Is anybody else as underwhelmed as I am about the iPhone 5 getting thinner?? I truly don't want it any thinner than the current 4/4S or it will be extremely awkward to hold

Stunning

Motorola Razzr - 7.1mm
iPhone 5 - 7.6mm
Galaxy SIII - 8.6mm
Galaxy Nexus - 8.94mm
iPhone 4S - 9.3mm
----------------------
iPod Touch 4G - 7.2mm
iPod Touch 2G - 8.5mm

I have an iPod Touch 2G and this thing is flat, really flat, and if the iPhone will be thinner, Oh WoW

The only thing that matters on the next iPhone is L T E.

The hardware will always be better. Don't care about the screen or the dock connector or any of it. I'm sure it will be just great. But for the last 3 years the network has sucked beyond belief. I will never ever sign up for anything with ATT ever again.

Bring on real LTE with Verizon! Gimme coverage and speed!

sometimes I wonder if this "leaked iPhone" isn't the model which will replace the 4/4 S⃣ and the new iPhone 5 will be something completely different

This is exactly the information I came here to find--what this meant for the total volume of the phone.

If accurate, this new design is a modern marvel, even more revolutionary than the 4/4S design, and an embarrassment to other phone makers (assuming it doesn't have antenna issues/etc.).

I assume the battery life will stay the same as the 4S.

Some posts on this forum are really embarrassing. A phone with the smallest screen has the lowest total volume? Wow, that's a real achievement. You may want to check the dimensions of Samsung phones with 3.2" screens. They are probably smaller than that (and, of course, Apple should be embarrassed because of that).

Just shows how outdated current iPhone is - thicker than everything else without having the benefit of the replaceable battery.

Don't worry. There will be iPhone 5 MAXX version. Otherwise the battery will suck (unless Apple once again decided to go without 4G)

You completely missed the point. A next-generation iPhone that increases the screen size while decreasing the volume of the phone is a significant achievement.

Releasing a 4.3-inch phone that's a tank compared to the 4-inch predecessor? That's just releasing a bigger phone without any concern for asthetics or improvement. I realize there are a lot of people that want an enormous, stats-superior iPhone that can out-spec the latest Samsung phone, but that's not innovation. And that's not good for business. That's just inflation.

There are many people who disagree, I'm sure, but I think Apple is doing the right thing, and everyone who keeps clamoring for the most spec-advanced piece of bulky **** should stop whining and go buy an Android phone. I don't want that, and if Apple goes that way I'll find an alternative. Volume is the most important dimension on any phone being released, and Apple is the only manufacturer I have ever seen that cares about the year-to-year comparison on volume. It's laudable, and I will cheer them for it.

Wider makes the phone require 2 hands for many interactions.

Again, Apple has designed the iPhone with 1 hand use with the thumb being able to cover the screen.

I have friends with the Galaxy S's and even a Note...they always are having to use two hands to do everything on them.

Nah, a few mm wider max would not be a problem but would visually be a big improvement in size (especially if done at 3:2 ratio). You would gain from far more easily read text on websites/books and bigger video when horizontal since things like youtube, which lets face it is the most commonly viewed video on a phone are rarely as wide as 16:9 ratio anyway. In-fact most youtube videos on this bigger 16:9 phone will not come out any larger! This is why it seems an odd choice.

It's getting old but here's a quick photoshop mock-up I did with a 4.3" screen - the phone size would not increase dramatically and if they tapered rather than squared the edges it may even be easier to hold and operate.

Everybody's so hung up on a taller display - I'm betting it's wider too - its just that a percentage increase on a small measurement (the width) will be less obvious in images than the impact the same percentage increase would have on a bigger dimension (ie the length). And actually the narrow width of the current screen is more limiting than its length and so I'd welcome an even fractionally wider display. Guess I'd have to grow my thumb if that happened....

Btw, a bit of topic, but since there is much more traffic here. This new wifi+3g feature in beta 4, how is that different från the way it worked before, running on wifi once it has signal and then switching to 3G?

This already work, right? I don't get that.

I think it will work in a that when you're on a wifi network (meaning simply wirelessly connected to the access point) but the network has no/poor Internet connection, it will allow the phone to switch back to 3G instead.

I hope everyone read this post.

