I think the iPhone 3,3 may be CDMA for China....WiFi removed.

1) They sold the 3GS there with WiFi removed from the firmware and OS already and it didn’t require a different HW model designation.

2) The law requiring phones not to have WiFi was redacted last year.

That doesn’t seem likely or make much sense. The CDMA model can be used with other CDMA carriers and the GSM model only needs the AWS band for T-Mobile USA. On top of that, if they were going to do a World MOde phone why didn’t they? The most likely candidate seems like a GSM/TD-SCDMA model for China Mobile’s 580,000,000 subscribers. It’s the only thing that fits unless this is going to be a different sized iPhone 4.

I laughed at the subscriber count for China Mobile...then I stopped for a second and realized that is actually how many subscribers they have.

Half a BILLION customers. Wow.

9to5Mac was just reporting that the images found inside iOS for iPad show a 1024x768 camera shutter image. Why would they need that if the new iPad has a higher resolution display?

For me, the same resolution display is a no-buy on iPad 2. And as I've said all along, even doubling the resolution of the iPad to get it in the ballpark of Retina from a further holding distance still would require quite a bit of processing power and battery life. It probably isn't feasible until next year.

In the meantime, a retina display (from two feet away) Macbook Pro would be nice Apple!

iPhone 5 Verizon, next Feb.

You can be sure by getting a job at Apple.

Otherwise, you're guessing, just like the rest of us.

I just would like some degree of certainty before spending money and more to the point, getting locked into a 2yr contract. Then again, the iPhone 4 is a great phone and updates to the next iPhone will probably be incremental (I hope). I just wish I had the same level of certainty that AT&T customers that bought the iPhone 4 last summer had about how long it would take for their iPhone to be replaced.

Good points, I was unaware of this. Thanks.

Do you think we'll get one for both carriers in June/July?

So an HSPA+ 4G model for AT&T and an LTE/CDMA 4G model for Verizon.

lol no. maybe att "4g" which isnt even their lte 4g. and no vz 4g since their lte network is small and i doubt apple will go lte till 2012.

I doubt we will see an LTE/CDMA model this summer. Apple does not build phones with brand-new cellular technology. Heck, they didn't even put an SV-DO chip (for simultaneous voice and data) into the CDMA phone. Qualcomm is still waiting for a handset manufacturer to order them.

The first-generation LTE chips will probably have some compromises in performance and battery life. It is likely that Apple will wait for the second-gen LTE chips before adding it to a handset.

I don't think that Apple is capable of turning around another CDMA iPhone that quickly, plus it would be more profitable to extend the sales of CDMA iPhone 4 due to volume discounting on components (specifically the CDMA-related parts). I'm guessing that Apple will skip the iPhone 5 for CDMA or possibly release it several months later.

A more unified iPhone release would come with the iPhone 6 in 2012.

iPhone 3,3 = iPhone 4S with HSPA+ for AT&T to be released this June
iPhone 4,1 = iPhone 5 with GSM/LTE for AT&T in 2012
iPhone 4,2 = iPhone 5 with CDMA/LTE for Verizon in 2012

maybe in 2013 apple will create one single model that supports GSM/CDMA/LTE.

The 2012 handsets are eighteen months away. They're not going to refer to an ID for something they're not shipping for a year and a half.

The iPhone4,x IDs are for this summer's iPhone. Remember, we're talking about Apple.

iPhone 4,2 = iPhone 5 with CDMA/LTE for Verizon in 2012

This would be my best bet.

That sounds very logical. Unless, iPhone 3,3 is for T-Mobile. I'm hoping you're right because I can take AT&T customers getting an incremental update much better than Verizon getting a significant update five months after I pick up my iPhone.

Here's my 2 cents

Those leaked iPhone 5 metal cases will be the updated antenna design for the AT&T iPhone 5 due in June at the WWDC. I say that because those images show a sim-card slot. So basically, I think we are gonna have another 3GS type release in June.....faster processor, few new features, and that new antenna design.

In no possible way do I see a iPhone 5 for Verizon four months after they released the iPhone 4....doesn't make sense.

But, in June 2012, I see Apple getting back on the refresh track and offering a LTE phone for both AT&T and Verizon.

Thoughts?

I laughed at the subscriber count for China Mobile...then I stopped for a second and realized that is actually how many subscribers they have.

Half a BILLION customers. Wow.

It seems absurd.

I think AT&T is 18% iPhone users. If we append that percentage to the iPhone on Verizon — which may be high because of the better selection of Android phones and because the iPhone on AT&T does offer faster speeds and simultaneous voice and data — that means 16.8 million users will be on the iPhone.
93.2 x 0.18 = 16.8
92.8 x 0.18 = 16.7

Now we can’t expect China Mobile to have a subscriber percentage that high. While China’s middle class is growing and there are plenty with money for modern smartphones and data plans it’s just not high enough to match the US average.

But if we append the 16.8 million number to China Mobile you only need 2.9% to be using the iPhone to match the units sales of the CMDA iPhone on Verizon.
16.9 ÷ 580 = 0.029 = 2.9%

Of course, these are today’s numbers and Verizon is likely to increase their numbers China Mobile increases by about ≈5 million each month, and it’ll take time for the iPhone to reach a saturation point as contracts end so they can buy the new iPhone.

There are plenty of other factors to consider but the bottom line is there this is a pretty target for Apple from a company that has expressed interest the iPhone. I can’t why any other iPhone 4 model would be for.

Apple doesn’t put these references in iOS that far in advance and they aren’t going to put references in for a phone for 2012 and ignore 2011, or use the same reference model for year-over-year releases unless we assume they aren’t going to move to Cortex-A9 or have an updated A4 until 2012. All that seems very unlikely.

iPhone 3,3 = Some iPhone 4 variant.
iPhone 4,1 and 4,2 = iPhone 5 due out in 2011.

LTE is not likely until 2012. I don’t think any small and thin smartphone even showcased LTE at CES last week.

There are chips that support all major GSM/CDMA/UMTS bands, but no chips that supports all for a true “world mode” device. Qualcomm just announced a new chip for a reference model phone that is about the size of the current iPhone, but the exact specs are unknown, but it does support GSM/CDMA/UMTS on some level. Likely 4 GSM bands, 2 CDMA/EVDO bands, and at least 1 UMTS bands, hopefully 5.

it takes a long time to put all the pieces for one of these phones together, especially if supporting the new LTE networks.

So you expect no new iPhones this summer? Unlike the last 4 years? I got $5 4,1 is released this summer and most likely 4,2. They aren't just gonna go a year and then just release a 3,3 for HSPA+

So much for a mixed-mode (CDMA + GSM) phone (or iPad, for that matter) :(

x2

SKUs gone wild.

I don't think any of these numbers point to 2012 models, unless it's a Verizon phone known to roll out early 2012...but still doubtful.

But I have a question (cuz I'm too lazy to look it up)...did the 3G to the 3Gs get a major revision bump or just a minor?

What happens if the Verizon iPhone 4S/5 is not released? Wait another 5 months? Yeah, I know, when it comes to tech you just have to buy and take your chances. Unless you want to wait forever.

I'm with this guy. I've waiting long enough. Say iPhone 5 comes out for Verizon this summer. I'll just sell iPhone 4 and pick up 5 at full price with the money made from selling 4.

I've waited long enough for this phone. There is no more waiting. I've got an LG Chocolate in my pocket for christ sake.
