Since Charles Dickens died (1870) [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Dickens#Notable_works_by_Charles_Dickens]
before the Berne treaty was signed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berne_Convention_for_the_Protection_of_Literary_and_Artistic_Works) his works existed before the foundations of international copyrights had been formed. If he or his publisher had bothered to get on a boat and register a copy of his books with the Copyright office here in the US his works would have been protected (as much as the law allowed in that time period.). Since they did not, they were not. The same was true for his works in France in that term period (however, they probably did dash across the channel to do a multiple country file). Most likely the snoozed and they lost money. If you like to point out where the rule of law in the US was not followed and he lost money let's see the example.

It doesn't change the fact that copy right piracy was quite happily sailing along when it suited a particular nation - you could have recognised copy right works registered in the UK but the US chose not to. That is the reality - and now you're complaining about China not recognising your copyright or patent registrations.

By the way China joined Berne in 1992. What is there excuse for not following the rule of law in this century?

When has any country followed what is in the treaty?

Diversions? LOL. What, like this off topic, inaccurate observation you injected into this thread? Or high fructose corn syrup as it relates to HD video disks or iMacs features?

Nice to see you pick and choose what to quote whilst IGNORE THE WHOLE DAMN POST WHICH TALKED ABOUT THE ECONOMY AND THE ROLE OF CHINA IN TTHE WORLD - ARE YOU ABLE TO READ THIS OR ARE YOU BLIND!???????!!!!!!!!

Please. CH-DVD players are hot because of the cheap disks.

http://arstechnica.com/business/new...cs-outsell-blu-ray-by-3-1-margin-in-china.ars

So the players themselves are just as expensive as Blu-ray is here. This disks from the back-alley vendors are going to be even cheaper.
Plus the chuckle on the difference that some folks here swear doesn't exist in the content.

That says diddy squat about "blaming china" the "fall of the American Empire".

Bullcrap, it has to do with the expensive writers, the expensive media, the expensive nature of the whole damn thing. Tell me why I can't pick up a BluRay burner in NZ for under $300 - come on, tell me, why can't I pick up an external USB or Firewire BluRay burner for under $300. If what you say about me is true - then you should be able to point to one within 5 minutes of seeing this post.

If you ever buy a laptop from Dick Smith's, you're overspending. Especially if your dumb enough to buy one of their "amazing" Acer E-Machines they have on sale.

The vast majority of users are like that - they go into a big name retailer like Noel Leeming, Dick Smith, Bond & Bond to purchase their computer. Love it or hate it, that is the reality.

I custom order mine. $3700 almost, but I got everything I wanted and then some

That is the biggest masturbatory non sequitur I have read in quite a while.

"Most people drive inexpensive cars they buy at their local dealership"

"Actually I bought my car in Italia and had it shipped over here, of course I had to pay for a few very expensive modifications to make it street legal here."

No, i just bought the laptop from the manfuater because I wanted to get what I want.'

and why must everyone bring up the car thing in every apple discussion thread?

oh by the way, hows Sam Adams, KATU ran a story saying hes getting the boot.

I'm saying that many people do what you did when buying a computer, there was no reason for you to say how you got yours as your situation is atypical.

When did you hear that bit about Sam Adams? As far as I know he's been cleared of all charges, but he may be stepping down. Or at least bowing out and not running for another term.

I live like 10 miles from you, over in Hillsboro (hence by user ID, I work at the one on TV highway accross from the home Depot)

Because you don't represent the vast majority of people - the vast majority of people go into a retail store to purchase their computer. They want to go in, they want to touch, feel, ask questions, look around - heck, there are some people who make a day of it, look around the whole day at computers and comparing them to each other. That is what Joe and Jane do - you, I and everyone else here don't represent Joe and Jane Doe.

The certain iMac G3s had VGA ports on them. I can't seem to confirm that they would accept input though. I've heard mentions of it though.
For video out.

AFAIK, no iMacs have had the capability to be used as an external monitor with a cable connection.

If Apple allowed their iMacs to be used as external monitors that would indeed be quite a surprise.

I don't see what the excitement is about Blu Ray. <snip>
Agree.

For back up storage, I don't see it either.

External HDs are very cheap as you mention. But to me, convenience is another issue. If I have 500GB to back up, I can connect an external HD via FW800 and clone it using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper in a few hours of non-attended use.

With BluRay, I would have to set up each disc, then wait for the burn and verification. HD back up is so much more convenient and faster.

