What is with the iPhone Edge? I though that may be gen 1, but there is iPhone, iPhone 3g, and iPhone Edge. Am I missing something?

Nope, just iPhone and iPhone 3G officially. As someone pointed out, the "iPhone" can be called iPhone G1, original iPhone, iPhone edge, etc., while the "iPhone 3G" can be called iPhone G2, new iPhone, plastic iPhone, etc. The new one we are talking about would technically be iPhone G3. very confusing, I know.

Highly unlikely. More likely would be via bluetooth.

What the hell are you talking about? WiFi is many times faster than Bluetooth, not to mention better on battery life (I think), is already set up for a home network in the hypothetical example, and has much better range (you could start syning when you walk in the door, not when and if you are in range for Bluetooth) Have you ever tried sending even ONE song over bluetooth? Let alone syncing 8-16GB worth?

Since everyone is posting their wish lists...
In addition to all the usual hopes like better ARM & graphics chips, copy & paste, video camera, more memory, ichat, third party multitasking, etc., etc. (which I all agree with), one thing I'd really like to see is SDK access to the docking port.

Even if development of the hardware and software is basically done, it seems like it should be a simple, last minute tweak to the SDK to add such a capability. They obviously have to have it for their internal SDK anyway, right?

And just imagine the sort of things that could be done if you could add third party hardware that could work with third party apps...
For instance, a radio and maybe even a TV receiver chip, an IR remote control chip for use with a universal remote control app, a lab instrument interface for use with an iphone version of something like Labview to have a handheld multi-meter & oscilloscope, a digital compass (in case the G3 doesn't have one yet), just to toss a few ideas out there.
All just for the cost to Apple of opening up the SDK a little bit.

AT&T better not give us cr*p about getting one and telling us we can't upgrade without paying a fortune.

They'll probably offer the same upgrade that they offered for people who were upgrading from iphone to iphone 3g. It would be pretty horrible if they put pout a new iphone and told everyone, you have to wait till you are in your upgrade window. There would be alot of people without new iphones. Not a good business model. I bet they'll offer some deal with upgrading as they want everyone to renew their contracts and stay another two years.

Too bad 802.11 g tops out at 54 mbps IF you can get it perfect.

Got my iPhone 3G on iDay2 and I am up for upgrade on 07/12/2009. Before that I was in limbo with AT&T after switching over from T-Hell with no phone so I just got a plan and a SIM card.

I will be in line again on iDay3 waiting for my upgrade :).

I just hope Vodafone doesn't go all monopoly on this in New Zealand. The iPhone 3G, to get it at the "$200" price that Steve Jobs touted, costed, in total, over $5000 in 2 years.

I can pay for a year of my tuition fees with that. University or a phone. Hmm.

So the Iphone apps are/will be far more advanced?

Almost surely. I don't think that you can create a 3d game with CSS, HTML e Javascript, that are the only development tools for Palm Pre. They said they did it in order to find developers more quickly ('cause a lot of developers can deal with web tools).
As for iPhone, we've already seen what eye-candies (and "hand-candies") can be produced with its ObjectiveC SDK....makes everything look old and ugly....(but hey, it's not got MMS and BT  'cause a SMARTPHONE it's not about darn APPLICATIONS, it's about MMS and BT  in a word: windows mobile and symbian lamers, shut up...)

as a quick annoyance have any of you use the app controlpad? it gives you a track pad and keyboard on your iphone to control your computer with

I never bought a 3g iPhone since I only have tmobile. Whenever this new iPhone comes out I'll probably end up switching to att. They really should let people upgrade who bought the iPhone 3g to the next iPhone without paying full phone price.

o you CAN but does a developer want to? No

but then again you have a point, it has MMS and bluetooth

I'm not following you
The "3d game" stuff was just an example...the point is Mojo is web based stuff, iPhone SDK is ObjectiveC stuff....I'm not into developing but AFAIK you can't do the same stuff with those tools....
The MMS/BT thingy was ironic of course, mocking forum lamers who blame (excessively) iphone for not having MMS and BT file transfer...

I'm just stoked that we have SOME evidence at long last that there is going to be a major new version this year...

With the lack of 32GB upgrade and the total silence on any other sorts of rumours, I was starting to worry.

Now we have something to hope for!

I'm sure iPhone 3G owners will be considered just like regular under-contract AT&T customers and the price of the new phone will be $x if you are upgrade-eligible and $x+200 if you're not. Both with 2-year contracts. iPhone 3G owners would have to pay the $x+200.

I found another good article that talks more about iPhone 3.0 and multi-core iPhones.

http://www.macblogz.com/2009/01/08/iphone-firmware-30-and-future-multi-core-iphones/

I put all of these Rumors of the G3 iPhone on a post on my blog

http://abatesblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/iphone-g3-spotted.html

Ok Mr. Alexbates, we know you have a blog as I have seen you post links to it a few times in the last few threads I have read. Ease up a little on the my blog threads. :D:D Just saying :D:D

A multi-core ARM would seem unlikely considering that the new ARM architecture, the "Cortex-A8", doesn't support more than one core (this will change with the Cortex-A9 in 2010). They could use a chip based on a multi-core ARM11 platform similar to Nvidia's "Tegra" series, but I don't see why they wouldn't just use a (single-core) Cortex-A8 which is a significant improvement over ARM11.

Along the same lines, It doesn't make a lot of sense for them to use a multi-core GPU considering that the higher-end (single-core) PowerVR SGX chips are already many times faster than the MBX in the iPhone.

No official annoucement

I went to an ATT store today and found out that last year, when Apple announced the coming of the iPhone 3G, anyone that would buy the 1st gen iPhone would be eligible to trade in your 1st gen for the 2nd gen iPhone. She was clear to state that it was only after Apple made the announcement. She also says that ATT new of this before they announced it to the public and that she, as an ATT employee that knew of the iPhone 3G up coming day view while it was still a mystery to most, says that she hasn't heard of any upcoming new iPhones. How can this be with all the confirmative rumors about the production of the 32G iPhone Chips and the talk about quad-core processors. I understand that they can release a good software update but they are way overdue for a new iPhone. Call it whatever you want but we need a new one. I want one but I don't want to buy one to find out a new one came out 3 months later. I want a 32G with the quad-core feature, which I know will come out since I know of someone that works for the company that produced the quad-core processors for Apple's iPhone. I'm not giving any names but I hear that it has major improvements over the current iPhone 3G processors even if they were to release it as a dual-core instead of a quad-core, the quality is much higher. In conclusion, we all want a new iphone. The pieces are in place but apples has not made any indications that it should be happening before WWDC 2009 which is in June. We can confirm with others all we want but it's up to Apple to release, why haven't they done so yet???? I've been holding to purchase a new iPhone since October of last year!!!!

Give me 1280 by 720 resolution screen
4 core cpu- with one core dedicated to ui and one to system software
keep the overall length and width and thickness, but increase the relative screen size to the edges more- maybe get .25 increase in screen size diagonally
Bluetooth that connects to wireless headphones
faster processor
more storage
better battery
time, recent smss, recent emails, recent missed calls all displayed on the screen even when sleeping
better speaker
CONSOLIDATED EMAIL INBOX LIKE MAC MAIL
Email search
copy and paste
camera in front for ichat with video
camera in back that uses that new tech so there is no lag when you move the camera and look at the viewfinder
better camera in back

And I'll buy! :)
