Blue Ray, Matte screen, SD card slot AND price cut

No matter what Apple is going to come out with - as long as one can use an iMac as a signaling device over a distance of more than 20 miles in bright sunlight I will not buy one. So !!! Matte screen is the most wanted thing for the semiprofessional multimedia user. The next best thing is Blue Ray that I can think of. SD card slots and a possible price cut would be just in time for the christmas season and highly welcomed by most users.http://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/smilies/eek.gif

Quad Core

I'll be surprised if Apple doesn't finally put a quad-core into the iMac.

It's been too long that people could see that "the quad-core PC is twice as fast as the dual-core iMac". (I know that's quite a stretch, but I'm thinking of the "bigger is better" non-tech people reading the Sunday ads.)

The Core i7 will wait for the Mac mini-tower this fall - Apple won't want to "fatten" the iMac for cooling.

I am sitting 3' away. Time
and time again, everyone can tell the difference. The box shows you what is being transmitted. 1080p ( not streamed yet), 720p, 1080i and everyone canbsee the difference. 720 has more if a looking glass, sharp view. 1080 interlaced is fuzzy in comparison. 1080p would be the sharpest. There have been study that p scan rates a sharper anyway.

LOL... who watches movies on a 24" screen??

LOL... who watches movies on a 24" screen??

On the airplane, I'll watch them on my 14"....

Why are there so many posts that fall into the "I wouldn't want to do that, so nobody should be able to do that" category.

If someone has a BD movie and wants to watch it - why shouldn't they be able to?

I have quite a few BD movie discs, I frequently travel - why shouldn't I be able to stick a couple of movies in my bag and watch them on the plane or in the hotel?

Exactly. Does it bother you that someone is using something you don't like or don't use?

Well, actually Apple *has* infact just rewritten its entire OS

actually if you go with comments from Apple, the need for Leopard to be on a computer to install Snow Leopard and the reduced price, it is unlikely that this is a rewrite of the entire OS. more a massive fine tuning of Leopard to add 64 bit support, remove the last of the os9 stuff and clean up some other issues.

-- and is about to release Snow Leopard around the same timeframe we expect the new iMacs.

YOU expect new imacs. based entirely on the 'knowledge' of rumor sites. and an unsubstantiated belief that Snow Leopard means they must be updating the hardware.

A touchpad won't just cut it, because people want to touch their photos, videos, heck, even their music. Do you really think the iPhone would have been such a killer device if it just came with a touchpad?

1. YOU want to touch your stuff. don't assume that means everyone does
2. the iphone/touch is essentially a giant touchpad.

Someone mentioned HD-DVD here, correct? I can't remember.

Anyways, Engadget says Toshiba, the company behind HD-DVD, has applied for Blu-Ray Board of Directors admission.

HD-DVD really is dead now.

Engadget also has pics and specs on the Core i5. Might that make it into the iMac? Sorry for the digression, I'm kind of excited. I'd have the following lineup: Mac mini, MacBook have Core i3. iMac, "xMac" (tower) have Core i5. Mac Pro, MBP have Core i7.

And it seems Intel and nVidia have sorted out
licensing deals for i7 and i5

So it now just comes down to the power load

A little harsh. Sometimes there are legal reasons that companies cannot ship products to certain other countries due to trade restrictions, import restrictions [like your country says no], contract issues with particular manufacturers, or they are simply not allowed to do business in a country until they are licensed or other requirements are met.

It is more than likely not New Egg's fault here.

There are no legal reasons why they can't export it to New Zealand - if I went through a remailer as I did with my Archos player, I could get it without restrictions. The point I'm making is that there is nothing stopping them; export it over to the country and put a disclaimer that it is the customers responsibility to pay any taxes, duties or ensure that any local regulations are abided by and warranties for said products outside the US may not be valid. They could do that, but they don't.

I've sold things over seas for years - the so-called 'legal quagmire' that you're claiming does not exist in the case of electronics.

One of the other issues is a rewrite of the threading architecture to better support multi-core, and GCD as a library to make it easier to write better multi-thread programs.

Engadget reports the 15'' MBP now has a matte option. I feel it'll spread to the 13'' and then to the iMac then possible to the updated Cinema display lineup.

I just searched this thread for "TV" and got no results, so I take that as an indicator that nobody's thought of the iMac possibly incorporating Apple TV's features.

Of course, there's an aesthetic difference between sitting in a living room on a couch watching TV/movies, and sitting at one's computer desk doing the same. Still, I'm sure it could be considered a "compelling feature" for many.

Thoughts, anybody?

I'd add TV Tuner support to Front Row, then make a version of OS X called "Home Server" to compete with this idea from MS.

SL Server is $250, correct? If so, I've got to get a copy.

Even the iPod Nano has a big screen when compared to the wristwatch TVs you can buy. :)

I'm not sure what size our main TV is (32" or 36"?), but I've got a small TV in my room that's only about 15" ... it's smaller than the two 17" computer displays - one plugged into my PowerMac and one into this hopeless old Windoze PC.

Wait, so if Front Row is essentially Apple TV on an iMac, then why are Apple TVs still being sold?

I've sold things over seas for years - the so-called 'legal quagmire' that you're claiming does not exist in the case of electronics.

Well, there may be. Electronics companies like to keep territories seperated in order to set different pricepoints. E-tailers like amazon don't ship electronics or media to europe for this reason.
This may be because of contractual (legal) reasons, or because they don't want to sour the relationship with suppliers.

I have to agree, get rid of that damn shiny face. I still have my white iMac (7600GT variety) and skipped the last generations of iMacs to go with a MBP (2.4 9600GT) in clam shell mode using an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor. My house has a good number of windows and I am not changing my office layout to mitigate any design defect.

So, Blu-Ray Write capability and matte screen will get me to buy a new one... well make a 27" version too!
