Is Bloomberg is saying a new Apple TV is coming? Or just new Apple TV OS (which we all new about already)? I’m thinking just the latter.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...ad-pro-16-inch-macbook-pro-airpods-3-features

Beyond these unannounced products, Apple is gearing up to launch a refreshed Mac Pro and its accompanying monitor, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, and Apple Watch software updates, as well as its Apple TV+ video and Apple Arcade gaming subscription services.

I’m hoping (but not optimistic) for a new AppleTV with processing power of the current/new chips we’ll see in iPhones/iPads.

I want to get a new 4K AppleTV, I do not need one now, so I can wait. Are there any rumors of an update coming anytime soon? What features is the current one missing that might make it into the next update?

Thanks.

Do we need another one? Apart from physical ports which seems o be right anyway, just take the same practice as "Windows 10" where Microsoft doesn't offer physical product anymore, its just "updates"

Not much more you can enhance from a hardware standpoint

Apple's big focus now is income from services and to keep ATV relevant.

A built-in TV app on Samsung and LGs are a big step in that direction. However, they could go further through hardware integration so that the TV app experience on a Samsung or LG TV is as good as the box.

I would answer „yes“. And the A10X chip in the 4K box isn‘t cutting edge anymore - if an Apple TV is central to Apple Arcade on your TV, I‘d love to see an A12X or A13X in it.

Why would they? Smart TVs rarely get decent software updates and after a few years, the companies lose interest. Samsung is the McDonalds of the electronics industry - churning out 'stuff' in order to sell. Nothing else period. They use 1% renewables and simply do not come across as a caring company. They want to sell to the punters that for some reason think that Samsung is good. It's not.
It goes against Tim Cook's money ethos to not sell the Apple TV etc.

Maybe for anyone who think that a smart TV platform is great, try living without your Apple TV for six months and only use a smart TV with its clunky UI. I'm convinced that you'll come running back to the Apple product.

To me, it shows how greedy humans have become in the western world and are taking everything for granted and simply expecting everything. A smart TV is not an Apple TV and really shows people's ignorance. The smart TV has a basic smartphone/wearables chip, low cost CPU, GPU etc. They are utter garbage. The Apple TV is built, designed from the ground up by the world's strongest hardware and software company. A smart TV platform is not. It's cheaply built with tiny margins. It's a throw away product with a short life. It's identical to thinking that a £100 smartphone will perform as well as an iPhone XS.

Yes. HDMI 2.1 with 120hz/fps to take advantage of Apple Arcade along with the UI. Certainly by next September 2020.

Actually there is quite a bit of room for improvement. Support of Lossless audio. Have enough horsepower for media server clients such as Plex and Infuse so they can run and do transcodes, subtitles without pauses or crashes. I had to give up streaming a Blu-Ray with a bitrate between 19.2 and 48 Mbps on both my fast iMac and QNAP NAS to my 4K Apple TV as I kept getting pauses and Infuse even crashed. Tried both with Plex server and SMB (with Infuse). But streaming the same files to another DNLA client hardware device worked just fine, even when using the QNAP with the slower processor and the same Network cabling.

can the appletv be used as a Plex server without a USB port? I don't think so. Im currently using my shield as the Plex server and using the infuse app to pull from that. Works good for me.

For me, the most obvious hardware improvement would be a remote control places greater emphasis on function, and less on looks.

You swipe, you select your app, you watch TV. Seems functional to me.
some of us want these to be our whole media setup for external drives and more than just an app machine. But it is nice for not wanting to do much with.

Any chance a new Apple 4kTV will be revealed this month? I want to buy one today but will hold off if there's better tech around the corner.

It’s trash. The supposedly 4K ATV can only playback TV shows in 4K. Anything else is rendered in 1080p like Zwift, which is getting big.

They need a real 4K ATV with more than 3 BTLE connections not this weak half effort.

Agree, it’s laggy and unresponsive quite often. Or overt sensitive other times. Varies wildly between apps.

Nothing like what you’d expect from Apple.

I do not believe (even with USB) the AppleTV can act as a plex server, only a client. (maybe a jail broken aTV could?)

We also like the Infuse app to connect to our plex server & network share.

I use infuse to connect to the Nvidia shields storage I have set. Just didn't know if there was a way to connect to storage on a router and somehow mount it to the appletv and use that as a server.

Looks like the 4K might be getting a bump to A12:

My question is how Apple will actually change it. Is it just a minor update with an updated SoC and a bit of extra RAM? Or will they even just keep the RAM the same, and use the probably somewhat cheaper A12 while keeping nearly everything else the same (aside from maybe getting rid of the fan)? Or will be a major overhaul?

BTW, in Geekbench Metal, A10X is actually much faster than A12. However, in some games, A12 is significantly faster than A10X.

I see plenty of people using their ATV’s with their HDD’s along with Infuse and have no complaints.

Or you could just buy a Nvidia Shield.

Very interesting indeed. Perfectly happy with our current ATV 4K but I’d always be up for getting the improved model.

Can the A12 run a game in 4K?
