It will kinda suck if Apple only uses a 1MP camera. The Samsung Galaxy Tab already has 1.3MP front and 3MP rear cameras, and the upcoming RIM Playbook will have 3MP front and 5MP rear cameras.

I'm pretty confident in Apple to not let the competition outdo them. It'll be interesting to see what they put in though.

Some people will never learn. It's not how big it is, it's what you do with it that counts. (so people keep telling me) ;)

This is true to an extent, but maybe for 3-5 MP.

1MP is rubbish. There's too much interpolation with few too many pixels for it to be of use. Artifact city!

Ridiculous

If there is a rear-facing camera on the iPad and if I ever see anyone taking a picture with it, I'm gonna knock it out of their hands. It's not meant to be a photography device. Come on people that are whining. Think about how ridiculous you'd look.

Will it have a huge aperture or giant sensor. 1MP is so pathetic it's almost insulting. My oldest piece of crap cell phone from 6 years ago has a camera better than that. 3MB cameras and parts have to be so cheap and readily available, they cost virtually nothing. Come on man!

I'm just going to wait and see on this one. Maybe Apple wants us to think this, so we'll be pleasantly surprised when it actually come out :)

That's what she said! Just kidding. I'd love a high quality 1-2M pixel camera in the iphone or ipad. One of the big half inch sensors. They can take some awesome pictures.

Not true, I can see a lot of uses for this. When liasing with clients who need to see how things are happening on site/location etc. Infact I could thikn of a lot ways I could use this, and I'm sure developers could think of a lot more!

This camera is for FACETIME ONLY! 1MP is more than 720P - so the rear camera on the iPad can do HD quality facetime... that seems sufficient - yes? What the hell would you EVER use a rear camera for except for when you're facetiming and switch to the other camera to show what you see. Nobody is EVER going to take a freaking picture with their iPad. I'd be surprised if there was eve a camera app on this thing. It will be facetime only.

Thank you! Finally someone with some common sense. People on this blog are just all caught up in numbers. Yes, the iphone has a better camera, but then again, it's a SMALL phone, not a BIG tablet. And yes, 1 M.P. has enough room for 720P, which is 1280x720, which is equal to .92 M.P.

2 M.P. would basically be enough for a 1080P Full HD picture.

Golden Rule: If you don't like it then don't buy it.

1 Megapixel is not cool. I think the proper word is "meh."

P-Worm

did anyone here think that apple was going to do anything more than nickel and dime us on this one?

although i love apple products, i still never feel like i have "arrived" when i purchase their stuff. its like 95% of the hardware/software is leaps and bounds above the competition, but on that one crucial thing they are a total miss:rolleyes:

Kind of pathetic,

apple products have been great sellers not just because they're "cool" but because they performed very well, they chose not to skimp or cut corners. Just look at the iPhone 4's retina display. I'm not sure how you could argue that this not apple skimping.

foolish

Oh yea, that's really competitive with the 5-10MP cameras that will be found in all the products that will be challenging the iPad 2.

To scan in a photo/document perhaps.

Although I too want to see more pixels, and would gladly pay more for an
iPad with a good rear camera, the number of pixels isn't the whole story.

It also needs a flash and an autofocus. Certain applications (like Google Eyes)
won't work without autofocus. The iPod Touch camera doesn't have autofocus
and, if you point it at a product or barcode, Google Eyes can't recognize it.
But the iPhone camera does have autofocus and works great with Google Eyes.

1MP - No way!

I'll say it again... this is a Decoy.

I'm guessing this is just a decoy put in there by Apple because it needs to be in the Beta release, but they didn't want to disclose the real MP's yet.

I'm betting we don't see any less than 5MP's if not more for the rear camera.

I'm not going to read too much into one string in a file, but:

Megapixels really don't matter unless you're printing
It's all about the lens and sensor.

I don't think there's a technical reason why my camera, instead of having 21MP, couldn't be built with a 1MP sensor and produce the same 1280x768 images that I resize 21MP to for emailing etc.

It would probably have much better low-light sensitivity too.

Perhaps this is just to mess with people looking into the the sdk?

If there sacrificing camera quality to put a retina display in think about how even more crappy pictures are gonna look on the ipad.

Is 1MP even clear enough to scan barcodes and such up close?
I think the iPad should at least have the same camera resultion an the iPhone 5.

Honestly when will you ever use the rear camera on an iPad? hardly ever, but when you do don't you want to at least have a decent quality picture.

Kinda hipicritical of apple since they are always pushing quality and innovation on there "magical" devices.

exactly, I agree. i think it will be no less than iPhone4's camera. Everyone is watching them right now, they're not gonna go giving anything away...

That's a problem with the Google Eyes app, not the iPod touch 4.

The iPod touch 4 works just fine scanning barcodes and recognizing objects with other scanning apps such as Amazon PriceCheck, LetScan, RedLaser, ScanLife, Microsoft TagReader, TheFind.

Apple knows what actually makes sense. You guys are always complaining about apple not supporting this format, not including this port on this thing, and yet we still buy apple products and enjoy them very much. We're not running a multi-billion industry - Apple is. And unlike users on this forum, Apple actually has to think through on their ideas - a piece of life that seems to have been forgotten here.

That's understandable. You are not going to whip an iPad out your pocket to take a photo. The camera's primary function will be to provide the 'what your looking at' image in Facetime.
