...and we got...absolutely nothing. What a disappointment.

I agree! There wasn't one wow factor moment for me. The cameras on the new iPhone's look really ugly.
Oh well, there's always next year guys!
PS Where was the one last thing? :'(

Maybe we'll see a new Apple TV next year with HDMI 2.1 and 120fps for gaming.
It is what it is guys - a streaming device. Maybe we were all expecting too much from it.

Still loving my ATV gen3. Seven years and still running like a champ with its kick ass single core A5 chip and 8GBs of storage. Honestly I will upgrade in October once we know if there is an update coming this year.

YEAH! I find it amazing how the ATV3 is still performing lovely for many. I loved it at the time and it replaced everything that was connected it our TV in the lounge. It was a game changer!!!!!!!!!! And later at £59 insanely priced.
However, ATV4 instantly replaced it for me because of just two things 1. WSL World Surf League on the app store and 2. 60fps video - essential for me as I shoot everything in 60fps AND MOST IMPORTANT AUTO FRAME RATE. For a couple of years I was really confused by the jerky panning of iTunes films when played on my MacBook and Apple TV 3 - it was only later that I understood about 23.976 fps for film etc - thanks to the guys on this forum!!!!!!!!!

I have to wonder if Apple believes upgrading the ATV at this point would distract customers from Apple TV+ and it's "plays on any device" design...

Maybe later...

Apple will have more events, No one said the Apple tv upgrade was coming today. Don't be surprised if it comes around the same time Apple + comes out

I guess Mark Gurman was right, only an OS update for Apple TV 4K.

The good news is my ATV4K purchase a few months ago was smarter than I thought.

More good news for you, When the new version comes out, the current Gen does not stop working, it will still be just as good

WOW. So yeah — no announcement for an AppleTV yesterday (September 10)! I had bought the 4K one precisely 14 days ago... and well — looking to return it and get a new one of they’d release one — my main concern is the “ageing” A10 processor... but with the 4K version being leaps and bounds better than the ones before it (I had gotten one in 2015 and returned it right away coz it was CRAP slow) — with an interface and experience aligned with iOS — I guess I can wait a good 1 or 2 years for “the next best thing”. When I saw how fluid the interface was at the AppleStore I just had to get this one.

Bah, I’ve been waiting for a new release for a while now. The Netflix app is great on my 2017 LG, and the Amazon Prime app is....functional, but I decided a while ago I want to completely disable network access on my tv for a variety of reasons.

I realise it’s way too late in the cycle to be buying an ATV now. Especially given that I’m a stickler with Apple stuff, I only ever buy anything Apple within a couple of months of its release. That way I never feel burnt when a new iteration comes out.

Cracks me up when people buy an iPad/iPhone etc just outside the return window of a new version and then moan about it on forums. If you visit tech forums, you really should know better lol!

The only exception is the Thunderbolt Display. I bought it a couple of years after it came out in 2011, I really wanted it having had some poor Mac+Dell monitor experiences, but was mindful that a new version might come along any moment. 6 years after purchase, still no successor*, heheh. And it’s still working well, a great (obviously dated) monitor.

*I’d buy the Apple XDR + stand...if I had a money printing press.

Shame, I was really hoping for a better looking Zwift experience on Apple TV.

Basically wouldn't be any point buying an A12 ATV over the older A10 one then for someone like me that just wants it to run a game like Zwift?
It depends. All we know is the A12 chip has been used in mobile devices with very constrained power limits in order to achieve battery life. In an Apple TV that is plugged in, these limits vanish and the chip can be "overclocked" in comparison to the iPhone, leading to better performance. We just don't know what they are up to, I wouldn't worry too much about that :)

In some reviews, gaming is better on A10X. In others, it's better on A12.

A10X is the only one of the two that supports 120 Hz (and sometimes 120 fps) gaming though if you're into that.
I‘m not sure I have read these reviews. All I‘ve read was A12 is better across the board, that‘s why I‘m wondering.

And why should the A12 not support 120 Hz if the A10X variant does? I know that the iPad Pro displays go up to 120 Hz whereas the iPhone displays do not.

Zollotech did a review comparison of the Air 10.5 vs Pro 10.5. He didn’t benchmark but commented that not only was zooming in much smoother on the Pro in one game, in another 1st person game, the Air visibly lagged occasionally while the Pro didn’t at all. It’s about half-way through this video:

Good question about the 120 Hz but its possible that A12 wasn’t built with 120 Hz in mind.

Thank you for including the video, but this is really completely because of ProMotion and its 120 Hz screen. And the A12X in the current iPad Pro supports that as well - but I see where you‘re coming from: Every X variant could do 120 Hz, and non-X variants possibly not. I‘m excited for the end of October now :)

The better zooming on the Pro may be from 120 Hz. The lagging in the second game on the Air is not. You can see a visible stutter on the Air, which cannot be explained by 120 Hz.

Yes, I hear you - lots of factors to include here. It wasn‘t even the same location in-game, maybe it was graphically more intensive? Maybe the Air ran out of RAM in that particular instance and the Pro recovered better, maybe there was a background task finishing up. Stutters like that are very uncommon from my experience.
