Its basically a Ipad Air 4th Gen with maybe some features removed (like Non laminated display, slower USB C speeds etc). I highly doubt they will retool this chassis to have a Touch ID button in the bottom Bezel like the current ipad 9, rather they will go with the current power button Touch ID. Hopefully it keeps its £329 price, but I suspect it will get a slight price increase. Either way will sell very well.

The headphone jack is redundant

Not any more redundant than any dedicated jack on any other device
(where you could theoretically convert one port to another with a dongle)

It's like saying the headphone jack on MacBooks is redundant because one could simply get a USB-C to 3.5mm dongle instead..

The ports that returned on Pro devices are (comparatively) modern, digital and actively used ports. The headphone jack is ancient, analog and used by increasingly less people - even if only for sheer convenience.

The headphone jack is over 50 years old, because it works. Headphones don't degrade or expire. You can plug in a pair of headphones from the 70s and they'll work with your modern device and still output good sound. Your wireless headphones all have an expiration date because of the batteries in them and the lack of an aux mode

… or - you know - develop the wireless connection further to eliminate the current shortcomings. The problem is not the wireless connection per se. You can already transmit lossless audio via wireless connections today.

No you can't. That's not lossless quality. That's just "less lossy."

The problem lies in the codec and/or the hardware implementation. Good old Bluetooth was developed primarily for power savings, less for audio quality.

Future wireless connections will be able to transmit lossless audio without problem - I think I even read somewhere that Apple is actively pursuing a better wireless connection to allow for better audio.

No matter how much you develop wireless connection there's some things that cannot be eliminated, like battery degradation. Eventually your AirPods will no longer hold a charge and because of how they're designed the battery cannot be replaced. Meanwhile you can plug in a pair of AKGs from the 70s into your phone and they'll still output amazing sound

No need to stick to an inconvenient and increasingly outdated interface, loaded with its own shortcomings. The business politics driven reasons have already mentioned here as well.

Since when the hell is a headphone jack "outdated?" Again, the jack is over 50 years old because it's timeless and works. Just plug it in and go. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I do believe that Apple has hard facts available to base their decision on, while your reasoning seems to be rather emotional and subjective.

The hard facts being no headphone jack means they can easily sell AirPods making a lot of money.

So you are fine with long audio cables pulling on your headphones and getting tangled with clothing and furniture, but at the same time argue against simply prolonging that cable by a few inches using a dongle? Sorry, I don’t really understand.
Yes. I like having a solid connection and hifi quality. There's so many new things I can hear in a song through wired that I can't over wireless.

a7c.jpg

If you are happy with having to physically plug in your headphones, just keep a dongle attached to the cable and you still have to execute only one plug action.

Again, why can't the iPad have a headphone jack when it has the space for it? We shouldn't need to use a dongle to restore something that never should've been cut in the first place.

And if you’re an audiophile owning multiple and actively used, wired headphones, then plugging in a simple and inexpensive dongle is not too much to be asked.

I mean, it is just to be able to use a wired mic on my phone. And again, why should we need a dongle on our iPads when they're gonna be not moving much? If they cut the headphone jack from Macbooks are we gonna have this same conversation? Or what if they cut it from the Mac Mini/Studio/iMac?

btw. Your lumpsum statement of analog being generally superior to wireless is not fully correct. It depends on the wireless connection, codec and which criteria is measured: Convenience for example is highly favored amongst Apple audience.

Oh really? Let's test that theory by comparing the mics of the AirPods, AirPods Pros, and the old wired dirtybuds

As for the wired connection: The 3.5 jack is one of the worst possible audio connections - why don’t you demand proper 4.4 or 6.35 jacks or even XLR?

You're strawmanning. 3.5 is widely used. 4.4 and 6.35 are specialty jacks used for very specific headphones.

The vanilla iPad is one of most affordable ones. People on a tight budget often stick to wired connections simply for cost reasons, so the target audience of the Vanilla iPad is better suited with such a headphone jack (though I’m pretty sure that the DAC and its sound quality are nothing to write home about).

