It's catching up to the Mac Mini tho. 13+ years and going strong I guess.

The design of the Mac Mini is what you would call reaching its zenith, there's just so much you can do to it. Its all about the utility of the device.

2024 is looking like a huge upgrade year! I am so torn right now regarding my upgrade from my iPhone X. Will see what the iPhone 15 Pro Max looks and feels like. If its not to my liking, then I will get refurb iPhone 14 Pro Max, but could potentially wait for iPhone 16 Pro Max if Apple offers another year of support for the X.

There were so many strong rumors pre-covid that Apple was taking gaming more seriously in some capacity, and the game controller patents to back it up, that it feels like at some point this was probably a thing being considered. They even hired that ex-Xbox guy.Now though... Been several years since those rumors circulated and things have changed a lot. Apple's cutting spending, inflation's crazy, management of Apple Arcade changed, new consoles launched, etc.
Maybe the 4th generation Apple TV 4K will be capable of running apps designed for VR headset, but formatted for the TV screen and using their new gaming controller that works on both VR headset and Apple TV. Just a wild guess.

If it's about the utility of the device why not release a midnight or jet-black Mac Mini?

Noooo dude! you have to upgrade this year. I don't want Tim Cook to get mad. It's us little people who end up suffering. You have to let go of that iPhone X. Come on!

Why…..? Even my 2021 Apple TV 4K is powerful enough for what it does. It seems utterly pointless to make an even more powerful one then the current model.
I use my Apple TV every day and enjoy it. It’s a good device.

I reckon since they are using binned A15s that weren't up to snuff, that by end of 2024 the A15 devices will be all but phased out and they'll move on to perhaps the A17.
I think this is the most likely answer. The AppleTV is a good place to put newer chips that aren't quite good enough for the phone or iPads as the needs of the AppleTV are pretty well covered already so they can clock them lower and not really have issues. I wouldn't be surprised if the A15 update was basically this, and just so they could phase out production of A12 based things.

Apple TV just uses binned iPhone chips, so it’s not really about if tvOS needs faster hardware. I won’t upgrade my A15 for a few years tho.

Some of us use the Apple TV connected to a monitor on our desk.

It would mean not having to switch inputs on the display. The monitor I’m using has a process for that making physically swapping cables is easier.

It would be that many fewer cables to deal with as well.

Also, AirPlay has a delay and quality degradation so when playing a game or something in a format Airplay doesn’t like a cable becomes beneficial or even necessary.
Lol you're describing the most random and odd scenarios possible. If switching inputs on your monitor is a pain then just get an HDMI switch for like $10 or something. If you want a dock then just get a dock. When you say "some of us" I think what you really mean is you lol. Hardly no one does that, and certainly not enough for Apple to change their product to accommodate such a random scenario. Apple is only going to add features that make sense and would benefit most users, not a teeny tiny handful. And even the last thing you said, I still don't see the reason for the Apple TV to exist at all in that scenario. If you're playing a game then just have that device plugged directly into the TV/Monitor like normal, literally just leave an HDMI cable ready to go, or the HDMI switch I mentioned earlier, to plug your device into, I just don't see the purpose of why the Apple TV needs to be the middle man in that situation when it makes more sense to bypass it altogether.

Tim Cook in 2024:

"Today, we’re introducing three revolutionary products. The first one is a new Apple TV. The second is a new HomePod. And the third is a breakthrough video communications device.

… are you getting it? These are not three separate devices, this is one device, and we are calling it HomeBase."
I’d hope and surely imagine they’re not calling it anything as rediculous as that. In the UK there’s quite a large chain of home DIY stores named that.

Change the look...why do we get the same looking products for 8 years.
Because they realized they were wasting money/designs by swapping every two generations.

& I’m not defending them but what’s the point of it looking different? For excitement? How much can they iterate on a small black set top box

hmmm I honestly thought the current one would be the last one. You’re telling me Apple will make a new one that is faster?! Thanks Mark 🙄

Apple has done one better, just pull down the widget page and the remote is right there on the bottom row! Haven’t used the ATV remote in years. Sits in the drawer. Phone is always with in reach, easy to use, never gets lost (hopefullly)!View attachment 2144438
Ohhh. Yeah it’s really cool that that’s an option. No doubt about it. I’m a sucker for real remotes though. I had my fill of using my phone as the “remote” with the Google Chromecast (prior to them shipping with remotes). That’s just me though.

Yeah the Apple TV is one product I don't want Apple to change, it's as simple as it needs to be. Unless of course they release a stick version, something the size of a Chromecast, now that I do want and I don't understand why Apple doesn't do it.

They sure seem like they could. Only thing I think holding it back is preserving margins. But if anyone could sell a stick for $100 it’s Apple. They have tons of powerful low power chips.
