I will ALWAYS take an update for the Apple TV. Always. Even if it is just a spec bump on the chip and nothing more.

8K support has more to do with media/content than hardware. I'm sure the hardware is about there now, but how soon will Apple and all other streaming services be streaming 8K? I don't think we're there yet. Maybe not even next year.
While the Mac Firefox 109.0 can support 8K SDR AV1 with the below video
Safari Version 16.3 (18614.4.6.1.5) (RC) can only show VP9 and 4K comparably.
I thought I read that Technology Preview 161 added experimental support of AC1 or AVIF support in Develop menu.
Below is a useful status of browser AV1 support

The assumption is Apple on AS SoC's could make it happen but is procrastinating such as A15 APTV 4k via a tvOS app.

Maybe the 4th generation Apple TV 4K will be capable of running apps designed for VR headset, but formatted for the TV screen and using their new gaming controller that works on both VR headset and Apple TV. Just a wild guess.
Yes, instead of using an A chip from the iPhone, it might be more efficient to use an R chip from the AR/VR headset.

Waste of money I saw no improvement in the 2022 model. I will not buy another new model again. I upgrade my TV and sound system for and my new TV produces Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision as well as HDR AND HDR10 just not seeing what the fuss is about for buying this device.. I was doing just fine with the 2021 model and I was still getting all the above HDR HDR10 AND Dolby anyways..

Our ISP also provides cable, so we finally decided to go with one of their 'bundled' deals which was actually less per month. The setup box is smaller than the Apple TV - runs on Android. I gotta say the experience isn't all that bad and I can switch between cable, games and apps: Paramount, Disney, HBO, Apple TV+, Prime, etc. No reason for my Apple TV at this point, other than to mirror an iPad or other device. Don’t really miss the Apple TV. I actually have a single remote (that is actually user friendly) now for just about everything (less the switch and PS5). I don’t see us upgrading Apple TV, or even using it long term.

Maybe if Apple TV turns into a more high end gaming console. Don't see the point if the end use is 90% streaming videos, music or looking at photos. There is way more benefit to upgrade performance of a computer or phone.
LOL. No.

why does it need to be faster its already fast enough, what's the point of these releases
Apple wants cash. Some of us feel massive compulsion to have "latest & greatest." See the threads when the latest one was released. Many with the next oldest model seemed to be desperately hunting for any little push to motivate themselves to "upgrade."

All it’s missing (still) is the HDMI hardware for broader 2.1 feature support . Would be nice to see that chip get updated and see a more feature complete 2.1 implementation. For those that would like it.

The hops in AppleTV resolution follow the camera in iPhones and iPads being able to shoot at that resolution. So if we start seeing rumors the next iPhone will shoot 8K, the best way to toss 8K video shot on that iPhone to an 8K TV will be a new 8K AppleTV.

Historically, it has seemed to be iPhone first (resolution upgrade), iPad and then AppleTV soon after iPad. For the 8K AppleTV rumor to gain steam, look for iPhone 8K camera rumors to start flowing. Else, if this is a rumor that will become reality, the upgrade is for something else.

people said this about the most recent atv 4k release. yet i saw massive improvement to how quickly it can load super high quality remuxes across my network. they launch nearly instantly now.

at this point, perhaps there's something that can be said about diminishing returns, but there always seem to be use cases people have where they can gain a benefit.

Along with a minor update to the Apple TV, Apple has other smart home products in the works. There is a device that combines an Apple TV, smart speaker, and FaceTime camera into one, but launch timing on such a product is unclear as it has suffered some design setbacks.
Add support for an external USB camera and microphone, which should enable the software ecosystem to make it a teleconference device. There's no need to develop another device (and support it).

... and proper multi-user support on the Apple TV – with authenticated user profiles and screen time support.

They should really work on the freaking remote before they worry about making the Apple TV faster - mine CONSTANTLY disconnects on my new 2022 model. Constantly.

Couple of thoughts from me about this

First, I'd love for the Apple TV to support 4K 120hz UI and Apps. Dont know why the current Apple TV doesnt already

Second, as to why Apple might keep updating even though the current Apple TV 2022 is more than fast enough; It might be cheaper/more cost efficient for apple to keep updating instead of asking chip makers to keep building old chips just for the ATV. Additionally, we already saw the 2022 Apple TV 4K move to a fan-less design which definitely saved some money (which lowered the entry price for us consumers).

I'll never say no to more speed tbh. Still happy with my 2021 ATV 4K

We got the current model to replace the original 4K Apple TV (which is now on the basement TV), and while it's a little bit faster, it's hard to tell the difference aside from the remote. We don't use it for gaming, so it's probably better there, but as a media player, the remote is the bigger difference.

I have two Apple TVs, but I think they are a rather boring product. Just another streaming device. Apple needs to step up his game.
