What makes these things hard to get is that's there's only like 4 places in the whole country you get them from. There's newegg, amazon, mwave, buy.com, and i dont know which other stores sell 'em.

Not much competition so they can jack the price up.

You are right that there are indeed not much retailer selling those now.

I know Zipzoomfly 'will' carry them as well...and my local Fry's say they 'Should' have them 'soon'...
and if you are a 'dare devil'..you can try your luck on ebay.

I'm amazed at all the complaining about raising prices.

Think about it - you can't even keep the things in stock they're selling so fast, of COURSE you should raise the price. It's basic supply and demand for those of you raised in our NEA controlled socialist schools.

Raising prices provides more profit & more motivation to rapidly improve them as the market clearly wants this technology. In the long run we all win, which is what the market is supposed to do.

I'm going to get one of the 160's, man are they hard to catch in stock however.

However, when you are the only reseller in stock, who is charging far above the suggested price set by the manufacturer, it becomes price gouging.

I also wonder whether the $220 and $440 is the bulk cost sold to retailer or the MSRP.

I'd spend $900 on it, no problem. Not $1450. Liiiiittle too much. LOL.

...and put it inside a $900 MacBook or $1800 MacBook Pro or what? These prices are not of this world, they cannot make a laptop "twice as good" and therefore are grossly overpriced. If it doubles the price, it should also double its worth :p

There is no such thing as price gouging on non-essential goods.

WRONG! I am not sure you are kidding him/her or not..

SSDSA2MH080G2R5 is the retail package that include everything in C1 (SSD and 9.5mm spacer) PLUS a nice retail box and installation kit.
From Intel: "Retail box includes installation kit that contains: 3.5" desktop drive bay adapter to 2.5" SSD adapter bracket, screws, installation guide, and warranty documentation"

SSDSA2MH080G2C1 is just the SSD (w/ 9.5mm spacer) in a brown 'OEM' box.

There is another model:
SSDSA2MH080G201 is the OEM SSD in 7.0mm thickness only (w/o the 9.5 spacer)

Check out the link from intel:

The PDF here states what I said. I'm not wrong, you're not either. Were both right.

Okay...you have your point...

But for what it's worth...your information is for retailer's ordering quantity only...for a consumer...you won't get 5 units even if you order the 'R5' SKU. (I wish I was sent 5 units tho...you know... I wouldn't mind^^)

Oh Wow, newegg has the 80GB is in stock now but they bumped the price to 299.99. They are seriously taking advantage of these things being hard to get.

ridiculous. these drives are not good enough to warranty the price increase. give it time guys it'll go back down as resellers receive them.

now its showing 399.99 for some reason. Now that can't be right.

Jut got done chatting to a newegg rep and that is no typo, they really did just bump the price to a whopping 399.99.

Actually this is a beautiful exercise in the pricing of an elastic good.

$229 was obviously way too low, and at $399 they are still in stock, so that may be too high.

Also, as more retailers get them in stock, there will be a quicker movement towards equilibrium for pricing.

Fascinating.

I see (am seeing...actually) that also. Newegg has it in stock and is selling for $399.99 a freaking piece!!

I don't know what to say...I know the market is still trying to find the equilibrium, but $399.99 is just way over (in my opinion at least)...Intel drive is good...but does it really warrant a $60 premium for 40GB less than the Vertex..I personally don't think so...

I am glad that I happen to stumble upon mwave when it was still in stock earlier today for $250/pc. Well...just keeping my fingers crossed that it INDEED have it and will ship sooner rather than later.

True and let's hope Intel can get the stock out sooner rather than later.

The beauty and whole purpose of these new 34nm drive is that it can sold cheaper because of relatively lesser manufacturing cost and hence increase the popularity/market share of Intel drive. It will just hurt Intel if the retailer keeps on bumping the price when supply is short and demand can't be met.

I would expect the price keep on lurking around $250-290 ($399 is just way over and unrealistic) on average under current situation.

EDIT: Well...It may well be a strategy for Newegg to clear out the possibly huge remaining stock of Gen1 drive tho. You know...any informed consumer will opt for a Gen2 in a blink if the price difference is not crazy enough.

$499 for the 80GB now? lol..

Wow, I thought you were joking... They really did raise the price that high. Crazy. I now feel lucky for getting my 160GB G2 for $500 at CDWG. As a heads up, the 80GB seems available for $255 there...

if you browse under Intel SSD there are 2 different versions of the 80GB G2, one is $499 another is $599. This has to be some sort of joke.

499, woah that is just a joke. *L* What are they thinking. OMG, they even raised the price on the 160GB as well.

Well I guess they found a way to keep them in stock now..

I think the *less expensive* one is for the C1 version and the other R5.

Daaaamn... $899 for the 160 and $499 for the 80GB .... :eek::eek:

Unbelievable... I feel like I was hurt and insulted...Newegg think its customer stupid or what?...You let your customer to wait for re-stock...and once you got it....you jumped the price more than 2 fold...*NICE JOB*
