I generally use my smart phone to check email - don't have to lift the heavy iPad just to check emails. Browsing the Web - the 11" MacBook Air wakes up instantaneously and provides more functional web browsing at mere additional .33 kg.

The fact remains that there has been no point in using the iPad - except novelty.[...]

Sorry - but you are NOT the measure for the whole world!

iPad vs. smartphone: The advantage of using the iPad vs. a smartphone for eMails would be the massively bigger screen on the iPad.

Think of people with poor eyesight (or simply comfort-oriented people who don't want to fiddle with a tiny smartphone display), who would prefer the bigger iPad display any time - or older or injured people with weakening or restricted movement of their hands, who can probably more easily use the iPad's screen than a small smartphone screen.

iPad vs. MBA: While the MBA is a very fine machine (i do own one myself - 2nd gen. 13"), it is somewhat uncomfortable to use while sitting relaxed on the sofa or sitting/lying in bed shortly before sleep. Not to mention using it on your lap while commuting to work in a train. Personally I'm using my smartphone on the train, but i could imagine that people with poorer eyesight than me would prefer an iPad as well in that situation (e.g. for reading newspapers electronically).

Yes the MBA does have a physical keyboard (unfortunately not illuminated anymore), but when someone wants to write longer texts that person would either sit at a desk anyway or simply go directly to his or her stationary computer (if available).

So in my opinion, depending on the situation, the iPad's functionality can be superior to that of an MBA. They do complement each other, not necessarily substitute.

Eh I personally don't care much for a back camera on the iPad. My phone I do care about tho cause it is my main camera that I always have with me.

They're not going to release a camera that's only 1 MP. Got to be another explanation.

i see this happening. ipad is not a device to take photos. however 1mp is great for video recording in hd. just look at the example of ipod touch. honestly, would you be taking photos with iPad? if i see someone taking photos with iPad i would just come in front of them and say: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

honestly rear camera in ipad doesnt make sense. only front facing camera for facetime and webcam

Well, IF this is true. It's a deal breaker for me. APPLE, IF you're going to put a camera into a 5,6,7, or $800 device, don't put a toy camera in it. 1MP is NOT enough. I bought the iPod Touch with the crappy cam but I won't get this one.

This time around there is competition, and not crappy competition, real competition. Please Apple, don't lay a turd on the back camera.

Hey SJ, Get well soon. :apple:

even without camera, there is no competition.

my conc.

my conclusion for this discussion:

iPad doesn't really need a camera, since you won't be running around to take photos or shooting video. however having a camera in it is possitive, since there are many apps that take advantage of the camera, like games and utilities. so that's why the camera is there.

Taking photos with iPad just doesn't work. If you're expecting in doing that, then you are wrong, and when you realize, you will not be using it at all for that purpose.

1: iPad needs a camera for apps.

0: iPad doesn't need high quality camera for photography.

1: iPhone 4 does need a good camera.

I'm a filmmaker and blogger, so I would definitely be taking photos and videos on my iPad. In fact, I'd probably begin filming, editing and publishing all-in-one if Apple releases an iOS compatible iMovie app. Sorry if I'm wrong, but that's just how I'll do it.

Looks Like you are going to have some pretty Crappy product.

When you (If you) go pro you will laugh at this decision.

I'm not trying to be mean, but what you are trying to do is just not realistic, even if the camera was better

It's not for still images, it's for HD video... Apple is assuming correctly that to take stills is stupid... But video is useful.

No, a 1MP camera is better than nothing. As someone who has owned the 1st, 3rd, and 4th generation iPod touches, I have no qualms in saying so.

Most "filmakers" I know use, like, a REAL video camera and a desktop professional system...

I guess it's like the whole cameraphone thing - just becuase a person has one makes them a professional photographer...

without wanting to hurt your feelings, i'm the one sorry for you. you will be losing your time until you realize that the product doesn't meets your expectations. As for editing in iPad? that's a very bad bad idea, you just don't have processor power enought to do it, right.

I in no way view my iPad as a picture taking device.

I admit a front facing cam for vid calling would be useful but to be honest I am not even that bothered about that either.

I use it for reading, surfing, emails, general time wasting. If I want to make a vid call I can use face time on my iphone. Which is always with me as my iPad sometimes stays at home.

Lets face it the iPad is great but we do not need it to do all the things a phone can do as it is not a phone.

I will not be buying V2 of the iPad or V3 I am happy with V1 and will not be suckered in to upgrade because all the cool kids have.

I wanted an e reader mainly so the iPad is great for this and lounging in bed on sunday mornings reading the news and catching up on episodes of my favorite shows that I have on my iMac through plex.

Plus you would look a total tool holding up the iPad to take a picture....

Why does everyone talk about "reaching" for their phone or iPad when the situation arises?

The thing that made the camera phone the best camera on earth is that you are already using it in the first place. You capture photos that were previously no caught because you already had the phone in your hands.

Now if you are using your iPad, and the most incredible thing imaginable happens right in front of you, what do you want your iPad to be equipped with? A 1mp web only camera, or a 5mp print ready camera?

The ipad is not going to be thinner then an iPhone 4. Not a freakin chance. If they can't fit it due to it tapering off too much, then that is a design flaw.

