this has to be about managing the fab supply chain. fewer chip models to make - there's certainly no application that needs more power.

Apple is developing an Apple TV with a faster processor, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The set-top box will have a new chip, and it is slated to come out in the first half of 2024.

The Apple TV will have the same design as the current Apple TV 4K, with Apple not tweaking the look. Little else is known about the update at this time, but Bloomberg says that though it will have an upgraded chip, it is unlikely to support 8K video streaming.

Along with a minor update to the Apple TV, Apple has other smart home products in the works. There is a device that combines an Apple TV, smart speaker, and FaceTime camera into one, but launch timing on such a product is unclear as it has suffered some design setbacks.

Apple is also developing a smart display that would serve as a sort of home hub for controlling HomeKit devices, making FaceTime calls, and more. That product could launch as soon as 2024.

Total nothing burger.

We are weeks into 2023. Who would care about this?

I know apple sites rely on 80% speculation :rolleyes:but even this one is a big so what.

What Apple should consider. Making Apple TV a hub for various devices now connected to a TV. Remove the TV from management of all sound. That would make Apple TV HomePod combination a fully functional soundbar for no better term. Plus integrator for other devices like turntables. LG demonstrated a similar concept at CES this year for their wireless TV. Apple knows best, right!

That sounds like completely backwards thinking, why would anyone want to walk up to their TV to charge something? Literally probably the most inconvenient spot to charge lol. And if you did want that, you can simply already have a dock right next to your Apple TV plugged into the same outlet the Apple TV is plugged into. I just don't see the benefit of having that integrated into the Apple TV itself. Also why the need for a video input when AirPlay is way more convenient? This whole product idea is so weird to me, sorry lol.

Some of us use the Apple TV connected to a monitor on our desk.

It would mean not having to switch inputs on the display. The monitor I’m using has a process for that making physically swapping cables is easier.

It would be that many fewer cables to deal with as well.

Also, AirPlay has a delay and quality degradation so when playing a game or something in a format Airplay doesn’t like a cable becomes beneficial or even necessary.

AppleTV must sell well.

why does it need to be faster its already fast enough, what's the point of these releases
Among other things
- to track RF specs. It will presumably have WiFi 6E and whatever Bluetooth is up to at that point.
- to track TV specs. Maybe there'll be an HDMI 2.3? Maybe DolbyVision will be updated?

There are other things they could do with it, like add a TB port (to allow connecting a drive) and allowing software to run on it that acts like an HTPC (eg to run a Channels DVR server on the aTV).
Or add a (detachable) light sensor that can sense light levels and slightly adjust the image to compensate (the way iPhone/iPad provide TrueTone).
Likewise provide a detachable camera that you can place somewhere in the living room to provide an ambient image/sound on the TV. (Think eg Christmas day with your TV and the parent's TV each showing, throughout the day, what the other house is doing.)

Admittedly these are unlikely, but you never know – if the incompetent cabal running aTV finally get kicked out and people who know what they are doing and with some imagination take over...

Could they maybe fix all the remote disconnection issues with the current model first?...

Faster processor?

Will it make video play faster? 🤣

In a perfect world it WOULD upsample (and do it WELL) all video to 120 (or 240Hz) to make motion glass smooth...
Apple now has upscaling (spatial upsampling) in MetalFX, so that's step one along this path...

Apple should just do what Roku does and put a button on the AppleTV itself that, when pressed, makes the remote chime so you can find it.
Apple has done one better, just pull down the widget page and the remote is right there on the bottom row! Haven’t used the ATV remote in years. Sits in the drawer. Phone is always with in reach, easy to use, never gets lost (hopefullly)!

Tim Cook in 2024:

"Today, we’re introducing three revolutionary products. The first one is a new Apple TV. The second is a new HomePod. And the third is a breakthrough video communications device.

… are you getting it? These are not three separate devices, this is one device, and we are calling it HomeBase."

My original Apple TV HD is faster than all those Roku and flex box devices. How much faster is this?

How feasible is it that Apple creates an M-series console type Apple TV? We've seen their push into services and I could imagine Apple investing into bigger games with broader appeal on Apple Arcade. They have what they need to do it.
There were so many strong rumors pre-covid that Apple was taking gaming more seriously in some capacity, and the game controller patents to back it up, that it feels like at some point this was probably a thing being considered. They even hired that ex-Xbox guy.Now though... Been several years since those rumors circulated and things have changed a lot. Apple's cutting spending, inflation's crazy, management of Apple Arcade changed, new consoles launched, etc.

My feeling is whatever stomach Apple had for pushing gaming much harder than they have been went away with the uncertainty of the past couple years. Personally I want the same thing and I hope they revisit it. Chances are low though...

Apple has a *lot* of work to do getting their current ecosystem figured out anyway. So many Apple Arcade games are horribly optimized for Apple TV or not available at all. On top of that there are tons of high end paid apps on iOS that haven't been pushed to work on TvOS. If Apple took some of that Arcade money and just pushed way more devs to make their games work on Apple TV you wouldn't even need a "gaming class" Apple TV. The current one has all the power it needs to run stuff like the Final Fantasy Pixel remasters, Disgaea, KOTOR, Valkyrie Profile, Stardew Valley, Streeets of Rage 4, Lunar: SSSC, etc. Apple just needs to actually get all that rich iOS content on to Macs and Apple TV and we'd all be way better off

what is the point of all the posts about future (sometime) products being faster?

Like we know there will be a new model sometime.
And it will be faster.
And if the US dollar ever drops, the rest of the world might get a break on pricing again...

It's not news, it's not rumour, it's not even speculation. It will happen 99.99% for sure.
