There's a reason he gave the developers a years' warning. Despite what you read on this forum, it's not going to be a trivial job for most software houses to move their products over to x86. They'll easily need that year. I'm sure Adobe and Microsoft will be done well ahead of that time; but they've got lots of people to throw at the problem.

I agree with the first statement, but I don't think it's that difficult to recompile the software. It's certainly not going to take anywhere close to a year IMO.

given that this is the big 'welcome to podcasting' release, it seem likely that a new revision of ithe ipod is also due in order to enable everyone to take part.

i'm betting that '4.9' moniker will be skipped in favour of "iTunes 5.0", simultaneously with 5G iPod's with built-in audio recording facilities similar to but hopefully better than the iRiver (which is currently the podcasters hardware of choice, specifically for that reason)

the current iPods can only record with third party addon and even then only at very low quality.

just my 2 cents

if this is it, then they have quaranteed money from me. i have refused to buy a hard disk ipod because they had no recording capabiities. i mean near cd quality...the italk is pitiful.

i have voice lessons to record...so a muffled sound ...well...it defeats the purpose.

my complaining on this board about the ipod may come to a close :)

I just got the Moto Razr phone three weeks ago thru Cingular, works awesome. I can already transfer complete songs using Bluetooth file exchange, the same can also be done with video that is converted into .3GP format. Photos can also be easily transferred via file exchange.

Having had many different cell phones over 10+ years now, I was really hesitant to return back to Motorola. Their phones over last 5 years were really uninspiring and lacked features and had the worst user interfaces.

Motorola really is trying to get back into first place again. The Razr is a great phone. I picked it up for the compact size, syncing and looks, I really didn't think I would use the video at all or photo that much. But, people love to see this phone and being able to show them video has been awesome. Photo capability has been much more useful than I thought it would be. Moto hit a homerun with this phone, so I have high expectations for the iTunes phone. (plus, maybe, a software upgrade to the Razr to allow syncing with iTunes)

Moto could really benefit from Apple's superior UI knowledge, and this phone will have to have some awesome features to dissuade people from choosing a Razr (as it can already have music x-ferred to it).

I beleive that this will be an introductory model using the SIM chips for storage, as the Razr already does, to get this party started, future models get hard disk with larger storage capacity. Apple wants to stop other phones from eating at iPod market shares.

Speaking ot that,
iPods are in need of an update, and this would be the perfect time, with the expected slowdown in Mac sales during the intel switch. (gotta keep the shareholders happy)

1. I am thinking the low end iPod minis get a price drop- To put a non-flash iPod within reach of people who couldn't justify buying one.

2. Color screen comes to iPod Mini(high end) and across the board on full size iPods- iPod photo moniker is dropped( it always sounded lame anyway)

3. All color screen iPods have ability to print direclty to printers via bluetooth- This also simplifies syncing of contacts and calendars via wireless, Might also work if iTunes notices you have updated a very limited number of songs to your playlist, 5 or less.

4. Bluetooth headphones- wireless, wireless, wireless.

5. BATERRY LIFE- Wow us with this one, 24+ hours please! (hope the rumours are true about 40+.

6. Video capability on high-end iPod

I think I'm about to drop this web site. I'm tired of reading this stuff days after it's been on the other sites.

Well, Jobs never said iTunes with podcasting was iTunes 4.9... could this be iTunes 5.0 and the biggest letdown of the century?
That would suck.

llama :(

Also remember that Apple said that they'll have Intel Macs on the market by this time next year (he said this at the beginning of June at WWDC), so by June 2006, they should be on the market. However, this doesn't mean that they won't be out well before June, so I guess SJ could announce that the Intel Macs will be out by Nov/Dec, and that they're reducing all prices of current Macs by 25% to get rid of old stock until the new Intel Macs come out in Nov.

And Steve said that they had some great PowerPC Products in the ppipeline which I dont know if that means updates or new products.

I'm really hopeing for an Apple Tablet. I was actually thinking that Apple should make it really affordable like 799 or 899, and that would give them a huge lead on the intrustry becuase the industry starting price is about $1200 to $1600 so anybody how is looking for a tablet but doesn;t care if it has Windowes XP or Mac OS X, or prefers mac OS X will buy this product.

quick question: how cares about podcasting? the only ones that are worth it are stations like CNN and ESPN, which are readily availible with a few clicks. i honestly do not care about what my next door neighbor Bob is saying. Do you?

Yeah, but there needs to be a discount to counteract the RDF. "Great" in a Stevenote translates roughly to "meh" from a normal person.

