What are you guys complaining about.

Nobody's will be taking pictures with an iPad. It just doesn't make sense. I think that the rear camera is also for facetime (so the person you're talking to can see exactly what you are seeing. That's it. What more do you want?

You guys seem to complain just for the sake of complaining. Why do you need a 5 M.P. camera? Because the iphone has it? Sounds fallacious!

A 1 MP camera likely won't have the resolution needed for apps like Word Lens, QR readers, and other document scanning/reading/analysis apps to work reasonably well.

I think that every single post here was useless.

It says clearly BACK FACING so it means that it faces YOU not what you can see with your eyes (FRONT).

The new naming scheme is probably due to the fact that iPad is meant for a high level of user interaction. And at least 1MP camera facing YOU is the clue to a HUGE facetime experience.

1MP? At that quality, I'd rather them scrap the rear camera and put more money into a better Facetime camera.

To be honest 1MP sounds ridiculous even for a rear camera.

I guess 2MP or 3MP would have been decent enough but I know people are going to defend this move.

I believe Apple should have at least used the same camera resolution as the one found in the 1st Gen iPhone.

1Mega-pixels is pathetic.

Apple would appear to rather have you purchase an iPhone for everything.

oh yeah that what i call revolutionary a 1 mp camera yeah the competition is seriously lagging behind apple.

1MP? That's ridiculously lame.

Wow, there is a lot of ignorance in this thread. And that's just the first page!

The rear camera is for HD video. FaceTime and other apps. Heck, FaceTime doesn't even support HD video right now, but I guess Apple's putting one on there in case some other app wants to capture at a higher resolution.

There are no cellphones that record higher than 720p, including the iPhone. The dual-core Tegra 2-based LG Optimus 2X will supposedly record 1080p, but it doesn't even have a US carrier yet.

The Flip HD camcorder, btw, still sells for $150. And it's just a camcorder. And it doesn't look like they offer a 1080p version, either.

That's weird, because the iPhone 4 can only capture video at 1MP and it seems to work fine?

A one-megapixel camera? Are you kidding me?

Way to go, Apple. Thx for putting 12 year-old tech in the next-gen iPad.

1024×768 video = 1 mp.

That's what the iPad should be from here on: a video machine for filming and editing on low-end. Could be an indie film perfect machine.

That said, I think it would be better to have 2mp that does 1080i video.

We'll see what they are doing with the iPad, soon.

Found a clip showing how a high-MP camera (meaning, specialized for stills) has a cropped field-of-view compared to a low-MP camera:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkOq2qgaSHo

I love my iPhone 4’s 5MP camera, and I love the great videos it shoots too, but that video clearly shows how the iPod Touch has a wider field-of-view.

On my iPad, I want field-of-view, so I hope it’s not high-megapixel.

(I believe the iPod Touch’s low-res sensor also reduces the rolling-shutter effect, but I can’t find a video showing that.)

It’s funny how people are up in arms over the iPad not being an awesome still camera... as if a 10” device is ever going to be a great camera replacement! And yet people also howl about how silly it is to even HAVE a rear camera. Guess people will hate whatever Apple does... and then buy one and love it anyway :)

Why are people up in arms about this? did you seriously expect to be taking 12MP Carl Zeiss lensed photos...with an iPad?

Seriously, uh no. But I did expect it to come with at least a five megapixel camera so that when I -wanted- to take a quick photo, the tech would be at least six years old.

Babies first steps? Your son's football match? etc etc...

Please, that's just the marketing shtick for Facetime. The number of people who'll reach for their iPad when their kid makes his/her first steps could probably be counted on one hand. Who's going to be toting an iPad to their kid's game? That's what the iPhone is for. Of the 5 people I know with iPads (including myself), none takes them out of the house for routine activities.

#1. You don't know that at all.

#2. If true, those fringe apps on the margin will continue to work on iPhone and iPod touch. Not every app is multi-device.

Guys...remember that for the past 2 years, there were also multiple rumors that said "such and such company" was making/supplying 3 to 5MP camera sensors for the iPod touch camera, and low and behold...it came out with a 0.7MP rear facing camera. Now that's a pocketable device that could ACTUALLY be used as a semi-replacement for a digital camera, and Apple purposely left it with a low resolution camera. And for those saying "the iPad is HD resolution so it will need a higher MP camera", the iPod touch is a retina display, so it's not far behind in resolution, yet still got the low MP camera. This shows that Apple only wants the rear camera on a non-iPhone device to be for Facetime (showing what the Facetimer is looking at), and not for taking still photographs. It'll still be able to, but not at high MP.

#1. You don't know that at all.

#2. If true, those fringe apps on the margin will continue to work on iPhone and iPod touch. Not every app is multi-device.

If #2 is true, and those apps (Word Lens, etc that use the back camera) will work on the 0.7MP camera on the iPod touch, they will certainly work on a 1MP iPad camera.

Why does the iPad need ANY camera? And don't say video calling... try holding an ipad out in front of your face for even a minute and see how comfortable that is.

Among other things, the following apps:

Word Lens
Consumer Reports
QR Reader
Dan Kam
Spyglass
AR Compass
Cyclopedia
Heads Up Navigator

And many many more. Augmented reality apps are gaining popularity, and there's a lot of nifty stuff out there. Word Lens alone is absolutely amazing and could be hugely successful on iPads with rear facing cameras.

Facetime. You're aware FaceTime.app uses 2 cameras? You're aware every FaceTime device has 2 cameras?

iPad w/ FaceTime = 2 cameras.

My Mac Pro with the Cinema Display is a FaceTime device but it only has one camera. Just go download the FaceTime app for the Mac from Apple's website.

The Proximity Sensor is what I'm really interested in! I don't care much for a camera.. I have only used FaceTime once, and that was in the Apple Store on launch day on my iPhone 4 with my friend who got one too.

Having the auto unlock/lock would be extremely useful, especially if you can turn the feature on/off.

Should we start guessing that the low-rent back-facing camera is to offset the comparably large cost of a better resolution screen?...
