Another example of the kind of feature Apple keeps ramming down our throats. It'll be useful for a few. But most people never asked for it and will likely never use it. Apple needs to spend more time and effort fixing bugs - of which there are many.

Apple ain't pushing this as the next big thing. It ain't crash detection.😓 Someone stumbled upon this feature and decided to let the rest of us in on this hidden gem. Now I won't have to carry a banana everywhere to get an close enough measurement.

Still depressing that unit conversion can lead to bad outcomes. I'm a physicist so used to both systems. And old so I remember Carter trying to get Americans to change.

Now I just base everything on quatloos.

I heard of a jetliner that was fueled in pounds but recorded in kilos. (Canada) So the plane had half the fuel it needed but managed to land safely with no engines running.

This app has been surprisingly useful and it is pretty accurate.
Yes, aside from the hundreds of millions of people who use feet and inches, nobody else uses feet and inches.
USA Myanmar Liberia 350 million people vs 8 billion people elsewhere. On a relative basis it pretty small, Almost nothing!. 4% is pretty small

Actually, NASA did use SI-Units for the moon landing. E.g. the lunar module's computer calculated in SI (but showed readings in imperial units for the benefit of familarity for the astronauts who were all trained pilots)
True there was a good mix of both. I believe most if not all the engineering was imperial. Guidance was mostly si and everything else imperial. All metric now though, I believe.

After long time spent on HD Forums I began using miles and learnt my height in feet-inches :D

It’s just a toy - like the measure app itself. For anything important — get out the tape measure.
No. Not with a LiDAR.

In all honesty, I've had an iPhone 14 Pro, 12 and Xr in the last years and they should remove this app from iPhones who don't have a LiDAR. Although just measuring using the camera is impressive, it's inaccurate and very long / infuriating to use.

Better for who? When I see 5’8” i know exactly how tall that is. If I see 185 cm I have to as Siri to translate it to feet and inches.

The US is the only major country that still uses arbitrary units. The world has gone metric. It’s the reverse for everyone else.

When I go look for a house in the US, I hear square feet, which means nothing to me. I only understand square meters.

iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models feature a LiDAR Scanner next to the rear camera that can be used to measure a person's height instantly in Apple's preinstalled Measure app.

iPhone-Measure-Height.jpeg

To measure a person's height, simply open the Measure app, point your iPhone at the person you want to measure, and make sure they are visible on the screen from head to toe. After a brief moment, a line should appear at the top of the person's head with their height measurement. You can choose to have the measurement displayed in feet-and-inches or in centimeters in the Settings app under Measure → Measure Units.

The app measures a person's height from the floor to the top of their head, hair, or hat. You can even measure the seated height of a person in a chair.

The circular shutter button in the bottom-right corner allows you to take a photo of the person with their height measurement and share it with them.

The feature is not available on iPhones without a LiDAR Scanner.

Old news. It came with Lidar sensor more than two years ago:
