These new real world pics/vids are worrying me a little.

The new laptops look THICK. Maybe I should have waited for the 2022 MacBook Airs? (upgrading from the 2020 13" i7)

Of course they are!

Another reason I'm staying with my M1 MBA. Yeah, it would be fun to have that much horsepower on tap, mostly for conversational purposes, but I just don't need it for 99% of my work.

Just as an example...my M1 MBA runs X-Plane 11 just fine - and that's non-native/Rosetta. When X-Plane 12 comes out, I suspect there will be an M1 native version that will be even better.

Apple:
“I heard all your complaints. Therefore we designed the following improvements/upgrades over the previous 16” model:

1. Improved Audio/Video experience
2. Better Camera
3. More port options w/ TB4 and Magsafe!
4. Fast Charging
5. 120 Hz display w/ProMotion
6. The most powerful ARM SoC chips ever designed and used in a laptop computer that you’ll absolutely struggle to get the fans to kick on with. We’re talking almost desktop quality GPU performance. Stream 7 feeds of 8K video. Dedicated ProRes encode/decode engines, 400 GB/s memory bandwidth, 64 GB unified memory….and much, much more…

However, we need to increase the thickness by 0.02 inches!”

Apple hater:
“It’s just too thick and the notch is so ugly, I’m cancelling my order!”

Best comment I’ve ever seen on this site

The industry zigs, Apple zags

Retro is the new thin for this line. THe new Air should be interesting.

They are making their laptops thicker while making their desktops so thin, they can't even fit a standard power or ethernet cable anymore.

Confusing.

I am sorry. That's just my personal opinion. But I really don't find it good looking. In fact I find Apple really lazy. Now I am not saying: oh change the design every two years like some cheap Windows laptop. But geez. My Powerbook G4 looked exactly the same (except for the keyboard). And that was 15+ years ago. It's also gotten quite thick and big. Irrelevant when used as a pseudo-desktop. But for people who actually take it out every day, I honestly find it too big and too thick compared the 15 and 16"ers of yesteryear.
Don't find it good looking? Interestingly, I didn't buy one of these because of its looks. Crazy, I know! It almost seems like they should make a super thin laptop called the Macbook Air for people like yourself.

Why not put all that connectivity in a sleek peripheral, that plugs in via USB-c, so we can have all the upgraded power and pixels without the upgraded thickness. I’m sure Apple could come up with an elegant solution for such a add-on device. For peeps who use it as a desktop, it’s just part of cable array you have anyway, and for people on the go, nice and simple to carry.

The only port I would of wanted brought back was usb a and ethent, no pro like my self uses sd cards, I use compact flash
I only use CF Express type B cards, hard to please everyone. Personally, I have no use for SD card slot, either.

What confuse about it? One for performance and another for casual use. Doesn’t seem confusing to me.

How is that elegant again? :D

You forget. All the current haters despised carrying around the 2013 15”. Go back and look at all their old posts. It was just too chunky and thick to carry around. ?

Not to mention the new 16” vs 2019 16” is just 0.02” thicker. People just love to complain when they have zero idea what the machine looks like in person. If the added weight and minuscule additional thickness is too much for the beast within then I say pass and move on….stop complaining!
This is the internet. No product is perfect and people will ALWAYS find something to complain about because they have no life. I haven't been a fan of the last three iPhone launches. I don't come here crying with post after post. All I do is skip the upgrade. I'm not upgrading my iPhone until Touch ID comes since the tech increases each year is minimal. But, I don't cry and whine about it.

Other should follow suit. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Done.

Reminds me of the 2009 MacBook Pro.
The 15" MacBook Pro in the video is 0.61" thick. The M1 Pro/Max 16" MBP is 0.66" thick (according to EveryMac).

That's only 5 hundredths of an inch thicker. I think two things are making the M1 Pro/Max MBP appear thicker. First, it's the shape of the case. It doesn't taper. Secondly, the feet may be higher to allow for more airflow underneath which results in better cooling.

You’re comparing a pro level laptop that is designed for performance to babies first desktop AIO, which is also 24”, with room to disperse components.

It’s pretty simple, cooling is a function of thermal mass. You can’t have super thin and high performance without a lot of surface heat or fan noise. The chassis of a MacBook itself acts as a heatsink, in addition to the active cooling.

The more nodes shrink, the higher their thermal density gets, and the harder they are to effectively remove heat from. This is why Intel’s 14nm chips run cooler than AMD’s 7nm chips, even when using 2x the power. They are less thermally dense, so it is easy to wick away said heat.

These 16” pros aren’t designed to be babies first computer. They’re designed for people with actual work to do, who don’t think 5lb is a big deal.

I’m not sure if people are just getting weaker or what, but I lugged around 10+ lb laptops no problem, 5lb is a breeze.

Sure we can appreciate all that, but it doesn’t mean we can’t question Apple’s decision to go with the notch.
For all Notch haters out there. Pay close attention. The “Notch” has ALWAYS been there. Apple just raised the forehead up to reveal the always there notch.

By raising the forehead, they are able to use that EXTRA space for the menu bar. The useable screen real estate has now actually increased as a result of the menu bar being moved into the prior foreheads location.

Aesthetically, it looks different…yes! But practically, it allows for MORE usable workspace. Again, if you just can’t handle more useable space because the aesthetics are too much to overcome, pass on this machine.

With that thickened why not give us ethenet while most pros use it

yeah exactly the iMac they had to make so thin they needed the chin but for the MacBook they just went thick

No, Apple does not have any desktop computer that is .45" thick. No one does.

A new video posted to YouTube today offers viewers perhaps the best real-world look yet at Apple's latest 16-inch MacBook Pro.

macbook-pro-2021-handson.jpg

The eight-minute video, narrated in Vietnamese, shows the new MacBook Pro's display notch, thinner bezels, full-size keyboard, and additional ports in close-up, as well as the thicker design, all of which are compared side by side with a 15-inch Intel MacBook Pro. It also shows the new MacBook being weighed, coming in at the expected 2.1kg.

The new MacBook Pro models have been available to order since Monday and will begin arriving to customers and launch in stores on Tuesday, October 26. Pricing starts at $1,999 for the 14-inch model and at $2,499 for the 16-inch model.

(Thanks, Hugo!)

Its a technical astonishment but I can't buy it if it doesn't come in seafoam or aquamarine colors.

I am still on the fence whether i want the 14" or the 16". I thought the 14" would be perfect since i'll work with an external 32" monitor most of the time anyway. But given how incredible these new displays are, i might want more of it.

Hmmm.. it does look a bit too thick and outdated vs previous dimensions but performance should compensate that. Now the backlit keyboard light bleed looks seriously as cheap as it can be though and that notch should be eliminated from mankind.

No, they just look that way, because it's the same size every where,
Your 2020 13" was thin on the edges, but thick at the middle, it was just an illusion.

I think the new 14" is actually a little thinner than that model.

I'm happy with this, it means better thermal management,
but if you only care about it being thin, then yes you'll have to wait for the next Air.