So...you just proved more why there's zero reason to get rid of the headphone jack on the iPad

Different target audience and different situation, with multiple adapters necessary and very active use of the mentioned ports. Analog audio - not so much anymore …

That's what people said about magsafe getting cut, and yet it still came back even for the Macbook Air.

I'd hope so!
The entry level iPad, the iPhone SE and the 13" macbook pro are eyesores in the Apple lineup.

Hang on they've kept the home button!! It just doesn't need to be there anymore with how iPadOS works now.

There's also no Smart Connector on the rear which makes me doubt the accuracy of these renders. They've probably got the overall form factor and screen correct but not the fine details.
Keep in mind that a massive audience for this model is schools and education. I would imagine young kids would find it much easier to use a Home Button than swiping up, especially when a slight pause in the swipe can open multitasking and lead to more confusion, and some apps lock the home bar so you have to swipe twice.

Hear hear!

I really want Apple to always keep a home button model around.

The simplicity, ease of use and easy to understand nature of the home button and what happens when you press it is genius..

The game of "swipe roulette" as a replacement for the home button is very frustrating and confusing for a variety of user types/ages.

The screen shape and camera bump remind me of some Chinese Android tablets that make their products look similar to iPad (but just different enough to avoid being sued).

And there's a reason for that. You're listening to the power of an analog signal with a solid direct connection, which means you can get lossless quality. Bluetooth headphones convert the audio to digital which causes compression so some of the quality is lost. Wired will always be superior to wireless because of...you know...physics. It's also why wireless mics are absolutely terrible while wired mics on even cheap bootleg headphones sound better than the mics on AirPods.

This is why the headphone jack should come back to the iPhone and never should've been cut from the iPad. We gave wireless a try, now it's time to go back to practicality.

So with this in mind, to say "stop clinging to this analog port" is completely nonsensical when it's still widely used and superior to wireless, and a lot more nicer than having to use a dongle, especially when most of the time the iPad is not as mobile as an iPhone so it warrants having a headphone jack just like the Macbook has. There's ZERO reason the iPad lineup shouldn't have one when it has the engineering to have one especially when the vanilla model had one last year!

I bet you told people who wanted HDMI and SDXC and magsafe back on the Macbook Pro to just use USB-C too huh?
Yup. And I have an mbp16 from work and don’t use those ports. I have DisplayPort and SD on my Thunderbolt dock.

What you do with a docked laptop while connected to a variety of other peripherals is not justification for including (or not) ports on the machine itself.

It's of course nice flexibility, but if we followed that line of reasoning, we'd have machines that have nothing but one universal port and everything a user wants to do should be "adapted to with a dongle/hub".

It's simply a different discussion vs what are great dedicated ports to include on a device itself.

I agree that it’s a different discussion, I shouldn’t have engaged with his point about HDMI/SD in a conversation about an analog port.

The mainstream customer base LOVES the home button, so that a win for Apple. If they can keep the price hike minimal that will also be welcome.

Getting rid of the audio jack might not be so well received, but USB-C to audio jack adapters are cheap and readily available.

The USB-C dongles are cheap. Poorly constructed cheap.
I briefly owned a Lenovo tablet.
I returned it as there was no FM radio as advertised.
It didn’t have a headphone jack.
I don’t have any Bluetooth items. Why?
They require charging and drain device batteries faster.
My iPad is from 2019. I have no issues with the home button, but, a larger screen instead would be great. The iPad Air isn’t much larger than the iPad.

Most other rumors out there have the base iPad switching to USB-C, which means the original Apple Pencil would be incompatible. I’m sure Apple would very much like to be able to stop producing two separate pencils at some point so this makes sense.
I never thought about that. Is there any other Apple produced device that has a male lightning connector like the pencil that would be suddenly incompatible when they drop Lightning?

