I don't fancy reading through 10 pages but can anyone give me a brief summary of what the hell has happened today? Been working all day and intended to upgrade online after work but the site is saying there are no iPhones left.

In a word, Chaos.

At 8:44am o2 sent a text message to people who had registered their interest in the new iPhone 3G handset.

The upgrade form was basically either broke or overloaded but the result was; all online iPhone stock went to new customers. As far as I know, no o2 customers managed to upgrade.

Retentions claim that I wasn't alone and because of the issue with the upgrade process, not a single o2 customer managed to upgrade.

Retentions also claim that I can upgrade in store on Friday. The store however says all info received thus far, states I cannot.

O2 are rubbish at online sales
Carphone Warehouse are better
Limited number of available iPhones have been sold out (O2) thus driving up the anticipation & media frenzy (and blood pressure of Apple enthusiests)
Carphone Warehouse still taking sales
O2 employees dont know whats going on

You could probably have guessed most of that yesterday though!

There are no iPhones left.

Just spoke to a very nice chap at O2 and he read some of the internal memos they had yesterday and today. What i was most interested in is the ETA for 16GB white ones is two to three weeks and advise is to keep checking the site..

Update!

I just received a 3rd email from o2:

Your order is still being processed and, if accepted, should be despatched to you within the next 5 days. Any iPhone 3G orders will be delivered on or after 11th July.

We'll email or send you an SMS to confirm when your order has been accepted and despatched so that you'll know when to expect your delivery.

You will need to sign for the delivery, but don't worry if you're not in, the courier will leave you details to rearrange delivery. If you selected a chargeable delivery option a refund will be applied automatically to your credit/debit card within the next 10 days.

The easiest way to track your order is by visiting www.o2.co.uk/trackyourorder

This is a totally pointless email that doesn't give me any more info than the one 3 hours ago, but at least it suggests things are moving forward behind the scenes.

the iPhone is sold out in germany as well but germany doesnt get mentioned in any updates on macrumors as usual ^^

On a positive note:

Maybe, like with some mail-order, they are sold out of the initial batch for delivery to your door on the 11th?

If you order now afterwards, you will get one shortly after? Or you can just wait in line on the 11th?

You'd still be getting them hours earlier than here in N.A.

Forget O2 think orange

You boys and girls think you are having a hard time with O2. Just got off the phone with Orange

Can I get my PUC please

Orange: Why ?

Coz I want to end my contract and move to O2

Orange: Why ?

Coz you did not win the deal for the iPhone

Orange: We have lots of nice handsets !! As good as the iPhone

No thanks, just the PUC

Orange: That will take 3 days

3 days ? Why ?

Orange: We have to send it by post

By Post. Thought you were a phone company

Orange: That is our T&C.

Right, so you are saying you don't like text messages.

Orange: No, I did not say that.

Oh, well, at least it will be here before friday.....he says in hope.

Ordered via 02 website, already have tracking number

I'll believe it when I have the package in my hands, but...

9:30am: try to order, but site is down.
2:00pm: try again... smooth painless procedure. 8GB phone for free on £45/mo plan.
2:00pm: order confirmation email from 02
2:10pm: order dispatched to warehouse email from O2
3:30pm: order complete email from 02, with tracking number (via recorded delivery, Royal Mail)

Why??

O2 sent a text on 10th June to current iPhone users to say that if we registered our interest they would reserve us a new iPhone 3g. Today at 0804 we get a text to say that we can now upgrade. However I like most people are unable to upgrade and by 1400 they are telling us that they are out of stock. Looks like most new customers were able to order today with out a problem.

Why have o2 lied to existing customers like me?

The website still says that we are unable to upgrade in store, some sites are reporting that we can go to a store on Friday. If we do whats the point as it looks as if most stores have pre sold there handsets to new customers.:(

I have just been on a i2 store and they said I can come in on Friday and upgrade. Anyone else been in to ask. Don't want to wait in line then they tell me u can't do it???

