These are all things to throw you off. It will be at least a 5MP camera...maybe even a 8MP camera...and the front will be a 1MP or even a 2MP camera.

Agreed, it's been a bad week for iPad 2 rumors. Hopefully they are dialing back the rumors so when they announce the new iPad all the new features will wow the public.

Honest to god y'all make me fall down laughing when I see these idiotic news headlines generated by MacRumors and taken directly from BGR site.

Apple will no doubt continue to make a monkey's out of sites that make sweeping generalizations and predictions about yet to be announced iPad hardware that someone thinks points to one thing or another in an early beta release of an SDK.

Do ya really think Apple doesn't know that people are going to be digging away at the inner recesses of these releases desperately looking for hints of the things coming down the pike?

Of course they know, and of course they never ever give their hand away, and people should know that by now.

I wouldn't get upset or all riled up about any of this just yet.

Everything remains to be seen.

What do they say about patience being a virtue, I know a completely lost concept with this crowd!!

ummm no.

My friends pictures vs my iPhone 4 pictures can't even compare.
Megapixels are just as important as how you use them.

The point is that a larger sensor with lower MP can capture a better image than a smaller sensor with higher MP. As the photo sites get smaller they become more susceptible to noise. Look at how grainy pictures from cheap point and shoot cameras get in low light conditions.

Sure more MP is generally a good thing but it doesn't always equate to a better picture.

That doesn't make sense that it would be lower resolution.

You know a prototype might use a lower res camera and the software may be set up for the prototype. It doesn't mean the future version and accompanying software couldn't change.

Like looking through Petroleum Jelly!

I have held off on buying the first iPad and was all ready to place my order for the 'ipad 2'. This news has stopped me dead in my tracks. I will wait for the iPad '3' (or perhaps the 6--I mean, maybe they increment the camera one MP for each iteration? You never know with those secretive Apple folks.)
Truly, this is shameful. If this is just conjecture (and we all know the history) perhaps some of you 'diggers' can scoop out the real story. Maybe it's incorrect (I did try a little petroleum jelly on my rear facing camera to simulate what you would see with1MP and folks, it's not pretty!)

Yeesh. I really hope this is all a bunch of Apple-rumor steering...as the commenter above mentioned. IF not, THEN the iPad 2 is going to suck enormously...Ive been holding out for the next gen specifically for a higher DPI screen and iP4 comparable cameras. Worse part is, Apple could just add a POS VGA front camera to the existing model and expect people to line up for it.

Please Apple, 2084x1536 display + improved CPU/GPU/RAM + iP4 equivalent cameras = HUGE competition squashing success.

Cool!

1mp kinna sucks but to be honest, although it would be slightly embarrassing to hold up my giant ipad to snap a group picture out in public... I would look over and see everybody else holding up their iPhones and them looking at me like "Really......?"

I agree whit you for the cool site of it,
but just think for a moment.
When you take a photo whit a 1mp camera,
zoom in and then look to it on your iPad, the quality will suck.

Even when I take a photo on my iPhone 3GS (3mp) whit zoom it already suck when i look at it on My iPhone…

Are they even making 1MP cameras anymore? Or did Apple pay $3.9 in strategic investment to some manufacturer to continue making 1MP cameras, LP records, cassette tapes and some such exotic stuff?

I could think of only one reason for Apple to do this - LOLz over screwed customers. That is possibly unlikely so it has just got to be the case that this rumor is crap.

Meh, is right. The iPod touch back camera isn't very good, so this won't be much better. As long as it takes decent video.

Wow, there is a lot of ignorance in this thread. And that's just the first page!

The rear camera is for HD video. FaceTime and other apps. Heck, FaceTime doesn't even support HD video right now, but I guess Apple's putting one on there in case some other app wants to capture at a higher resolution.

(1) HD on the iPhone 4 is better than HD on the iPod touch 4 even though both have enough resolution for 720p. (2) More megapixels increases the success rate with scanning Barcodes. (3) If you want to take pictures of documents with reasonable quality and email them you'll want more than 1mp. (4) Apple is including a camera app with the iPad 2.

HD video cameras are actually fairly common still, so yeah, they're still being made.

Folks, Who's going to be taking high quality pictures with an iPad? That's hardly comfortable. Can you imagine lugging this around to take photos?

The rear camera is for a few uses on this device:

- FaceTime - doesn't need high resolution
- Applications - apps that use the camera for scanning barcodes, identifying objects, providing augmented reality imagery - none of these need anything higher MP

BS. Pure and simple.

I dont get the disappointment people have with the backfacing camera being 1 MP. it should be a bigger disappointment this means NO hi-res screen as you'd need a 3 MP resolution for native resolution augmented reality.

You dont use it for snapshots people, it's there for augmented reality and scanning. 0.8 MP is what is needed for this.

My main disappointment besides that this debunks the retina rumors is the lousy VGA resolution of the FaceTime camera. Really Apple, is it too much to ask for native resolution Face Time? You need a lousy 0.8 MP camera for this.

I dont need a backside cam, i just need a proper FaceTime camera, not some lousy VGA resolution.

i can see the GSM/CDMA models needing a cam for augmented reality but the wi-fi models dont need it. Better use that money for a decent frontcam Apple!!!

Add a 5 MP camera with autofocus, thank you.

But as always, you have to wait for the third revision of an Apple product before you get what should have been there in the first place. So predictable.

You are doing it wrong

The 1mp camera statements sounds ridiculous. It should say hd video camera.
Taking pictures here is second.

(1) Actually there are pros and cons to the sensor used in the iPod touch 4. Some people have found it to have a wider lens and more/better colour saturation. One of the benefits of using a sensor intended for video.

(2) Most of the apps I've seen for scanning barcodes use video. The iPhone 4 is limited to 720p for video, so there is no way that using a sensor with more pixels would benefit these apps in any way.

(3) If you want to take pictures you need a still camera, yes.

(4) The iPod touch 4 has a camera app, too. I'm not sure what your point is here?
