The iPhone 5 black chipped pretty easily but that’s if it got nicked or dropped. Nothing will touch the black part much besides your fingers. Should be good.
And dust, bits of debris etc that might land right in there… be interesting to see how these new machines hold up over time

Please stop with the facts! It’s just too thick…people must cancel their orders…Hopefully mine will ship sooner! ?
The bulkiness has nothing to do with the actual height but with the round-edged design on the bottom which makes it look fat. Why they choose this design I don't know, it was not needed for the new ports: my 2015 MBP with HDMI and USB-C looks so much slimmer because it lacks the rounded design.

It’s funny to me how “upgrades” are Apple correcting it’s previous questionable decisions, ie Dongle Gate. Can we backtrack on the camera bump then? Makes sense as leadership changes I guess.

I think they could of stuck with the same thickness of the 2019 16” and put the M1 max into it, they made it thick because of the ports which most people won’t use
It is literally half a millimetre thicker than the 2019 MBP. If you could tell the difference when picking one up I’d be amazed.

These new real world pics/vids are worrying me a little.

The new laptops look THICK. Maybe I should have waited for the 2022 MacBook Airs? (upgrading from the 2020 13" i7)
It only looks so much thicker because the edges are straight down and the bottom doesn’t have the bulge that the older MBPs have. Apple purposely did this on previous MBPs to make them look thinner than they actually were.

I am sorry. That's just my personal opinion. But I really don't find it good looking. In fact I find Apple really lazy. Now I am not saying: oh change the design every two years like some cheap Windows laptop. But geez. My Powerbook G4 looked exactly the same (except for the keyboard). And that was 15+ years ago. It's also gotten quite thick and big. Irrelevant when used as a pseudo-desktop. But for people who actually take it out every day, I honestly find it too big and too thick compared the 15 and 16"ers of yesteryear.
To each their own, but I have to admit the new MBPs look A LOT better in video than they do in the marketing renders. I’m even starting to like the idea of the notch now, given the sheer amount of real estate you get.

Redesigned cooling system I suspect. In just 3 days I’m sure we will see the tear down and I imagine not a lot of empty space will be found.

And sacrifice battery and space in the process. I’m glad that Apple now is confident enough to not resort to the design of faux thin to please users.

ports, display and cooling.

One of the most important factors for me with a laptop is size and weight.

If I didn’t take it anywhere then I’d get an iMac.

This new MBP is way too big for my liking.

So just don't buy it then. Apple offers plenty of lighter-weight and smaller alternatives for you. But those of us who actually need the horsepower and the appropriate thermals to actually be able to use it, and the battery, welcome this departure from the previous misguided and counterproductive thinness obsession. This is supposed to be a machine for professionals who need lots of compute over sustained periods of time and long battery life, it's purpose is not to be as thin and light-weight as possible.

Like a lotta folk saying, kinda beefy. I thought the new M-class chips were very thermal efficient, which you think would mean less bulk needed for fans and cooling? For someone who actually carries around a laptop, as opposed to using as a desktop, this looks look a lot of weight to carry.

I think this is not 16" 2019, it looks like 15" - no escape button, and different arrow keys.
Really wish I had read this before watching the video. I didn't catch that detail myself and was sitting there thinking that I was going to be getting a materially larger machine/screen compared to my 2019 16".

Apple:
“I heard all your complaints. Therefore we designed the following improvements/upgrades over the previous 16” model:

1. Improved Audio/Video experience
2. Better Camera
3. More port options w/ TB4 and Magsafe!
4. Fast Charging
5. 120 Hz display w/ProMotion
6. The most powerful ARM SoC chips ever designed and used in a laptop computer that you’ll absolutely struggle to get the fans to kick on with. We’re talking almost desktop quality GPU performance. Stream 7 feeds of 8K video. Dedicated ProRes encode/decode engines, 400 GB/s memory bandwidth, 64 GB unified memory….and much, much more…

However, we need to increase the thickness by 0.02 inches!”

Apple hater:
“It’s just too thick and the notch is so ugly, I’m cancelling my order!”

Sure we can appreciate all that, but it doesn’t mean we can’t question Apple’s decision to go with the notch.

Might become more obvious when we see the teardowns - but it probably allows for the battery to extend right to the edge and/or provide more air mass for the sound system. Or maybe at some stage they were thinking about bringing back USB-A and Ethernet (would have been nice, but I guess you have to draw the line somewhere).

Also, I suspect that the fancy "terraced" battery design for tapered cases (from the 12" MacBook I think?) didn't work out - I vaguely remember back in 2016 there were stories about problems with the original battery design for the MacBook Pro meaning they ended up with somewhat under-sized batteries. ISTR that was about the time that Samsung had their exploding phone problem and everybody doubled down on battery safety. (Or it could be that the TSA mis-heard "terraced battery" and banned it from planes :) )

You know what John Ternus and his team did? They scoured 1 Infinite Loop for any first gen Intel MacBook Pros and PowerBook G4s Aluminum in the basement and basically said, lets bring this design forward a bit.

That display is thick enough to house all the components for Face ID - Apple is just holding it back to get you to upgrade. I am definitely waiting until 2025 before I upgrade my notebook again. But, might get the base 16 inch second generation for brother.

Say, good fellow, where might I procure some pants like this?

PEOPLE,

Especially you Apple/Mac enthusiasts.

YOU CAN ONLY PICK 2 (TWO) for your laptop.

Performance
Portability
Power efficiency

YOU CANNOT HAVE ALL THREE at the same time. Period.

Not true the slim M1 air is enough power this could of had the same power as the new chips in the 2019 design but they wanted to make it thick for ports makes no sense

Reminds me of the 2009 MacBook Pro.
