As you have all said, it wont happen till before the hollidays, but I am excited, I have been waiting to replace my 30GB 5G iPod Video with the new full screen one for like 2 years :( As a matter of fact I already designed the entire new fullscreen iPod 2 semesters ago in my interaction design class ;) that's how long I've been waiting haha

I need a new ipod. My 80gb 5.5g is already full :(

But I too expect september more than tommorow, but if it does come out tommorow then my CC is going to be landed a nice surprise :D

Wow, you've filled up an 80Gb? I'm not sure how you can find the time to listen to every track on that. Surely that's the only reason you'd need more space, since iTunes can help you set up playlists etc. I've had my 60Gb for a couple of years and haven't even come close to filling it.

Well, playlists aside, the general idea of the larger capacity hard drive based iPods anyway is to be able to carry your entire music library with you so you can listen to whatever you want, regardless of whether you remembered to specifically sync it with your iPod beforehand.

It's a convenience factor really, and there is something to be said for not having to decide what stuff to take with you at any given time.

Nice design, but I have two questions for you.

1. Is that an infrared port on the top and if it is, what would be the use?
2. The dock connector on the bottom looks smaller than normal, did you change the size?

That's a good point.

But 80 gigs! :)

What new Zune? The limited edition pink? has the same size as all the others zunesno?

B

No, I read somewhere about the next Zune. Thought it came out, but you are right- the recent release was the Pink. The larger screen will come, but I cant find the article.

I just thought

we are in may right and we should see un DRMed music soon so I think we may see un DRMed music tommorow and maybe somthing else (High def movies on iTunes? doubt it)

But to tell you the truth I am sick of this damn phone its all apple is thinking about come on steve I want you to think about macs and iPods too.

There was a report in iLounge that MS would be unveiling a new Zune product today. Apparently MS did do this, but they only showed it to a select group, so any official unveiling will wait until later.

But assuming they're similar in design then Apple did most of the R&D at the same time so it wouldn't be a huge deal to release it now.

Apple cant even release Mac OS X in time due to the iPhone, what makes everyone think Apple can focus on a new iPod due tomorrow? As much as I would love a new iPod, this rumor is really unrealistic.

Because Apple has multiple divisions which focus on different products?

This idea that everything at Apple has stopped and that the entire company is working on the iPhone is kind of silly.

The OS X stuff is a bit different because the iPhone is an OS X-powered device, so it makes more sense that Apple needed to get the OS X team to work on it.

But none of this would prevent the iPod folks from working on the 6G iPod, the Mac folks from working on upcoming Macs, etc.

This is too close to the iPhone launch if it is launched tomarrow it will still compete with the iPhone possibly even more because then all of the people that are getting impatient will buy one instead.

I'm just saying from an international release point of view it could be possible that we might see an iPod revamp arround the same time the iPhone is released. US gets the iPhone what does everyone else get?

[SNIP]Not much chance I'll get a $400 new iPod past the spousal awareness net while holding a 3-month-old iPod in hand![/SNIP]

Dat is fuuu-uuuu-nee.

One thing we all have to consider is that the iPhone will see a rather long launch window in non-US markets, so maybe a touch screen iPod a little while after the iPhone launch for the non-iPhone markets, and the kids whose parents won't buy them an expensive phone but may be willing to update their kids' iPod for Christmas.

1. Well with my limited knowledge of hardware that was maybe an infrared to enable the wireless transfer, maybe not needed i guess.
2. My size was off a bit on the connector, but it would be the same as the current iPods.

This design was about a year and a half ago before Leopard light, iPhone, and MultiTouch, so obviously looking back i would make refinements. At the time I was seeking to unify the differentiation between front row, apple tv, etc. Looks like i was on the right track though if you look at some of the iPhone features. Guess we'll how how on I was when the iPhone comes out, but it will probably be like the iPhone only just an iPod. Can't wait :D

ipod

Well, it may not be tomorrow but MacOSrumors says the new ipod "will hit the markets just before iPhone does, and will take its place in the iDevice family just "below" the flagship iPhone."

They are pretty good on that stuff.

yeah right, and cannibalize the iPhone's sales? i don't see that happening until the holidays, maybe...

Is the iPod really an alternative to the iPhone? If someone wants a phone, iPod is obviously not an alternative. and if someone wants an hi-capacity mediaplayer, iPhone is not an alternative. And what about those people in Europe who wont be seeing the iPhone in 6 months? What about those people who already have a phone and who basically have no way to switch phones (or carriers)?

If Apple decides to hold back the iPod so it wouldn't "steal iPhones thunder", they would be screwing over a huge number of people. No, it would make sense to release a iPhone-derived iPod as soon as possible. And even IF it would cut some of the sales of the iPhone, it would still mean that people were buying an Apple-product, instead of competing product.

My guess? I would say that we will see a new iPod at the same time ITMS start selling DRM-free tracks. At that point Apple really needs to compete with their players, since the ITMS tie-in is reduced.

Is the iPod really an alternative to the iPhone?

To some people it maybe. I don't need a smart phone, but one would be really handy. I would really like a new iPod (although I will still be getting a new one when they come widescreen or not). Now, not me, but I could see someone saying "ah, I'll get a new iPod and just keep my RAZR" Whether or not it will happen it's just not a good idea to release two separate products from the same division (Consumer Electronics) in roughly the same period.

I have a 6GB iPod Mini. And I thought that I could never fill it up with music. And it is very hard for me to do it with music alone. But it could be done. But besides music, I have podcasts on my iPod. And my space-requirements went way up when I discovered podcasts. So I'm knocking around 5.8GB as we speak. Now, if I got a Video iPod, I would be adding videos to the device. And that would mean that my space-requirement would go WAY up. Add to that my plans of using the iPod as a storage for photos on the road (so I don't have to carry either a laptop or loads of flashcards with me), I could easily see the need for lots of storage. I'm currently looking at getting a 40GB iPod (40GB seems like a logical upgrade from current 30GB).

To some people it maybe.

Maybe. But would it matter? I mean, why should Apple try to force people buying iPhones instead of iPods? If they buy iPod instead of iPhone, Apple shouldn't be that sad, since they would still get their money.

Whether or not it will happen it's just not a good idea to release two separate products from the same division (Consumer Electronics) in roughly the same period.

That doesn't make any sense. Apple releases products from same division all the time. Hell, they often release several lines of computers simultaneously, and it doesn't seem to harm them one bit. And the reason for that is that while they are from the same division, they are targetted at different people. Same thing with iPhone and iPod. Not everyone needs the iPhone, they would be better served with an iPod. Some people need the iPhone, and iPod would not cut it. Why favour the iPhone at the expense of the iPod? Whether the consumer buys the iPod instead of the iPhone, Apple still gets their money.

take me for example: I live in Finland, so iPhone is still around six months away from me. And I have already filled my 6GB iPod Mini, and I would like to get some pictures and video on my iPod in the future. So 8GB does not cut it for me. And I already have company-issued cell-phone, so switching phones is not feasible for me.

So I want a portable hi-capacity mediaplayer. iPhone is not an alternative. Video iPod is getting old, and anything similar to what we have right now would look dated next to the iPhone. So why not simply rip out the cell-phone from the iPhone and replace the flash with HD? The R&D is already done.

If they release the next iPod today or months from now, I'm still going to get it either way since I still have a 4G and want a new one. The iPhone release has nothing to do with my decision to purchase the a new iPod, so I really don't see the point to wait to release the iPod because of the iPhone.

Though I doubt it will come out today, maybe the WWDC is more likely.