People who still think this isn't the new iPhone, IT LEAKS EVERY YEAR. Last year we didn't have a physical part of a tapered iPhone, but we have it for this metal back iPhone.

There is plenty of evidence. Stop expecting something different.

Exactly, sory to say but this is gonna be the new i remote control

what exactly int he iOS UI needs changing? Maybe my S3 came with the "hard to use UI pack" cause being different to be different is just silly. Emails have black backgrounds to be cool? I change the background to white, and the text stays white. I can't change it until i drill down the to specific email. Exchange server won't pull my folders. I ask freinds on Android for advice and they each suggest a different application to TRY and make it work. Some even suggesting a $20 mail app? others have replied "oh it works on my HTC... " Hardly helpful.

The only thing I've enjoyed so far on android is "Talk" on gmail, my notifications is bombarded with useless messages from every single app. The alerts are inconsistent. I keep missing calls cause the phone goes into silent when I push power button cause they put the volume down as mute and place it right across with the power switch so when you press power, your palm pushes down on the volume.

hardware wise, great phone. They just need a bit of polish and maybe try it out a bit more before releasing it.
The S3 isn't necessarily what I would call a good representation of Android… I know that's what we're talking about here but like I said I am not a fan of what most manufacturers do with the Android UI (as of 4.0 stock is the best IMO).

The iOS UI is using some design elements I'd considered dated or cliche, while Android 4.0 has a much more "modern" approach. iOS design patterns often try to mimic real world things (a bookshelf for iBooks, etc - it's all kind of tacky) while with Android 4.0 it's taken a much more minimalist approach (take advantage of the platform you're on and don't try to imitate anything).

The front glass shouldn't go up above the metal rim.
Other than that the design looks good.

Having thought about it - if this design is legit then that screen is probably using the old tech LCD + glass, the new thinner, integrated screen (probably not available at that stage) would most likely sit near flush as the rear glass does and match with the new bevelled antenna.

This would then make the production phone even thinner than suggested in this report, nearer 6mm and potentially the thinnest smartphone out there... Voila! - USP for Apple "Thinnest phone on the market!" "Thin is the new big screen!" etc. Considering the overall design is a little "meh" to say the least it does need something to get people excited.

I'm really pleased the new handset appears to be significantly smaller in total volume. I love dinky but powerful gadgets. They're discreet and elegant, not bulky and bombastic.

The current trend towards more and more massive screens leaves me cold. Sure, they look nice at first glance but you quickly become accustomed to the large screen and stop really appreciating it. The bulkiness of the handset, however, remains.

That isn't to say there's only one way to design a smartphone. Clearly some people will trade the neat, tidy and pocket friendly for the massive screen. That's cool. But, for me, I'll stick with the elegant, powerful little package that is the iPhone.

Those worried about battery life. hopefully apple will be using one of the new lower powered screens giving us the magic 7hrs constant use or 48 hrs between charges we all want.

Im hoping the weight should be significantly reduced by losing the back glass and swapping steel frame for unibody aluminium.

I think it's for when the wifi signal is strong, but the connection doesn't work for some reason (e.g. password required or the router is down). This happens to me a lot - the phone locks on to a wifi network that I can't use (BT Openzone is a common culprit in the UK) and I get no data connection, or I'm on a flaky hotel wifi that sometimes works. Manually switching wifi on/off can be irritating.

How come nobody has weighed the shell and compared it to the shell of the iPhone 4s? I'd love to know what to expect weight wise.

I think it is possible that these pictures and parts are from a controlled leak, everyone is expecting them to be truth and they will be, as they could be for te low cost new iPhone, and Apple could also release another model with more features.
Like I mention before: lytro like camera, different case design, long lasting battery, higher storage capacity, and some new data plans that will make everyone migrate to 4G.
Any rumors about an even faster and lower energy consumption processor?

Why do we have to look to a Korean newspaper when "everybody" have these new enclosures and can just messure for themselves?

No chance. This is the new phone. Apple already use the best batteries so it will require lower voltage screens to make that difference. They are already pissing off case makers with the new charger slot. So that guarantees one new size. NFC and LTE will be built in. Might get a storage bump but with the push to LTE its not really going to be that beneficial going forward.

APPLE dont do "controlled leaks" thats a completely ridiculous concept.
