Haha to those of you that are waiting for the next gen iPad... So far it's gonna have the same display resolution and a 1 megapixel camera :p

exactly i thought the same thing. by the way the developers would be kind of in a kinky situation if they rose the resolution again (≤iphone 3gs to ≥iphone 4)

Omg, 1 mp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are finally making the move into the 21st century! Sooooo, there isn't much that is looking impressive on the new iPad2. Same res, cr@ppy cam... some extra ports you can use that you can get with the camera connect pack. Pretty sad, actually.

It'll probably come in slimmer packaging, too!

The iPad 2 definitely needs a rear facing camera. Think augmenting reality apps. It would be a major disappointment if the advances in augment reality could not be used on iPad 2.

Along with a few others on this topic, I really don't see practical uses for a high megapixel camera on the back of an iPad. I fully believe that the front facing camera is a great addition, but the back... not really necessary IMO. :)

The sensor seems like a no brainer!

My PowerShot S100 Digital Elph from nearly a decade ago has 2.1MP on it. Then again it's a dedicated camera and a Canon.

Perhaps Apple intends that rear camera to be used for things other than taking pics (which would be ridiculously awkward to do anyway) -- like augmented reality.

The camera in itself doesn't bother me, but the implication does...

1 mega pixel is significantly less pixels than a retina display would have... so bang goes that as well. looks like next ipad update is going to be a big meh! as far as I'm concerned.

It looks like im going have to go elsewhere for my 2011 gadgety fix, and god knows there is enough competition this year.

1MP sucks but I don't care. GIVE ME RETINA!

^ see my post above :(

Apple are hardly likely to offer a display with more pixels than it's camera can actually shoot. Looks like 1024x768 for yet another year. (which actually feels like it is so 1995 ;) )

It would be foolish to add such a low resolution camera, especially if it couldn't even fill the native resolution of the supposed iPad retina display.

So either the rumor is incorrect about the rear-facing 1MP camera, or iPad 2 isn't going to have a retina display.

EDIT: Looks like "MacRumorUser" beat me to it by posting the same thing moments earlier...

A rear camera would be most useful for Augmented Reality and for showing people things on FaceTime; applications which only need 1MP or less.

And occasionally you could take snapshots or video with it just because you don’t have your real camera along—assuming your phone doesn’t have a decent camera (many do now). 1MP to have a spontaneous shot of something you didn’t expect to need a camera for is OK. Bigger than you’d email or show online, not ideal for printing large.

A high-MP rear camera would have been a cool novelty, but seldom that vital since an iPad (due to size) is a poor primary photography device. Some might use it as their main camera... but not many.

And a high-MP camera can make a WORSE video camera! That’s why the latest iPod has a better video camera than the iPhone 4 (which is also pretty good, admittedly). As I understand it, the failings of the iPhone 4’s camera for video are:

* Narrower field of view (nice for some situations, but it’s narrower than a typical still shot, for instance); this is because the video recording only captures a frame of pixels at the middle of the larger sensor. It’s like a crop.

* Unavoidable wobble from the sensor.

Both of those problems can be helped by using lower megapixels.

So I actually hope this is true! If there is a rear camera, I don’t want 5MP!

Lame

From what I'm hearing so far it sounds like iPad 2.0 is gonna be lame.

With the currently rumored specs, I will definitely not be buying this thing.

Nah, I'd say this is the Facetime one and Apple is messing with us with the file names. Where are the references to the FRONT facing camera? Oh wait, there aren't any ... You think Apple would put a REAR facing camera and not a FRONT too? That's just crazy, because you can't Facetime with that, and everyone is positive that there will be Facetime on iPad 2

So it will have a 1MP Front facing Facetime camera, and no rear, IMO.

I'm thinking this as well.

Why does iPad need a rear camera?

QFT

All it needs is a front camera thats good enough for facetime. No one seriously needs to be taking pictures with their ipads when out and about. The fact that there is a camera at all in the rear is just an added bonus, to me. I'll use my phone to take pictures and video, thank you very much.
