Exactly. You can use the sleep wake or volume buttons to wake it up. Still fine for one handed use. For the fellow who couldn't reach the sleep button and needed the home button he can reach with a different finger. Either way, everyone is served just fine.
I've seen this mentioned a few times but you can use the volume buttons to wake the phone? Doesn't work on mine. Are you sure?

Honestly I had this problem on my iPhone 6 as well, although the 6s is definitely faster still. Coming from a 5s would be a big change though! Just train yourself to use a different part of your finger if you just want to see notifications. Already 2nd nature after just a couple of days.

Why don't you just wake up your phone by pressing literally any other button? You got the power button, the volume buttons, and the mute switch to choose from.

The phone is fine, it doesn't need to be "fixed", you just have to learn how to use it.

Learn how to use it? When I grab my phone the Home button is the easiest and closest button for me to press. it's not about learning how to use it.

I'm hoping for some implementation of force touch on the screen to wake the device for notification checking. I doubt it'll happen as the power button is sufficient but t'would be nice.

Tap the home button with the tip of your finger, i.e. change the finger's angle of attack from 0deg to 90deg, problem solved.

Just use a different finger?

This^^^. It's not hard to figure out

There is a disadvantage to this too. If you check your phone with the other finger a few times then it disables Touch ID. Too many incorrect finger scans and you need to put in your passcode. You can use your fingernail, but that is awkward. Pressing the sleep button seems to be the current solution.

Force touch or a double-tap to wake the screen would be a great compromise.

To which problem are you referring? I mentioned no problem or complaint in the post you quoted. I was simply suggesting an alternative method that might be useful.

Has anyone here experienced the touchID not functioning occasionally? It works really well for me (honestly my favorite upgrade from the 6), but sometimes it will just not register the finger at all and requires a lock/unlock to function properly again.

To me it was fine before. I never thought it was too slow at all.
This. Actually thought it was perfect. You could tap, do a quick glance @ notifications/battery/time, and unlock the device a second later.

And TouchID was accurate as well. Probably had about a 99% success rate on my Plus.

Because the volume buttons/mute switch don't work that way?
