Confusion...

To clear this up, it does appear that the main problem lies with upgrades only, before the shop went down I was able to have a non upgrade phone in my basket and available to order. But as I'm already a "valued" customer (ie. upgrade), I can't physically order one.

That doesn't sound like a benefit to me...

o2 are pants. When the online checkout does work, it won't find my address, helpfully telling me to ring o2 customer services - who tell me that they can't help me.

Booooo!

For those seeking clarity:

Existing iPhone customers upgrade early to the iPhone 3G before 11th October 2008.

Only available online.
This is the only way those of us with an iPhone already are gonna get one.

Wow, the lack of PAYG information is bringing out the ungratefulness in people.

They are a business, and finalizing pay as you go plans are likely not priority because contract plans will have a higher return, but I really don't understand some of these quotes from people regarding O2:

"I am truly outraged at 02 this morning, leaving it till now to tell me I can get the iPhone on Friday..."

"So 02 have officially confirmed on their website that iPhone 3G for pay and go will be coming 'later in the year'.. Raging. how could they do this to us"

"outrageous treatment and total contempt for customers."

Let's face it, pretty much all of us are taking this too seriously, but I do feel for the PAYG customers. Leaving it until less than a week before anticipated launch to inform people that there's no set release date is harsh.

I do find it sad that a big company are having such problems with the upgrade side of their site and have had to take it down after an hour and a half.
From reading on a couple of forums I have read that 2 people have successfully upgraded. I have had about 7 texts with codes and not been able to get any further.

I think Vodafone NZ took a lesson from all of the countries/carriers that have had backlashes against pricing ... by just not telling us until the last minute :). We find out 13 hours from now, btw, and I'm sure it will get posted here if not made newsworthy!

Surprising in the email was the "The iPhone 3G starts from $199 on a two year contract." Did they forget the exchange rate / make a typo? This seems far too good to be true; I was expecting $600+ for the 8GB ... and still planning on the 16 :).

Classic O2

Well, another fine mess. How difficult can it be? They've know about the iphone for x amount of months, they knew 135,000 people registered an interest 2 or so weeks ago, and STILL they c**k it up!!

Also i received an txt at 8.20 ish this morning saying they would get in touch when im eligible to upgrade, which is officially in October, even though i was told via a phone call they think i could upgrade earlier. AND no PAYG info, in fact they have changed their wording on the site to "sometime later this year", another vague bit of O2 speak!

I mean honestly, how far can O2 mess people around before we say "To much!"

Got half-way through and...bad request. Eurgh.

Just spoke to my local store (so take this with a large pinch of salt) but they're saying that current iPhone customers will not be able to collect phones from stores on launch day. The guy advised me to A) keep trying the website and B) get on the phone to customer services and be charming.

EDIT: Bad request, again. Damn you, O2.

B***D we going to have to wait weeks !!!

Get over it ;)

I'm in the US and I was able to get out of my contract (without ETF) with a different carrier, but they did so abruptly one week before the initial launch last year. We didn't know how much the rate plans were going to be until June 26th, the phone came out the 29th.

People who are "outraged" have gotten themselves way too wrapped up and involved, and just need to step back, and contemplate if they can even actually afford the phone. Many who are angry simply cannot.

Same here. At approx 8.40 i went through the process of adding a phone to my basket (just as a test) and it worked, but as soon as i clicked on the upgrade it fell over. Another classic example of O2 making the system for new customers work, but failing their "valued" customers.

Screw this! I've been in a meeting and now I may have missed the boat. What's to stop me cancelling my current O2 contract and going in fresh as a 'new customer' on Friday? Is there a way to keep my number in that scenario?

I wouldn't worry too much about the 2 week thing - that's just to cover their legal backs if Apple screws them over on stock availability...

Hey, I'm not a PAYG customer, neither am I 'outraged' by any step of the process. However, it really isn't a good way to treat potential customers - hype them up into thinking they'll have X product on date Y, then mere days before date Y tell them "Oh, yeah, we're not sure when you're getting that".

You haven't missed the boat, barely anyone has managed to make a successful upgrade order.

Keep your number in that scenario? Possibly. But you'd have to pay the rest of your contract off.

Did O2 give a date already to PAYG customers just to withdraw it?

So the current gripes are:

1. PAYG is an unknown date at this point
2. O2 People who currently have an iPhone cannot purchase the 3G (until october?)

The second one makes sense... The longest anyone could have had a phone there would've been 8 months (Nov 9th till now). Unsure how it usually works in the UK, but I wouldn't US carriers to offer an upgrade path after only 8 months of ownership.

3. Oh, and the site is getting hammered

I've just been on the phone to a nice o2 lady - not got me anywhere though, there's no possible way of ordering over the phone. She offered to give me a call next saturday to place an order!! in the meantime she confirmed that the website is completely overloaded and down

I'm passed my minimum contract so am free to do that with no penalty (actually a requirement for iPhone upgrade). But I'm glad I've still got a chance.

I guess I'm going to have to sit at my desk all day with my finger on the pulse...

We were told that BOTH types would be available in July. And owners of the 1st gen could upgrade.

Upgrades?

I know that new customers are able to order their iPhones (I'm getting irritating texts from friends) but has anybody managed to UPGRADE?

As everyone knows it was acting erratically up until they took it offline. But in the beginning I was getting one type of form, then what looked like a different process... then nothing anymore.

But, in preparation for when it comes back online (if it ever does),
1) What do you enter in "Insurance required" (is it a Yes/No question?)
2) What's with the Bolt On?? What's that??

No, AFAIK they didn't specify a date. However, they treated the PAYG situation as no different to the Pay Monthly one, so it was reasonable for potential customers to assume that there wasn't going to be a gap between release dates.

Current iPhone customers can upgrade, assuming they're willing to bump their contract back up to 18 months. Non-iPhone O2 customers cannot unless they're past their minimum term. I'm not really complaining about that one, though - we would have had to buy PAYG phones and stick contract SIMs in, which would have been more expensive in the long run for many (including myself).

I was assuming that the Insurance box was a Yes/No answer...at least that was the most intuitive thing I could come up with for a very odd setup. However, you should have had some other things come up before that (although, due to the excessive server load and probably just odd layout in markup, the actual - useless - form was being displayed first at times).

That page still works interestingly.

I think that option won't be online again. The URL had failover in it, and i assume was a failsafe if the "nice" web appy site failed. Which it did, as did the failsafe.

I would suggest they'll put up the pretty one again, or have something more reliable online. I just put "Maybe" and "Options?"!

Bolt ons are like £7.50 for unlimited texts, £7.50 for unlimited o2 to o2 calls etc with some international options too.

I've ordered my 16gb - so looking forward to 3g, I have a jailbroken phone at the moment and GPRS kills me.
Will be truly gutted if it's not delivered Friday though!

and the headline 'O2 website overloads under pressure on iphone launch' will be great PR for O2, don't you think? They don't give a monkey's, they won't lose a single sale from it. Every single one will come back later. It's a monopoly!
