It's not for still images, it's for HD video... Apple is assuming correctly that to take stills is stupid... But video is useful.

As has been shown by all the warm and welcoming reviews both the iPod Touch and Nano got when they were released with ****** cams.

I can't imagine what a 1MP cam would be good for. Shooting videos with such a large device is even more useless than using it for stills or app supported features. Heck even the screen now almost has more pixel than those shots would have.

It's not about how many pixels a camera has for christ sake.

Well I would agree if we would be discussing 10 vs 12 MP or 8 vs 5MP maybe even 3 vs 5 MP .. but at a certain point the resolution becomes to crappy to be usefull.
I personally would put that limit somewhere around 3MP of the 3Gs, as bare minimum for a useful camera .. everything below that resulted in me not using it, because the images produced where next to useless.

Yes, this.

And his tolerance for "useable" is seemingly lower than mine.

1MP= One MR Phart

This rumored camera will mainly automatically take pictures of the iPad user when trying to look cool and actually looking like a phool

1. The iPad really doesn't need a camera, it does everything just fine without a rear-facing camera.

2. What it really needs is a good front-facing camera for FaceTime.

3. Having said, that, if Apple were to include a rear-facing camera (which it seems they will), then using a 1MP sensor is just evil ... and to justify that by blaming it on the ridiculously tapered design is even more evil. Nobody cares if the product is a 100th of an inch more thick ... the usability of the higher resolution camera sensor far outweighs the pain of lugging around a few more ounces.

Just my 2c.

Well only second u on number 2. Number 1:Nope, a device witch have the oppurtunity to see pics better and bigger than on iPhone
, i would rather like a 5mp cam on the back, to make things easier, i would also pay more for it.

I'd rather have no camera than a lousy 1mp. This is 2011 now not 2001. Hopefully this is just Apple's idea of a joke.

1 Mega Pixel camera for video is a joke.
This rumor can't be true.

Tiny camera's with more Miga Pixels can be used these days and 1MP just isn't enough for any of todays demands. (not saying that the more Mega Pixels the better video you'll get because there are more important factors than only the amount of Mega Pixels)

If there is a 1MP device coming out then it won't be the new iPad but something totally different.

+1 for the case cover proximity sensor. The only problem I can see with this, is at night, and if you have it the "wrong way" round, then you may accidentally cover it. Therefore, Apple should have two. Also, Apple should have four touch sensitive home buttons, which light up, when it's nearest to the ground / in line with the orientation.

-1 for the camera. It should be at least in line with the Xoom: 5MP!

Makes sense. Cutting cost in useless parts such as a rear facing camera makes the "retina" display seem more realistic.

It doesn'y make sense, 1 Megapixel is late 90's technology when evrything was blurry and grainy. Whay installing something that won't work?

Apple is pissing me off, they are building shi**ty products today so they can still sell you a better one tomorrow with yesterday's technology. Why? to fillup the world with trash.

I'm amused at how so many actually believe this story is real -- that Apple would even bother to put a 1mp sensor in a rear camera. You guys have been punk'd.

If the point of using a 1MP is to cut cost for a 'useless part' why not go even further and simply not include anything. After all, there is no law that says that Apple must put in a rear camera. No matter what the fanboi etc will try to tell folks

What I do most with my rear facing cam on my iPhone 4 is 'scan' document with jotnot pro or docscanner. I really hope whatever cam they put on iPad 2 would be good enough to produce high quality scans as does iPhone 4. If not, major bummer, dude!

these forums really go to show how widespread ignorance is. Apple iPad2 now with rear HD video camera = wow, coollll!! Apple iPad2 with rear 1MP camera = Lame, epic faaaiiiilllllll!!
HD Video camera = 1MP = Duuuuhhhhhhhhh.

Oh, and has anyone else noticed that the moment one poster mentions "I really love Apple but ..." you know that the next few sentences are going to be some pointless ramble about how bad Apple suck.

Can tell me what a rear facing camera on a iPad would be good for? It's going to be really annoying if the next iPad has useless things like a rear camera, but not have a better screen.

I might be the exception here, but I would use the camera extensively for work to take pictures of field equipment and then annotate on the spot with markups, measurements, etc. I can see other professional applications for it in medical, engineering, and science.

One megapixel would be a joke and other slate products would have a commercial field day with it. Better not to have the rear facing camera at all.

To everyone complaining:

GO BUY A REAL CAMERA.

It's an iPad, not a dSLR. Who cares the resolution is. The camera lens and sensor is still going to be too small to give you a great picture anyways. It's pretty clear this camera is just for face time, where you can flip the video feed to show what you are seeing. And for that, VGA is fine. It will work better trying to send the video signals over the air if it's lower resolution anyways.

I concur drop the rear camera which most people will get little out of it and give us full blow Retina display letting us enjoy the perfection of a good looking system.

I have tried to figure what would be the reason anyone would want to lug around a big ass Ipad to take pictures, just seem ridicules all I want is "Facetime" and something like ichat that you can conference at least 3 more people as well as allowing conference call with software execution. :D

Good bye laptop. :)

And even that the chances of actually using Facetime to show people something your looking at are so miniscule. So yes go get a real camera if you want to take real pictures, or use something like the Iphone. I can imagine a dork :p with an Ipad at the sequarium taking pics