If you need a new iPad keep it due to the discounts. Otherwise, new iPads are due to release in October.
I wouldn't replace a tried and true Apple product with a first-gen one.

Case in point: the MBA M2 overheating issues.

That's why I bought my wife's 11" iPP now. It'll be nice until it needs replacement, which won't be for YEARS.

Not sure if someone's mentioned this under this article already but it might be that when they release budget iPad without headphone jack they might instantly re-introduce it on new M2 iPad Pro models as a pro-only feature 😉.
I mean, it's how big corporations operate.
Took them long enough tho, but could be possibility that it's exactly what they are planning to do here.

I doubt it, given AirPods sales have been pretty good for Apple.

That said, the MBs have a port still, so anything can happen in this new Jony Ive-less Apple era.

For a start, a serial port is now called USB.

Also, why you against a headphone jack? Are you a dongle lover?
A USB port is a serial port… 🤦‍♂️

And I don’t think anybody loves dongles. Some people are fine with dongles. Others will use wireless earphones due to their convenience.
I have the USB-C to headphone jack from Apple. It is so cheap, it could break just looking at it cross-eyed.
I have a set of JVC wired headphones and use them frequently with my Android tablet from Nokia, even though the headphone jack is in a stupid location.
Apple doesn't cater to anyone. My way or the highway.
How rough are you with your adapters?

And sorry, but you only represent yourself, not everybody else.

I wouldn’t exactly expect an Android tablet from Nokia to be of high quality. Just saying…

You’re in denial then. Those are CAD files directly from Apple. That’s what it’s going to look like. 🤷‍♂️
Oh yes, I love wasting money on wireless headphones that need recharging all the time, connectivity issues and is complete e-waste when the battery fails after time.
The only thing you are “wasting” is your energy. Focus on improving your patience and stop obsessing over “e-waste” every time you say something online. Apple is able to recycle your AirPods.

I assume your wish will be granted. :)

People probably said the same thing about the colorful iMac, but they had the time period of the rip-offs completely reversed. ;)

Are you sure that the knockoffs won’t come after Apple releases its 10th generation iPad?

Clickbait YouTubers really made that issue overblown. Did you own an M2 MacBook Air yourself and have overheating issues? I assume you purchased an M2 MacBook Air because you didn’t plan on doing anything intensive with it.
That said, the MBs have a port still, so anything can happen in this new Jony Ive-less Apple era.
The MacBooks have a headphone jack because it fits and is more common to use than it would be on a mobile device.

Could we get that front-facing camera onto the landscape rail across all iPads, please?

I guess that's never going to happen.

The adapters are flimsy. I don't need them. They are patiently waiting until someday when I do.
I don't care to represent anyone else, but I'm not alone.
Insulting my choice of tablet is not necessary. Has everything I want less GPS.
It is better in some ways than my iPad. Even though my iPad was refurbished and cost $209, my Nokia T20 is just as functional and was on sale for $179.
Better than Amazon Fire 10. Better than Samsung Galaxy Tab A.
For the money I paid, better than iPad.
How rough are you with your adapters?

And sorry, but you only represent yourself, not everybody else.

I wouldn’t exactly expect an Android tablet from Nokia to be of high quality. Just saying…
I never wear earbuds. Never! On ear only. Why drop that kind of money when my hearing is poor. My JVC headphones were probably around $25.
Learn the art of patience and then consider purchasing a pair of Bluetooth earbuds.

Stop clinging to this analog port. Buy old devices if you want old features. I don’t whine that my mbp doesn’t have a serial port.

Apple doesn’t just get to save one port and sell more AirPods, they also get to remove an internal DAC. It’s such a stark contrast to be outputting an analog signal from some of todays most modern digital devices. And im just gonna say what others have, the usb-c port is todays most modern port, and you can get a DAC plugged into that if you need this analog signal.
Well if you like your wired headphones and if you like to DJ then this port is essential.
But yes, I'll be buying the 9.