Looks like we'll have to wait for our upgrade iPhones, be honest it's not that much of a problem is it? We'll still have firmware 2.0 and the app store to play with.

Of course o2 are going to give priority to new contracts!

Don't be so sure that CPW have any allocation left - the way their site works they will still let you order but your order will be fulfilled from future allocation (i.e. AFTER 11th July) - there's no way of knowing if you're pre-ordering for launch day or if they've sold out of their initial allocation and are now taking pre-orders for the next batch. Basically I ordered mine from CPW at 11:53 and have been spending the rest of the day unsuccesfully trying to find out whether I'm getting one on Friday or not.

You jammy git! ;)

Only joking; congratualtions, but my experience went along of the lines of....

8:43: txt message from O2 syaing your iphone 3g is here, just goto website
8:44: went to website to order, just kept timing out.
9:00: tried again, same.
9:30: got to work and tried again; now says "down for maintenance"... ? WTF - the things only been up for less than an hour!
10:00: tried again, same.
10:30: tried again, same.
11:00: tried again, let's me in, type in my card details then gives me the fail page.
11:10: tried again, more fail pages.
12:00: tried again, this time actually get to the point where i click the "Send" button, but no confirmation screen... mmm... Have i got one or not?
12:30: still waiting for my email confirmation.. Not got yet.
13:30: went back online to try the order process again...can't get in...
14:00: tried again, now says "out of stock".
14:01: walked outside of work, shouted loudly and smacked my head against the nearest brick wall; which was kinda nice as it hurt less than the sting i felt in loosing the last 6 hours of my life to this poxy processs...
14:02: depression kicks in as the realisation dawns on me that after all this, i still don't have an iphone 3g... Even though i was there at the beginning and spent most of the morning trying.... :(

I've just asked my local O2 store and they said yes, as an existing iPhone owner I can upgrade instore. I asked him if he was sure and then again if he was sure he was sure and he replied, 'yes'

I just have to balance things out a tiny bit (and yes, I know I'm not trying to upgrade, which is where the problems are)...
Got email at 8.00 this morning. Went onto O2 site at 8.15, and ordered. Bombed out twice and nearly gave up, but third time it accepted my order, and I received two emails and a text from O2 immediately.
Have spent the day checking order status - still says in progress - driving me nuts, so I called customer support and got through in seconds. Lisa called up my order and confirmed that I had passed all the checks and that my 16gb phone would be delivered on friday by courier, no questions.

I am a happy man, except that I would have liked to have had a white one - no biggie, it's going straight in a case anyhow.
But I feel for all you guys who are upgrading - I bet BET that you will be able to do it in store, or online on 10th...

after many long and quite heated discussions with O2 on why my upgrade was listed as a 'new' order and what actually want happening... the following seems to be correct..

my order (8:20am) for a black 16 gig iphone is showing OUT OF STOCK, however ALL orders are showing out of stock until friday when the units dispatch..

The iPhone if you ordered and received a confirmation WILL ship to arrive on Friday. The phone side of the iPhone will be fully activated (and apparently I can take it out.. and start using it!) - quite how that works I've no idea given that wasnt the case with the originals...

Pluging it into iTunes MAY ask for a pin, on which you can contact O2 with your mobile number to get the PIN to fully finish the migration...

all still sounds a bit strange...

the managers I spoke to just now said.. yes.. we basically screwed up.. the SMS message to O2 customers should have gone to existing iPhone customers only, it actually went to all customers.. demand was too high and we sold all units allocated by midday. 16 gig units were sold out very fast within an hour or so.

so i'll wait and see if someone turns up on friday with a new 3G iPhone, and see if it does indeed act as a upgrade to my existing contract or is a new contract and I'll have to battle again...

right now... cases?? anyone see and incase cases for the 3G's ?? ;)

Similar story here - I'll revert to Plan A and pop into my local O2 store on Friday. I think I'll pop in tomorrow to see if 16GB iPhones are going to be in - I read on macworld.co.uk that O2 had no 16GB iPhones despite the website saying it was in stock when trying to order this morning.
