button. I feel like I’m forgetting one in there.

I really like the ATV too, but it caches a lot, and some of the apps seize, and so much I see requires a separate subscription, I'm wondering how long it will be a thing in this house.
Same here, I have many headaches like that for the premium price they command. I’ve owned numerous copies of every version since they went to the black box. TBR (time between reboots) to correct caching and other issues has been on the downward spiral.

Press coverage and marketing. Look, they even got you here to talk about the new store launch. 😂

I assume that there wasn't much use of the accelerometer/gyroscope outside gaming so they thought it wasn't worth the extra cost.

Still, a shame that they removed that as it locks you out of games that were designed to work with the base TV without an additional gamepad. And they are really pushing Apple Arcade.
No, it's not a shame.

We really, Really, REALLY hated the previous remote. It wasn't good for games and it wasn't good as a remote.

I'm glad to see clickwheel technology back in Apple products. That was the coolest part about iPods.

The Siri Touch Remote currently with the raised buttons so you can orient it more easily. The white ring around buttons was the latest version. (Technically identical fir features)

If you have kids/teens, the Apple remotes get lost in (really just pick a preposition for a cat and a cylinder) the couch really easily. I've had to dig thru the couch often... and I have a crappy couch so it ends up on the floor with the dust bunnies.
