What about 1440p, could it handle that?
The A12x is around performance of an xbox one s which struggles to run modern games at 60fps 1080p.

Now the A12X chip would be focused on mobile games which are less demanding so I would say 1440p would be possible on really basic games.

However the rumored new apple tv is getting an A12 and not an A12x. The A10X in the current tv has more graphical power in most gaming situations compared to the A12. If the rumors are true then in terms of graphics power, the new tv will be weaker for gaming than the old one but faster at pretty much everything else.

That said most games do not even come close to taking full advantage of the gpu performance of the A10X and the A12x so I am sure the A12 will be a fine upgrade and since it is lower power, they could remove the fan and reduce the size of the box again.

TLDR in pretty in most situations you won't be gaming above 1080. 1440 will be for some less demanding titles, but 4K is just a pipe dream with the current chips

Shame, I was really hoping for a better looking Zwift experience on Apple TV.

Basically wouldn't be any point buying an A12 ATV over the older A10 one then for someone like me that just wants it to run a game like Zwift?

Strictly for gaming? No as the performance would be worse overall. Though I doubt you would notice much since most games do not max out the A10X. However we do not know what new features the new TV will have. There is a lot of potential apple could offer with the new tv. However if its just a simple A12 refresh then you would be better off sticking with your current one.

I see the inclusion of A12 as a possible cost saving measure and a way to decrease power utilization. Also a new Apple TV could include HDMI 2.1.

I wonder if they will choose to put a fan in the A12 since the lower power would let it work more under sustained loads longer. Or will they cut the fan out and bring the size back down. Either way I am looking for a new model anyways so for me it is not a big deal.

Though I really want a low powered affordable 1080p streaming dongle that gets all its power to run via the HDMI. I only really want something that can mirror my ipad with a stable connection and stream netflix and youtube.

That would be my dream TV

Apple doesn't do half hearted with Apple TV 4K. Isn't it just possible that they will put the A12X in it? Seems bizarre that they would go with the A12 when they'd gone with the A10X before.

I remember the rumours 2 years ago and guess what, everyone was delighted when they went with the A10X rather than a A10.

It does make sense though with the launch of Arcade and of course HDMI 2.1 which would indeed end the frame rate / SDR to HDR black screen which Apple really hated from the start.

Let's wait and see.
Apple TV just gets better every year! It's very refreshing!

I would expect A12, not A12X, but it should be noted a new iteration of A12X may be in the works.

A12 or A 12x doesn’t matter to me. If there’s an update I’ll be replacing my 7+ year old gen3 ATV

WOW That's quality. It is incredible how well the ATV3 at 7 years old still performs very very well! Respect to the engineers at Apple for this one.

You'll certainly appreciate the app store, speedy UI with 60fps, auto frame rate switching etc with the new Apple TV though!

my guess would be the 4K gets a spec bump with the A12X, HDMI 2.1. Price stays the same.

ATV HD gets the A10X. Price stays the same.

hope to see remote changes ;)

I agree with the remote - the trackpad has a mind of its own and does not work fluidly like the trackpad on a Mac for instance which is pure perfection :)

Not really much point to put A10X in Apple TV HD. In fact, I wouldn't be completely surprised if they discontinued it. If they don't discontinue and in fact update it, they'd probably put A12 in it, not A10X.

Keep the price same, put A12X in and do whatever you want for the rest. Then I’m in.

how many of you guys would be excited to see some usb c storage on this thing. It can be so much more than it is right now. but i guess you can attach drives over the air so it doesnt matter.

I have a substantial library and my Apple TV streams from Mac mini, which ironically is underneath it.

With iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 getting external storage support, tvOS 13.x getting isn't out of the question, except that Apple TV 4K removed Apple TV HD's USB-C port.

That's a shame as doesn't make sense when Apple fitted the X previously from the iPad Pro. It would make sense to fit the newer iPad Pro's chip especially since they are launching Arcade. Only basis is greed I guess. But then 12 is old (and cheap) now that 13 is release? Let's see on Tuesday?

As a non gamer do people actually want Arcade. Surely they love X Box, PS4 etc or PC gaming. Who is Arcade aimed at??? Why would they want to give up those platforms?

