When do you expect the price of G1 to drop? It's still at $300+ on Newegg.

I wonder if the G1s will be substantially slashed in price to get rid of them from inventory.

You know there will be plenty of hapless buyers who aren't up to date and buy these before any price drop.

A pity :D

Anyone else know it we can get hold of this in Europe yet?
I live in Norway

Not that I know, every where I look there is a back order, expected delivery is within 2 weeks. (I live in the Netherlands)

Apparently this is the reason for the drives being pulled on Newegg. From Here http://www.pugetsystems.com/blog/2009/07/24/minor-hiccup-on-new-intel-ssds/

Puget Systems said:
It seems like everyone has been excited about the recent release of Intel’s second-generation solid state drives (SSDs) this week. I am the proud owner of one of the first-gen models, and the idea that more affordable models will help more people to adopt this technology is just cause for celebration.

It came as quite a shock to me, then, when we were told to hold delivery of the drives to end-users this morning - just before our first shipment came in to the Puget warehouse. There was a lot of confusion, but it was clear that something was wrong with these first units - enough so that Newegg and other online vendors had also pulled them entirely from their sites. We too stopped listing them, and began contacting our customers who were expecting us to ship them out this afternoon. We couldn’t say much, though, since the details were still sketchy, and nothing was posted publicly online.

After several hours of waiting on Intel’s tech folks I am now pleased to be able to relay to our customers the status of the Intel drives. There is a defect in the units which causes data corruption if - and only if - a password is set on the drive in the system BIOS… and then changed or disabled later. Initially we were told this might require a complete reworking of the drives, and that those we had gotten in were effectively unusable, but Intel was able to work out a firmware fix for the problem. That won’t be available immediately, but should be showing up in about two weeks.

In light of this set of circumstances, we are contacting all of our customers who already purchased to let them decide if they want the drives now, with full understanding of the situation, or if they want to wait till we get units with the updated firmware from Intel. Since few people seem to put BIOS passwords on their hard drives the overwhelming response so far has been to ship them out, but we want to make sure that we work with each of our customers to get them the results that are best suited to their needs.

One other interesting tidbit is that Intel is not going to be shipping more of these until they have the firmware fix, so there will likely be a shortage of the drives for the next couple weeks (especially depending on how other vendors handle their existing orders). We will continue to sell the stock that we have, though - and any others we can get through suppliers - so that we can meet customer demand and get these high-performance SSDs to the masses!

I'm not sure why, but I ended up cancelling my order at the very last minute. Then a couple hours later, they got pulled off NewEgg.

I don't see this issue as a showstopper. At least they are revealing where the bug is. I wouldn't worry about this issue.

Does this effect open firmware passwords?

No; the firmware password is not stored on the HDD/SSD.

It doesn't affect people who don't use a BIOS password to restrict access to their drives and definitely does not affect people with Macs since there is no BIOS.

Only 80 GB and 160 GB choices? My iTunes music library is more than 160 GB lol. I'll buy an SSD once they can demonstrate consistent performance (I'm not impressed by the random write speeds on today's SSD's) and once they get prices down on the high capacity 512 and 1024 GB models.

What's the point of an SSD if you can't use that speed to do real disk intensive tasks like edit HD video? You need a lot more than 160 GB for that. I'm not dropping my laptop so I don't care about the added durability of an SSD. I don't care how many seconds it takes to boot up my laptop so no benefit there either.

Give me a 1 TB SSD (one that actually performs well) on a 3 Gb ESATA port and then you've got my attention.

You are unimpressed with the random write speeds? Compared to what? Notice the hard drive, 2nd from the bottom.

UK Supplier

To people in the UK: Lambda-Tek are supplying a few of these for £276 ex vat!

I ordered a 160Gb one on Sunday evening, it shipped Monday morning and I got it at lunchtime!

Got my boot drive cloned over this evening, and it's just amazing how quick this laptop is now! Sick!
They only had 3 left when I ordered, and I'm not sure if they're sitting on them due to the firmware issue (mine shipped as the news was just trickling in). Be quick, geeks!

I'm hoping this bios issue is only a firmware issue and not a hardware fix given the halt they've put on distribution. I received 1 today and 2 more tomorrow from NewEgg (1x80 and 2x160 for a music server - headless Mini). Looking forward to getting them up and running!

I know it's possible through Windows, but not sure I'm going to do a bootcamp allocation on the Mini, so is the firmware update going to be possible via OSX or CD Rom? I don't really want to pull the drive out the Mini for the firmware update...
