the iphone and 6G ipod do overlap some, but some people want an iphone without the phone part, or basically an ipod with wifi and a touchscreen. Offering both at the same time would allow some consumers to forgo the astronomical price of the iphone, and allow them to get the rest of the new tech without having to change their wireless service plan or change phones. i think it would be smart to offer the 6G ipod now to keep up with the mp3 market which is growing by leaps and bounds.

Honestly, it likely stop me from buying the iPhone!

If it was like the iPhone, minus the phone.

That would be the point of not releasing them at the same time, to suede perspective buyers from one or the other.

It comes down to how many people are like me - I would like an iPhone, but I'm not likely to get the first version. Perhaps the next revision.

But I would love a touch screen iPod, and would get one tomorrow (well, when I get my next bonus) if they released one.

So, it wouldn't cannibalize my purchase.

Well i would doubt many people are like you, your very special.

As much as I wish this report was true, I highly doubt it. Like a couple others have said, it'll completely destroy potential iPhone sales.

Even if it is placed at the same (high) price points (the price justification being "iPhone - cell phone + HDD" = 6G iPod) it won't require the very likely insane monthly fee.

To be quite honest, I have a cell phone that works. It's small and cheap and does what I need it to. The only reason I would buy the iPhone is for the non-phone functions, and if these were implemented into an iPod, there would be no reason for me to get an iPhone. The impact of an iphone on my pocket-space real-elsate would be minimal and the impact on my phone bill would be tremendous. An iPod like this would be my technological "saving grace."

That being said, it won't happen... at least until the initial iPhone hype has died down. Like others have said, this will be a Christmas '07 must-have item.

I wouldn't be surprised, however at another minor upgrade... better HDDs, better battery life, better display, maybe even a new color or something... a 5.6G if you will, but Apple will not obliterate all hope of the iPhone becoming the revolutionary device they say it will be releasing a sweet alternative to it.

well i dno. im in two minds. apple have created a massive buzz around this iphone and left alot of people saying i cant afford it but i want it soooo bad! aswell they clearly said they wanted to sell 1 million in a year, they would sell so many more i think. another thing is that with the iphone they hae to split the profits with at&t, with an ipod the profit is theirs.

id love a new ipod tommorow, id love to win the lottery though too.

hmmmm

Well something is up. Apple's stock jumped 3 bucks and some change today without any significant news.

I think component shortages due to iPhone sales above initial plans will delay the already planned 6G video iPod and also might make its release price $50-100 higher to moderate demand.

The Apple Tablet Not Nano (ATNN) will not suffer from that since it will have entirely different parts including much more flash and a micro laptop form factor (dual display clamshell).

Rocketman

Damn!!

I'm going to Israel for a month on a tour from 8th of July. I really need an iPod for that trip, but don't want to buy one soon-to-be outdated

Tomorrow without an iPod would be due to the lack of time to develop one, unless they did during some of the development of the iPhone.

A widescreen iPod released tomorrow wouldn't necessarily cannibalize iPhone sales. Nobody is going to buy an iPhone JUST for the iPod. But people will buy a widescreen iPod JUST for the iPod. If people want a phone too, then they'll get the iPhone. Besides, I doubt you'd be able to buy an iPhone without getting some sort of contract. So how would it cannibalize sales? I see the iPod in the iPhone just an extra bonus.

Also, what difference does it make if a widescreen iPod is released now or in October? If you believe in the philosophy that a widescreen iPod would cannibalize iPhone sales then consider this - it will cannibalize the iPhone even more in the fall, especially when its popularity increases and the fact that it's before Christmas. But either way, I don't believe in this philosophy.

A widescreen iPod should definitely be soon. I don't see why it wouldn't be.

I don't say I'm completely correct, but some of the speculation going along is flawed.

A touchscreen iPod won't cannabalize the iPhone's sales:

1. Some already have a perfectly good cell phone
2. Some want more than 8 gigs of storage on their portable music player
3. Some don't want to spend $600 on a phone
4. Some don't want to switch to ATT
5. Some live in countries that won't get the iPhone for years

Seriously....my 60 gig iPod is full and I'm looking for a 100 gig portable music player. If Apple forgets about the iPod and only worries about the damn iPhone, I know I'll look elsewhere for my portable music player needs. I know losing my business to someone such as Creative wouldn't mean a thing to Apple, but I'm not the only one out there. The biggest mistake Apple could make is preempting their entire product line just to focus on the iPhone. They already did it with Leopard. The Mac Minis are in a desperate need of an update. The other Macs besides the Mac Pro could use one too. Lets just hope the iPod isn't next. Lets just hope someone at Apple pulls their head out of their arse and realizes that the iPhone isn't the holy grail and doesn't deserve 100% of the attention.

The new Ipod??????

This is a picture of a knock off from a Chinese company that makes Ipod clones but here is new product that they justs started selling a week ago

Here are the other Ipod clones they sell... you decide

A touch screen iPod would not hurt sales but hurt publicity for the iPhone. So while Apple puts everything else on hold the only people they are hurting are the customers that don't care about the iPhone.

I agree with everything you say, I am sick of this stupid phone. And I dont see how releasing a new iPod is going to hurt iPhone sales, does anyone in here think releasing new displays is going to hurt iMac sales?? I almost wish Apple would break into 2 divisions, Consumer Electronics: iPod, iPhone, :apple: tv, etc.. and Hardware & Software: Mac OS X, iApps Pro-Apps, iMac, Mac Pro etc.

What's the signficance of Apple wanting demo units back

Just wondering what the significance of Apple wanting demo units back? Does anyone have any experience with this in the past? What's the big deal if older demo units are out when a new product is released?

Well i would doubt many people are like you, your very special.

With an insult that cutting, you have to get you're spelling write.

This is all nonsense anyways. I heard that the 6G ipod will only be released the tuesday after the iphone drops, and it will cost a premium like the ipod photo did originally (around $2000), but apple will offer a $782 rebate if you get it with the macbook pro g5 which will ship the same day.

But the 6G ipod won't cannibalize iphone sales at all, because it will only be popular with ppl who already have phones, but don't have ipods, whereas the iphone is aimed at ppl who have neither, but still only have one trouser pocket free. DUH! Honestly, do you ppl even think before posting? I'm not gonna buy either because I have both a phone and an ipod, NTM a wide array of trousers which feature both left- and right-side pockets. Besides, I'm not switching to Cingular just to be able to get the iphone anymore than I'm gonna move to the States just to be able to switch to Cingular.

Am I the only one that thinks the girls on that fake nano pic are really attractive? If new iPods come out tomorrow I am going to make a few posts like that guy in the think secret comment section.;)