My ABSOLUTE want for the Apple TV is a really decent WOW FACTOR audio. Something that makes you say 'WOW That sounds alive, crystal clear, vibrant. I've never got that from iTunes.
DOLBY TRUE HD PLEASE! But every year I hope for it and it never happens.
Apple TV 4K is perfect for video but the sound is no different to lets say 20 years ago. It's just there. But it doesn't shine.
It' a shame that Apple never had much interest in going the extra mile with audio - AirPods - great design but not very nice sounding, basic iTunes audio, BEATS etc.
Normally this doesn't cause me problems on my independent film as they are simple dialogue based BUT I can truly understand where film buffs are coming from with their Hollywood films and 4K BluRay.
Let me explain. On Thursday I bought Spider-Man - Into the Spider Verse. I was so excited to se this with my friends that I'd talked about it for weeks. I'd read that the audio mixing had won so many awards, AVS forums had given it the industry standard award etc.
It was in DD+ Atmos on iTunes but OH GOD, the first 2 seconds made my face drop and my heart sink. It sounds dull. I wanted to turn the treble to max but couldn't as it was already on that. I love a real clean, bright not flat sound.
The music in the film was a great choice but everything sounded dull and I kept having to turn the TV volume up and down throughout - up for music & dialogue and down for the over exaggerated sound effects.
The whole experience was a muddled mess. It made really disappointed in what i'd heard. It was a backwards way to watch a film not a modern way. The audio ruined the film for me.
BUT this film had won every award for its mixing, attention to detail, audio quality.

The whole time I kept thinking, damn I wish I had this on 4K BluRay. (a shame when I buy films from iTunes).

In comparison, even the YouTube clips of the film uploaded by SONY have a louder and cleaner sound that the iTunes copy.
WHY do after 10+ years iTunes films have such a low volume???????? If watching on my Mac or iPhone, I have to have the volume on max just to get a decent volume - not loud volume?
Does audio not interest Apple?

IF streaming is to kill off disc THEN it AT LEAST has to offer an audio experience that is on par with whatever format that it replaces.
It's really sad when the picture looks so good and yet on a demanding film, the audio is such a let down that it makes you feel disappointed.

Now, for me to notice this, a guy that only watches a film once a week is bad. I understand now why the real film fans are so critical and against iTunes and streaming etc. Apple really need to address this as it is unsatisfactory in 2019. With variable bit rate for video and audio and high speed internet pretty common across Europe & Asia, a lossless audio option should be offered to those whose broadband can stream it.

With Apple's price point of the Apple TV, they could offer this. It's bought by discerning customers who demand great quality. Whether Apple is offering that from iTunes is up to you - IMO for video, yes but for audio, no and it never has.

Since Spiderman Into the Universe is a Movies Anywhere film, did you try it on another streaming service like Vudu? I always find Vudu has better sounding audio than iTunes. Also, the movie is available to watch on Netflix (not sure of the audio choice).

Sadly we don't have Vudo in the UK buddy. Very few streaming place apart from Amazon or iTunes to buy/rent film here hence why satellite TV is still everywhere in the UK along with Netflix. The majority of the UK have SKY - I think i'm the only person in the UK to have Apple TV :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Apple is a weird company - they try to be the best of the best with some of their designs and products and yet completely miss the boat on others such as audio for iTunes and Apple Music etc. I was going to buy the whole collection of spider-man films but i'm off the idea now and i'll reevaluate my long term plan with this...

The Apple TV is one of the best for audio formats with streaming services. That said it’s still compressed compared to a disc. There’s no comparison from something over the air to a physical disc. Now if you had the full copy of Spider-Man(literally 50+gig file) streaming it would be very close audio wise also. You can’t expect audio to be great at a small download file. You need more data. Not the Apple TV’s fault. There isn’t a better option on the market. The shield does do atmos on your own media though so it has the win in that part. I have both.

Absolutely! Appreciate your information buddy. I wonder what the iTunes 4K DV Atmos file size is of the Spider-Man film? 25gb for the 2 hour film?
BRILLIANT film though. The artistic direction from the illustrations to the comic book feel to the 1 abs 2 on each frame is truly AMAZING! Everything about the film is so well though out. They apparently had 177 illustrators working on it!!!

I do hope that one day we will see Dolby True HD being offered to iTunes film otherwise when discs die, there will be nothing in the future to offer that incredible sound and that is very very very sad.

Sadly for me, the iTunes audio completely ruined the film and ruined all of the hard work that the team must have put into making such a beautiful, visual film.

Very quiet on the rumor front. At minimum, I'd like to see:

- more efficient chip so they can lose the fan (moving parts = bad)
- Dolby passthrough?

I'm not seeing any evidence of widespread success in gaming on tvOS. If Apple's unwilling to take on the console game industry (not to be confused with casual/mobile gaming), then I can't imagine what else they can do anyway. Perhaps lower the price??