I really hope they open it to availability on the forth. My cell phone contract with t-mobile is up on the 8th of july. An cheap itunes phone would sway me away from t-mobile. I barely carry around my iPod anymore, one more device is too many to me.

500 millionth iTune announcement is what's causing the date variability.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Jobs said that all of their software (iLife, iWork, etc.) are universal binaries already so there would be plenty of native software.

And given how simple the conversion is and how seamlessly Rosetta appears to run PPC binaries, I don't think most consumers are going to care.

Until internet radio is portable...

Maybe not but I listen to British and European internet radio and can't take it with me on my ipod. If they make their 5 hr Ibiza party mix available as a download I'm sooo there!

No Apple iPhone please. Somehow in the back of my mind, a phone designed by Apple would be overpriced, under-featured, and proprietary.

YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! I have Cingular.....they are the best anyways...

it will be compatible with t-mobile users also because you can swap sim cards...

Sorry if this is a little over the top... But anyway:

it is NOT an iPhone!!!!! It's a phone made by Motorola which allows you to sync your iTunes music onto it. It is NOT an iPhone. It is a Motorola Phone. Motorola, not Apple, Motorola. The only thing that has to do with Apple is the iTunes software on the phone.

ITS A MOTOROLA!

:D Sorry!

And how is that different than the majority of phones sold today? If you try to buy a phone standalone without the calling plan subsidy, prepare to be shocked. They're pricey (that V600 sold for about $600 on eBay at one point), most disable features even though a firmware update adds it in (Verizon with Bluetooth), and well they're all proprietary.

Who?

my contract with cingular is up august 1st, so i would love to be able to re-up and grab this phone... hopefully we'll get to see it this week. its obviously going to be GSM, so the phone will be able to be unlocked for the majority of US carriers, which is good news for the masses.

Who, T-Mobile? Sprint and Verizon are CDMA and Nextel is IDEN.

Well you have to think, who cares about blogging? I mean you could always go to CNN/ESPN/etc. for news, editorials, etc. But a lot of bloggers are out there and they provide some useful content (every now and then). I visit maybe a handful of blogging sites, but you can't deny the popularity of them. Plus, Apple is extending its reach, and I'm glad that there's some sort of system for audio broadcasts. Shoutcast and the like were ahead of their time in some ways.

Furthermore, rumors have it that Apple is signing up notable content producers (big radio stations, artists, etc). It isn't like it's taking away anything from you.

Bobs podcast could be interesting, the thing is you wouldnt know until you gave it a try.

Most people think that podcast are just audio blogs or NPR shows, the truth is there is tons of really interesting shows out there. The new Spike Lee podcast is amazing, getting to listen to record the show right from his office gives the listener amazing insight you would never get anywhere else. The Dawn and Drew show is really funny and original and of course the podfathers show Adam Currys Dailey Source Code.

The thing is that Podcasting is less than a year old and already there are promising new ways of using it, I for one am really looking forward to all the amateur podcast that will spring up.

You're not working at Microsoft, Adobe, etc. They have TONS of native code and assembly to change. Remember these companies took forever to get OS X versions out (and most of them Carbon apps at that). Apple doesn't care about XYZ developer right now because their code is probably portable and fairly small, and they have plenty of time. Steve Jobs realizes this too if it's going to take 2 years to make a complete transition.

Rosetta is not going to be a magic emulator that is able to make performance equal to a PowerPC even if the Intel Mac is 2x more powerful (which I doubt).

To launch the iPhone, Steve Jobs took its stick of pilgrim in order to convince of the operators of mobile telephony.

'stick of pilgrim' wtf??? :)

anyway, the dealbreaker for me is seeing whether Apple got to do the UI or not. I'm a sony ericsson user, and although I'm not totally opposed to a moto phone, the E398 came out maybe 9 or 10 months ago (?) and is basically outdated for anything but an entry-level handset. A nice new Appley interface and a sub $300 price would be nice. Compatibility with bluephone elite is critical as well, but reelintelligence most likely will get on that project fast...

other questions: quad band? or different radio for the european/asian release?

isync? apple logos? who knows

just throwing it out there...

apple designed printer (photo printer) with ipod photo dock connector?
iApps friendly, and extends iApp print layout possibilities.
Instant color management solutions for the average jane/joe.
=)

ok, off to play with the homos in SF (pride weekend).

*side note: Most people check their email before leaving the house (if at all), yet I (and I am sure some of you), browse Macrumers instead. Does this mean Apple's assimilation (via products and Macrumors) of me is almost complete?
