Apple equipped their most advanced top of the line laptop, the MacBook Pro 17", with just two cores. What makes you guys think they are dying to make the iPhone quad-core by July?

NO FREAKING WAY.

Explain please. It would seem the the ARM Cortex A9 multi-core has been available for license from ARM for over a year:
http://www.newlc.com/en/arm-unveils-cortex-a9-processors-scalable-performance-and-low-power-designs

Granted that the usual ARM chip manufacturers may not plan to have A9 chips until 2010, remember that everyone is assuming Apple bought PA Semi to have their own in-house ARM chip design shop. This year and the anticipated third generation of iphone have seemed for some time like a reasonable place to see an Apple / PA Semi designed ARM chip introduced. Given that Apple has a long time inside relationship with ARM (being one of the founding partners of the current ARM and a major investor) and that they were obviously working with PA Semi well before the purchase, it does not seem unreasonable that Apple could have access to an A9 multi-core finished product well ahead of the rest of the industry.

If Apple does have an advantage getting an A9 chip to market first and if the ARM hype about A9 is even half true and if Apple does a good job taking advantage of all that power with iphone OSX 3.x, then all those 'iphone killers' are probably going to get pretty well killed.

Thanks for the informative post. I too think we could see a PA chip real soon. Who knows?

It would have been better if they showed the whole thing

What the story didn't show was this part:

Moral of the story: don't hold your breath!

I dunno. I mean I'm no expert (obviously :D) but back when that quad-core rumor had just surfaced I remember several members posting about how quad-cores work, or how they thought they worked, as with that many cores it would mean less power consumption to battery life as each core could dessignate itself to different task making it less taxing on the processor itself no?

I've also seen it posted many times about how folks tend to believe the new MBP battery tech could be used in an upcoming iPhone model.

Of course, all speculation from us forum'ers but ya know, it doesn't seem entirely unlikely if ya ask me.

Now where's all those quad-core know it all's to give us a history lesson when you need one? :D kdarling?

Give me 1280 by 720 resolution screen
4 core cpu- with one core dedicated to ui and one to system software
keep the overall length and width and thickness, but increase the relative screen size to the edges more- maybe get .25 increase in screen size diagonally
Bluetooth that connects to wireless headphones
faster processor
more storage
better battery
time, recent smss, recent emails, recent missed calls all displayed on the screen even when sleeping
better speaker
CONSOLIDATED EMAIL INBOX LIKE MAC MAIL
Email search
copy and paste
camera in front for ichat with video
camera in back that uses that new tech so there is no lag when you move the camera and look at the viewfinder
better camera in back

And I'll buy! :)

Sold!!

I'll buy anyway but this would be awesome!!!

I don't care if the only update is an extra internal piece of plastic (that we cannot even see)... if they call it new, I AM GETTING ONE! I am addicted to everything Apple does. If they add a tiny piece of internal plastic, and call if iPhone 3Gp, I am buying one.

Ah, the customer base that Apple rely and focus on.

Of course iphone 2,1 might not be an iphone like what is currently shipped at all, with the next version of the actual iphone being 1,3.

It could be something else altogether that uses the iphone chipset, like a small, laptop style machine. What do they call those things?

I too am supporting Apple's use of a dual core A9 Cortex based chip. A dual core iPhone seems like the next logical step coupled with a PowerVR SGX chip with OpenCL and Grand Central support. Probably 16GB and 32GB sizes with 256MB of RAM. Maybe dedicated VRAM for the SGX. I'm hoping for 802.11n support too. They'll probably also enable video recording support. I'm betting they'd keep the current 8GB iPhone 3G model on as a low cost model though at $149, and keep the current $199 and $299 price points for any new models. It doesn't seem like Apple would go for a major hardware overhaul and lower prices on the new models.

My concern with the dual core A9 Cortex though is that I haven't really heard anything concrete about power consumption relative to current generation ARM parts and I was still getting the impression that the A9 and especially the MPCore multicore designs were targeted for larger devices like MIDs and tablets more to nip at Intel's Atom than at cell phones which have greater battery constraints.

EDIT: For interest, Palm's Pre looks to use a ARM A8 with unknown clock speed. This'll be quite a bit faster than the current iPhone's processor. So Apple will have to go with a higher clocked ARM A8 or to an A9 to stay in the lead.

i was thinking the same :)

Similarly, the iPod Touch was originally introduced as the "iPod 1,1" and the most recent hardware revision was labeled "iPod2,1". The 2,1 iPod Touch added a speaker, volume controls, microphone support and a ... faster processor than the 1st generation model.

So that implies that a 2,1 iPhone will at least add volume controls and faster processor (the iPod Touch upgrade was only around 20% faster). Maybe one more added or upgraded feature, and that's all. It's problematical for even the top-notch PA Semi team to get a new chip architecture ramped up into high volume production in only 1 year, so I'm not counting on more visible processor cores (there are already several user-invisible CPU cores in the current iPhone) until maybe 2010.

But more RAM than 128MB would be a nice upgrade.

For me personally, a next gen 32GB iPhone in June would be brilliant as far as timing goes. My area will probably just be getting 3G then, and my 1st gen Phone will be ready to be replaced.

Hopefully Apple will keep true to form and keep the pricing scheme the same as it is now.

This is the rumour I have been waiting for, my BlackBerry contract is up for renewal July 2nd and the current iPhone was making me thinking about switching, assuming the new iPhone is better still then apple here I come :)

...

Please stop saying things like "i'll buy it anyway!"

Why should apple change their attitude towards consumers requests and wishes when the majority does not even bother to think about NOT buying one of their products, especially iPhone-wise...?

c'mon folks... apple products are a lifestyle, atleast some people say so and i can see their point, ....but (i hope) you do not buy marlboro cigarettes for the cowboy-lifestyle communicated in their adds, do you? *crossing-fingers*

Honestly it's the lifestyle aspect of Apple that keeps me from buying their products in mass. I don't want their culture forced on me and I don't want assumptions about my lifestyle being made just because I'm seen with a Macbook. When Jobs leaves, and he WILL leave, Apple will start to gobble up even more market share because they will shift twords an even more mainstream company that doesn't focus on the LA cofee shop crowd image but instead appeals to the business IBM'er and personal computer user.

iTunes Sync via Wi-Fi?

That can be done to both existing iPhone models as well as both iPod touch models through a simple firmware update (because they already have integrated Wi Fi). No need for entirely new hardware.

I am all for a new iPhone. Maybe with a better camera, more storage, and some new colors. The only downside is that I would probably be unable to keep myself from buying the new one haha.

well,.... if you follow this rule strictly you will have problems with nearly everything you buy or possess, because humans think in patterns/are influenced by friends/and more.., therefor anything you do(buy) or even don't(buy) seems to be a clue about your personality...

personally, i think you should not care about other peoples opinions, especially if they are based on what type of computer/cellphone/jeans (tbc.)
you use... of course there are plenty of consumers (!) who think it is trendy to own an iphone... but if that is the reason for you not getting one, although you'd love to, maybe you should reconsider the reason for anything you have done.... ;)

stand up against stupid prejudices ;)