Now i know you are not going to see guests at weddings holding up iPads, but that does not mean there is not a use for high resolution imaging on the device. I dare anyone here to tell me a valid reason as to why a 1mp camera is better then a 5mp camera.

Applications for such a camera are huge.

From a personal point of view, my iPad has become the most important computer in my business. Sure i have workstations and severs which take care of their specific duties, but the iPad is without me everywhere. It do email, note taking, record keeping, spreadsheets and keeping up to date with important web services.

Unfortunately, I have to keep an iphone with me at all times to take photos of receipts, products and visual logs. A 1mp camera would service most of that, except for the fact that I would not then be able to print the images or view them full screen on my workstations without enormous pixellation.

When I bought the iPad i knew it didn't have a camera, and i was fine with that. I would still buy another one without the camera. But don't waste my time by giving me a product that does not fill the expectations of its purpose. Leave the 1mp camera for the Facebook kiddies. Give us something that we can at least print with afterwards.

Megapixels are overrated. 1 MP ≈ 1024x768. So the photos you'll likely catch is the occasional ones for publishing on Facebook and the web. And then 1 MP is more than enough for at least my needs.
1MP is fine for Facebook photos as a final output file size, but you wouldn't want to acquire an image that way. Oversampling is your friend.

Toshiba is about to release Android tablet with 5.0 MP rear facing camera (and stereo speakers). One can check their web site here (warning for iPad owners - it's Flash based).

I wish it was already here! :D
Last weekend I sold my iPad, for 90% of it's purchase value. ;)
So the iPad2 is definitely going to be bought by me.
The camera doesn't have to be a high quality one, I have a Sony Nex 3 with 2 different lenses for my photo and video stuff, but I would love to Skype or Facetime with the iPad2.
I'm moving from the Netherlands to Curaçao (Caribbean Island part of The Kingdom of The Netherlands) this June and keeping in touch with friends and family, with freedom in communicating, is very welcome.
I can already see myself walking around the house while Skype's running on my iPad. :D

You do not need to wait for iPad 2 for that. Buy Samsung Galaxy Tab and move to Curaçao right away ;)

A decent quality 1 MP sensor is perfectly adequate in most cases. Assuming there will be a 1 MP rear-facing camera in the next iPad, it will be HD video. I'm more interested in pixel size, sensor size, quality of the lens, etc. A 2 or 3 MP HD CMOS sensor would be cost prohibitive and overkill at this stage of the game.

I can think of many uses for one. In addition to bar code scanning, VR apps, etc. - imagine the usefulness in healthcare, for example. iPads are currently being field tested in the hospital where I work. Eventually, with a rear facing camera (a la face time), virtual assessments can be done. If one has a complicated/confusing case, point it at your client and send the live video quickly to another specialist for his/her impression. The iPad has the potential to help save lives.

FYI - take a look at this article regarding video sensors.

"A decent quality 1 MP sensor is perfectly adequate in most cases". Probably true. However, a decent 3MP sensor would be perfectly adequate in all tablet-relevant cases. Yes, it would cost more - $2 more to be precise - which is probably too much for Apple.

"Nobody will be using this to take a picture with" - lol!!!
This comment was found in so many post - are you guys serious or just lack imagination???

I can totally imagine being on a bus traveling in the mountains of Buda in Budapest... while relaxed [after finally standing on the crowded buses in the city] I unwind by reading an ebook on my ipad.

As the long ride up the mountain ends I then see some breath taking monuments and views toward the capital and so my ipad already in hand I hold it up, framing the 'perfect photo' and instantly have access to a portrait of beauty to view and show off at the end of the day [large quality] to friends/family not having to hover over a tiny iphone screen.

Honestly, "no one will use it" - I was surprised at how often this was said.
Could be and I respect that some would not... but it definitely has benefits and defending its absence is just silly, as if you don't need it just dont use it. ;)

Yes, it may be that Apple is either wanting to hype up the camera of the ipad 3, and when Apple does it will be fun to see that their new advertising will be something similar to what I shared... and how everyone will suddenly find this a worthy addition.

Or it could be a typo... unfortunately Apple isnt known for putting the top of the line parts in a machine. [Been using the mac professionally for some 17+ years... the macbook pro is by far a 'pro' machine, as an example, its more mid line and if you search the discussion forums is riddled with problems from displays to dvd drives which are never resolved.] ;)

Its all good, as its what we currently are offered, but there is so much potential that has been left unexplored, as well as what potential we could do with the type of products being released.

p.s.
Think of it, they have video editing for the iphone. [Im a video producer/director]
Which makes more sense, editing on a small iphone or on an ipad??? :)
[Just trying to add a different dimension to how people are viewing and limiting their view on the subject.] ;)

Don't worry, you'll all buy the ipad 3 when it comes out with a 2 MP camera.

The ipad 5 may even have a FOUR MEGA PIXEL model. Assuming the brilliant engineers at apple can pull off such a feat.

What are you guys going to be using the rear camera for? For me the only real use for it is when I am using facetime with my parents in france. I will hold up the iPad, flip to the rear camera so that they can see my daughters and what they're up to whilst I can see the picture still so that I frame it up properly. As for taking photos,i don't see it. I make take movies, but then megapixels aren't my concern. Photos, no.
