I don't care about the new hardware, I care about the new software. I expect a bonanza of software stuff like last year with 2.0, the good thing of apple is that they keep up to date even the older iPhones! No (urgent) need to buy the new one! Just give me a jumbo-size 3.0 update full of goodies like Squirrelfish Extreme for Safari and stuff like that
Last year they gave to iphone 2g all the goodies of iPhone 3g (except HW stuff like gps and 3g), for free, that's the way to keep the phones fresh and new (and to make the customer feel he's made a good deal)....please Apple, do the same this year....

Though I'm afraid this year the hardware leap will be huge....so we can't expect full retro-compatibility.....I wonder if on AppStore there will be a "Just for iPhone 2009" section....

Ive had a 3G since launch, been *very* happy with it since, especially since Safari and the Digg apps became more stable (my most used apps).

I'll be interested to see what enhancements there are but I'll be more than happy with my 3G for another 18 months as, currently, it does everything I want from a phone. I couldn't give a monkeys about bluetooth and a better camera, the only hardware change that'd excite me being a 64gb capacity - which is a loooooong way off.

The only minor change I would like is software - a quick, easy way to switch from Edge to 3G on the front screen. Possible on a jailbroken phone, I know, but I've never bothered with that.

He means non crippled bluetooth:p

No he means a Bluetooth implementation that does not drain your battery flat in no time giving the whiners yet another thing to whine about.

Gimme Adv. Bluetooth.

Whaaa! my Adv. Bluetooth drains too fast when I listen to britney spears on my stereo bluetooth headset.

I'd like a dual core iPod Touch with 64gb, GarageBand Lite, and a dock accessory to connect a microphone! I know, wishful thinking.

Maybe

I'm currently running a jailbroken iPhone so I can have tethering, video, and cut/paste. If these are included with the new hardware, I'd buy it and go legit.
One thing people need to realize is MEGAPIXELS DON'T MATTER! I'd rather have a 2 megapixel cameral with an optical zoom and good optics rather than the iPhone camera jacked up to 4 or 5 megapixels. It's about quality, not quantity in a camera phone. If you want a pretty picture, get a camera. Phones are for quick, spur-of-the-moment shots.

My wish list: WiFi syncing when on my home network; open the dock port up for video out of apps and the Snapture external flash; allow turn by turn GPS (tom tom, I have $50 waiting in my pocket and a gig of my iPhone lusting for your software!) copy/paste (obviously. Jailbreak peeps, try Clippy!), Tethering over USB (for battery's sake!), and support for editing iWork and Office docs. My palm Treo circa 2005 had all this why can't you?

ya thats not crippled bluetooth... the current bluethooth can do those things... apple just isnt running it to its full potential

Incredibly wishful thinking. :p

I don't see how this is beneficial. We already know there's going to be a new iPhone this June, this article just says it again?

Is there a bluetooth tech available right now that doesnt murder phone batteries?

I honestly wouldnt know, ive never had to use bluetooth.

I like the "TM" at the end of your "Copy and Paste!™*".... you know how Apple does it differently :p

One more thing:
Front camera, better battery, More Memory (RAM and storage SSD), WiFI Sync and yes before we forget again..... Copy Paste would be great, Thanks! I will will take one of those. My iPhone-G1 is needs an upgrade now.

I notice a sort of shame/fear/??? to jailbreak among US-users...here in Italy (at least in forums) it is considered normal, nearly compulsory....
With JB you get iClippy (handy copy/past with clipboard, perfectly integrated), bluetooth file transfer is a matter of days, cool stuff like Hood and SBSettings, Backgrounder, Insomnia, Quickgold (imagine Quicksilver on yuour iPhone), and so on, plenty of good stuff, I couldn't do without jailbreak...
Of course sometimes jailbroken iPhones are a little less snappier...but it's not all this deal, as long as you don't use them as a trash bin...

So this revision should be significantly different, even more different than the 3G was from the original? The reason I say this - if the original was 1,1 and 3G is 1,2 even a jump of a similar magnitude would be 1,3 right? So by the rumored phone to be 2,1 that would indicate a much more substantial jump?

I literally fell off my chair reading this one.... LOL

Its the fear of voiding the warranty if something were to go wrong.

Bring it on! I'm due to upgrade my soon to be 2 yr old 1st gen.

Ditto!

And I think this is when the market is going to see the true genius of the app store. After a year of loading up on iphone applications, realistically there is no way I am going to switch to a Bold, Android, Pre, Nokia, or whatever. Unless there is an Earth shattering breakthrough unique to some other phone, I'm locked into the iphone universe and will be buying a new iphone every other June or so rather than switch and trash all the software I've invested time & money into. I expect the same is true of almost all iphone users.
