I think it's the dumbest thing to have the headphone jack at the BOTTOM of the phone.

Not really, actually is something foreseen, because the new docking connector only have digital I/O, the Legacy Dock Adapter Requires to jack to the Analog Audio Connector at the same time to provide to the Legacy Accessories Analog Audio (and maybe Analog Video).

I Have used such configuration on Android Devices and is Very convenient because the cord never jumps over the screen, so you never need to move it away.

I don't think the new iPhone is going to look like this. It doesn't make sense to me. The S3 looks nicer to be honest.

It seems that every time Apple comes out with a new design, it's showered with hate. I remember how many people thought Apple would never release the 4; it was too "unApple". But now many people praise the 4's design.

Whatever Apple releases, in time it will be scene as a good design.

Well, maybe except for the hockey puck mouse....

I'll just leave this here. I'm calling fake on iResQ

nah, is just a bad angle, if you also do a line on the top and bottom of the device you can see it 'not lining up' also. Same w/ the 4S in the pic.

Why not have the same number of holes?

Any guesses which side is the mic and which side is the speaker? Is there any reason that would change from the 4/4S to the next generation?

I don't see why there couldn't be the same number of holes on the right and left sides. That would make the symmetry conscious among us feel a whole lot better.

You get 5 columm of holes on the left and 8 column of holes on the right. What is Apple thinking? :(

I'm saving money to upgrade my 3GS. If the next iPhone actually is what we're looking at right now, I think I'll go with the 4S.

That a good point, the location (adjacent to the new dock connector) might very well have a design intent beyond just plugging headphones into the bottom (that one compound connector looks like it had the analog connector for legacy out and/or extra stability).

We do occasionally use a simple line in with one of our cars, and set the phone in a cupholder, but that's far from any kind of deal breaker for the new phone (we'll get another car if we have to ... :D )

In before doubling down quotes.

lol, the thing I don't get about the people confused by the large number of leaks after Cook's comments, is it's not like you can decide/announce you're increasing security/secrecy and then immediately it happens. Apple has been in the middle of production for what's likely to be the biggest product rollout in its history. You don't interrupt that.

I wouldn't be surprised if some suppliers suddenly find they have much less work next round, though.

I know that there has been a lot of talk about the new design being too similar to the 4/4S and a lot of people have been complaining that they wanted something more radical. I don't agree with these opinions though there's nothing wrong with hoping for something very different I guess. But, I have to say, the new iPhone is starting to seem to me to be a masterclass in how to update a classic.

Here's the thing, if you look at any classic design, anything really iconic, over the years that design will shift and change. Sometimes it goes wrong - a really left-field take on a classic design can be new and interesting but it can lose the something special, the X factor, that made the design so great. The job of updating a classic design is really, really tricky.

Go too conservative and it starts to look stale. Go too radical and you can lose the magic. The trick is to design something that looks instantly familiar and also, in a way that people can't really put their finger on, instantly new too. I think this may be one of those designs.

The new bottom edge, as highlighted in these images, looks like an iPhone. If you had never seen this device and no one had told you what it was, you'd probably guess it was the new iPhone. How? I don't know. It just feels iPhone-like. The dock is new and the grilles are new but it just says iPhone to me. And the newly shiny, beveled edges that will now hug a screen and back that sit flush with the metal band instantly feel fresh but also evocative of the old design. It retains the instantly recognisable iPhone quality while also looking absolutely now, absolutely up to date.

Obviously taste is personal. I have it and most people don't... just kidding! No, seriously, some people will clearly not like this but I think we're seeing something special here. I think this will be a really, really great update to a really, really classic design.

The mic will most likely be on the left by the headphone jack and speaker on the right.

Have enough parts been leaked to fully assemble a phone? Maybe I'm just watching more closely this year but it sure seems like there are a lot more leaks this time around. But at least nobody left an iPhone 5 in a bar....yet.

Why does iResQ only give us two images? Instead of trying to make out details in their terrible pictures, we should have a full 3D view in high quality that's actually well-focused. It's 2012.

Why is everyone complaining about the asymmetry of the holes? The headphone jack is on one side, the speaker on the other.

If the holes were symmetrical, people would be complaining they could have used the extra space for a better speaker.

Ugh, that asymmetry is killing me.

I know, right? :)

And the buttonless iPod shuffle, which Apple even admitted was a mistake when the next iPod shuffle had "buttons" as one of its advertised features. And really, the Magic Trackpad should be rechargeable over USB. Someone had to make an entire company just to make something that would do that, and sadly, the startup did not receive enough funding to survive.

Fake

It s obviously a fake (or an early prototype) 5 holes vs 8 holes for the speaker, it's not something apple would design!!!

Symmetry is all well and good but people massively overstate how important it is. In fact, a device the is too symmetrical starts to look fussy. Imagine if the back of your iPhone had two cameras?!

Asymmetry, if handled well, can add a bit of variety to a design. People should wait and see it.

Not that much thinner after all huh? Or bad angle?

I think the 6th-gen iPhone is slightly thinner in the photograph, but you also have to consider the 4s glass faceplate sits above the top of the metal and the 6th-gen iPhone faceplate is rumored to be flush with the top of the unibody shell.

Is anyone else annoyed when they put the headphone jack on the bottom? That drives me nuts on my iPod Touch.

Why is anybody still using wired headsets? Bluetooth quality of the newer muffs is awesome.

Throw out the auxiliary jack with the optical drives from then MacBooks!

So is there a gap around the new dock connector? Still hope for a magnetic ring, or no?

It's kind of a hit and miss for me. I can see where when I have the iPhone on my desk or holding it in my hand the jack on the bottom will be better. but when I'm exercising and I have the iPhone in an armband, my jack opening is on the top, and the cord flows easier from the top in that situation.