As for watching movies, with Internet bandwidth improvements and the convenience of on line purchase and rentals, I think we are seeing a movement away from physical media and this trend will only continue as things keep improving.

On a personal note, I'm renting more and more. Given a typical $10 movie that rents for $3, you can rent three times and still come out ahead.

PCI slot.
PCI like a PC? Don't see it.

PCI slot card slot on the Motherboard? Don't see it as the industry is moving to PCI Express slots.

Express Card slot? Don't see it either.

SD card slot. Possible. Already the MBP13 & 15 have a SD card slot.

Built-in digital TV tuner, DVR and 5-channel
Apple has toyed with built-in TV tuners in the past. The TAM and some other models had them.

I don't see Apple including this option because for those limited few that want it can just purchase a USB TV tuner.

There are a few TV tuners that are available and for a reasonable price. Additionally, TV around the world is to different standards so it is best to purchase a USB tuner that works in your areas video standard and frequencies.

I actually like the silver better than the black, maybe its just me.

I will go out on a limb and predict what the next gen imac contains.

Blue ray reader /dvd drive (blue ray burner high end)

Core i5 quad core, theres no north bridge chip now, more watts for the cpu.
Led screens.

Ssd hard drive option.

40nm Ati video card (not sure on which one).

Multi touch key board and no mouse.

Unibody enclosure (as per mb pro).

I may be wrong but this is the computer that they need to make to take full advantage of snow leopard.

Apple have used nonstandard intel chips previously...

Led screens.

Ssd hard drive option. Space for 1 3.5 and 1 2.5 inch hd.

40nm Ati video card (not sure on which one).

Multi touch key board and no mouse.

You think that is bad, over here in NZ, the cheapest Mac Pro is $5,999.99 including GST (GST being 12.5%).

Close, but not quite true. Apple's online NZ store lists the Mac Pro as starting at NZ$5,599 including GST and free shipping, but you can get it a little lower then that (NZ$5,512 at MacWarehouse is the best I found with a quick flick around some websites). Of course, you do still then have to add the cost of a display. :(

JB Hi-Fi tend to have the cheapst Mac prices I've found in New Zealand, but they don't sell Mac Pros.

The big chain stores definitely are pretty hopeless (JB Hi-Fi told me yesterday that Apple no longer make keyboards with numeric keypads!), but as long as YOU know your stuff, you can get some reasonably good deals - for example, Dick Smith were bundling Mac Office or an Airport Express with Mac Books / Mac Book Pros recently, I'm not sure if they still are, but that's quite a good deal if you want both (or even if you don't and can sell the "bonus extra" on TradeMe).

damagedrighteye - that's good but I don't see why the standard qwerty keys can't be software based too. On that basis the whole keyboard (external interface) could be made more adaptable for example - piano keyboard for GarageBand.

my top 10 was:
1/ height adjustable stand
2/ lose the ugly black (dellesque) back
3/ lose the ugly black apple on the front - go chrome (no not google)
4/ extra cost option of matte screen (up to $60)
5/ introduce express card slot (yeap I know it's not a laptop), for easy upgrading eg USB3.0. Or at least a multi media card reader.
6/ consumer accessible for upgrading HDD (along with RAM of course)
7/ multi-touch "keyboard" external interface with software functions e.g a touch keyboard (when required) and other options eg piano keys for GarageBand etc
8/ as part of the multi-touch "keyboard" interface - lose the mouse(!) for a touch pad interchangeable with number keys.
9/ the idea of a slide-out tablet is interesting - or some kind of docking facility (even if just like the new ACD's)!
10/ OK Blu-ray

people, use google if you want to search for iMac docks.

I just think the UI for they keyboard should be the same as the iphone OS keyboard

I don't see what the excitement is about Blu Ray.

When CD burners became mainstream, most HDs were fairly tiny.

When DVD burners became mainstream, many hard drives were in the 40GB range (and below for laptops)

Now you can easily buy 1TB disks under $100, but blu-ray is not yet mainstream. By the time that it is, we will probably be at 4+TB.

In addition, external drives are getting cheaper constantly. You can get a 500GB for around $50 these days. I don't see the benefit of paying that much for burning 25GB or 50GB.

When you've grown up and have a 65" plasma, and you have 25-50 clients that want you to deliver what you produce on Blu-ray discs for THEIR 65" plasmas, you'll "get" Blu-ray.

Pun intended.
