Update: Rang my local o2. They've told me I cannot upgrade in store, under no circumstance. I've given them the reference number and they're ringing retentions to figure out why all this misinformation is being given out.

I am totally and utterly shocked beyond belief.

BTW: my housemate works for News International. I'm gonna make sure the reporters are aware, of this complete load of bollox and not print some huge success story tomorrow.

I've just been on the phone speaking to someone from O2 customers services (upgrade section) about my 'failover' page order. She also said that I can upgrade from Iphone to Iphone 3G in store after Friday.

Complete chaos. I seriously doubt I'd be able to get a new Iphone within 2 weeks of launch.

CW still seems to be taking orders, https://www.carphonewarehouse.com, anyone used this one? It does have a RED X and Pre-Order icon next to the iPhone after you add to the basket but is this not normal seeing as they dont actually have any in stock at the moment anyway?

I have ordered from Carphone Warehouse. 16gb (new customer). Email confirmation has come through.

I have selected to pick it up from my local store. Much better than sitting in all day.

On the iphone page, it says 'out of stock' or 'preorder' because they have not had any in yet. Called CPW customer services for an update. Told that they will be processing all orders today, will call if there are any problems. Was told that the dedicated iphone team have been asked to work overtime!

CPW seem a lot more organised than 02. I read somewhere that they did not start taking orders till 11.00.

Looking at the mess that 02 have created, it seems CPW is a good option.

I'd like ofcom and Apple to investigate this.

I'm sure Steve Jobs isn't going to be happy, that thousands of die hard Apple fans have been **** on by o2.

I don't believe the upgrade form was ever meant to work. 99% of existing customers will just wait. But 1% of us who actually give a **** about being ill treated, should attempt to do something about it.

I've had my friend ring the sun and give the story to the reporters. I'm going to email Apple head office and Ofcom.

I truly believe this is a setup. There is no way, even if the site was busy, that not one o2 customer could manage to upgrade.

I hope they pay for this dirty trick.

Well I took the plunge and ordered a 16GB with CPW.

Noticed after that the eligibility footnote actual states availability is "8GB" only.

Gave CPW a call after recieving the 2 emails confirming the order. After 10 minutes a guy answered and I introduced myself as "Hello I'm one of the crazed Iphone people"

He laughed. Told me that currently its out of stock but that CPW have 4000 allocated to them. Last count they still had 2800 odd left. At which point I asked. "Is that the 16gb or the 8gb"...

His response "Oh...um... I don't know. We haven't been given that information".

He valiently informed me that "someone will call you should there be a problem fufilling your order for friday" To which I deadpanned "What at 9.30 Friday morning or in the afternoon"

I heard him laugh nervously, and assured him. "To be honest. I'm not going to scream, cry or track you down to throttle you. Its ok. I just want to know if I need to cancel my online order if I can pick one up instore I can?" I then made him send me an email confirming this fact (I know about the 14 days but wanted confirmation) and ended the call.

All those with guarenteed Iphones. Congratulations.

All those without good luck. (Think I'm probably in the same camp)

Start a petition then Charles Bronson, and then we will all sign it

think it is time to write a stern letter to o2 on behalf of all iphone customers. Exisitng customers do not want to be treated like second rated users, especially when o2 sent texts out earlier this month inviting us to reserve an iphone. I wonder if we can bring the call centre to a hault lol

Well couple of guys here at work got their upgrades sorted.

The site was very busy - Two points O2 may have not realised how popular this would be and misjudged just how many would be jumping on today and the site basically crashed and crawled to a halt. They should have had a decent idea with all the sign ups.

Then they never had enough stock but this is more than likely due to Apples' constraints of stock.

Seems the new iphone is pretty popular and they are selling like crazy.
I am hanging on for a month or so as couldn't really be bothered upgrading today and sounds like that was a good enough decision but my workmates here are happy to have got through and ordered their phones.

Upgrade in store

Just had a very long phone call with select customer services during which they also called the Winchester O2 store. Customer services stated you could upgrade in store as everything has been such a F**k up and they've run out of stock. The store said no. On further investigation she found the store have not been given all the info yet and the upgrades will be available in store from Friday. There will be an announcement on the O2 website to this effect on Thursday. Most promising phone call I've had with O2 so far. I guess we'll know Thursday when the update is published on the website.

Called O2 upgrade service and they told me that we could upgrade in Store on Friday !!!

Hope they are true or i'm going to scream on friday !!!!!!!!!!!!!

You never know if it is like last November, the launch was a Friday and on the Saturday most iPhone stores hadn't even sold one and the Apple stores in Manchester still had plenty all weekend!

Seek out the nice small stores on the O2 store locator and pop in on Friday. They will sell them instore as upgrades if they are not taking on that many new connections, I'll bet my 8gb 2.5G on it;)

Your order confirmation states that you ordered the 16gb though.

I still think CPW is the best chance you have of getting one. If reports are correct that each 02 store is only getting a few 16gb, bet the staff will take a couple!

I did wonder if this was going to happen, particularly once they said 'come back on the 10th'.

Well you'd think so. But I was unsure if CPW were just acting as 3rd party sales for O2 and the 4000 stock wasn't their allocation but the entire O2 stock.

So if you include the amount O2 sold this morning, the CPW allocation was gone before they started selling at 11am...

JUST MY TWISTED PESSIMISTIC THEORY.

get emailing people!

And what exactly are you going to complain about? That you weren't able to upgrade to your next favourite gadget on the day of release? I mean come on. A mild inconvenience is hardly a serious issue.

Ha ha that is pessimistic and almost certainly not the case!!

I don't fancy reading through 10 pages but can anyone give me a brief summary of what the hell has happened today? Been working all day and intended to upgrade online after work but the site is saying there are no iPhones left.

Texts started going out around 8AM I believe, but right from the off the site was pretty unusable...due to a lack of server capacity (and poor design, I suspect). The 'failsafe' server was a joke, clearly whoever had come up with the load-balancing plan messed up big time.

New customers seem to have had few problems, but those of us going iPhone to iPhone 3G have been royalled ****ed over, basically.

It does, however, look like we're going to be able to upgrade in-store after all on Friday. I'll be there (on that note, anyone going to the Headingley store? :D).
