For me, the same resolution display is a no-buy on iPad 2. And as I've said all along, even doubling the resolution of the iPad to get it in the ballpark of Retina from a further holding distance still would require quite a bit of processing power and battery life. It probably isn't feasible until next year.
I really don't understand the obsession with "retina" display on the iPad.
The current display is perfectly adequate. What does it matter what it looks like if can do the tasks it needs to do? The only real advantage I can see is that it may make web browsing & iBook reading, etc. slightly more comfortable.

So you expect no new iPhones this summer? Unlike the last 4 years? I got $5 4,1 is released this summer and most likely 4,2. They aren't just gonna go a year and then just release a 3,3 for HSPA+

i mentioned the iPhone 3,3 as an HSPA+ iPhone 4 model to be released this June (aka Summer 2011). Apple would not miss a release this summer, but that does not mean this summer's iPhone will be the iPhone 5. it is much more likely to only see a release for AT&T this summer making an HSPA+ model available and not releasing a new Verizon model until Summer 2012 when Apple can sync the AT&T and Verizon release cycles. Releasing a new iPhone for Verizon this summer (2011) would create a lot of ill will.

I'm guessing the iPad numbers represent the Wi-Fi only iPad along with Wi-Fi with 3G including GSM and CDMA. The next gen iPhone number represent the GSM and CDMA models of the next iPhone. iPad will probably be revealed in March while the iPhone will be revealed at WWDC.

I'm with this guy. I've waiting long enough. Say iPhone 5 comes out for Verizon this summer. I'll just sell iPhone 4 and pick up 5 at full price with the money made from selling 4.

I've waited long enough for this phone. There is no more waiting. I've got an LG Chocolate in my pocket for christ sake.

lol. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. That was funny. Something tells me that your Chocolate has more power than my Droid Eris did. haha

It's not just about AT&T and Verizon. It's about the entire world's cellular technology.

Correct. This article was very US centric. The “AT&T” iPhone happens to be used by the rest of the world and the “Verizon” iPhone could open up new international markets for Apple.

Good points, I was unaware of this. Thanks.

Do you think we'll get one for both carriers in June/July?

So an HSPA+ 4G model for AT&T and an LTE/CDMA 4G model for Verizon.

Not sure, I'd hope they wouldn't just leave out Verizon with older models. As for it being on the 4G network, I'm not sure, I just heard that it'll be labeled that.

lol no. maybe att "4g" which isnt even their lte 4g. and no vz 4g since their lte network is small and i doubt apple will go lte till 2012.

I think it has to do more with the phone's name than the actual network it'll be on. I'm not sure if it'll be a 4G phone, just the name will be iPhone 4G.

So the big question for potential Verizon iPhone customers is how long until iPhone3,2 is replaced by iPhone4,2? 5 months? Some People say Apple won't release the two versions at the same time. How can we be sure?

They kinda have to release them at the "Same Time" now. But it wouldn't surprise me if they released the AT&T one in retail one week then a week or two later they released the Verizon one just to lighten the amount of traffic in the stores and on there systems.

Stop being so short-sighted by calling it AT&T iPhone 4 and call it by what it really is, UMTS iPhone 4.

I mean really? another carrier was just announced this week and already we're speculating on t mobile and Sprint? hasn't it been reported that Verizon requested exclusivity as far as new US carriers?

Tim Cook said a multi-year non-exclusive contract.

I never would have guessed!

Holy Crap! So you're saying Apple is still developing their technology?!?! I never would have expected THAT!

But really, I'm excited for the new iPad since I have been waiting for the model with the camera.

Also IMO if you have iPhone 3GS, why not hold out on iPhone until 4G network capability comes around; not worth the upgrade yet from the 3GS at this point - which may be another 6 months to a year but so be it...

Major model numbers tied to CPU?

Looking back at historical iPhone and iPod touch model numbers, whenever a new CPU is introduced, the major model number gets bumped. The only exception is that iPod3,1 included one model with the last-gen CPU.

I am guessing there are no hard and fast rules for these model numbers. I cannot find anything that is absolutely consistent between models with the same number and different between other model numbers. It could be more related to the other hardware in use, and it is simply a grouping of necessary drivers. Anyway, it is all speculation at this point.

While we're speculating, I expect to see the following:
  • iPhone4,1 released this summer for GSM
  • iPhone4,2 released this fall for CDMA
  • iPhone4,x only changing CPU, antenna, and maybe camera
  • iPhone4,x will not be called iPhone 5
  • New, unified releases for all types starting in Q1 or Q2 2012 (less likely)

I think it benefits pretty much everyone but the consumer to have staggered releases, so we'll see what happens there.

I would not count on seeing a resolution bump in the iPad any time soon. The bump to the retina display in the small-format iOS devices was trivial because the resolution is simply double the old resolution in both dimensions. Scaling to something not double would most likely require completely changing development tools to add a new size. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I do not see it happening this year. Also, Apple has already bought a ton of displays at the current size and resolution. The only things I would hope for in the iPad 2, beyond cameras, would be better battery life and/or a faster CPU. I would also anticipate that the CPU in the iPad 2 will be the same as the CPU in the next iPhone refresh.

I personally am holding out some hope that T-Mobile and Sprint will get the iPhone in the US within the next few months. As it has been said before, no changes to hardware would be required for Sprint. There would still need to be some possible software changes, so it is not necessarily a no-brainer, but I would expect to see it eventually. As for an AWS band iPhone, I do not think it is impossible. There are carriers besides T-Mobile US using AWS, so the market may not be ignored. I hope that is what iPhone3,3 is, but there is no specific reason to think that.

What surprises me the most is how no one is commenting on plan pricing. First, we do not really know anything about Verizon's iPhone plan pricing. If it is the same as their other smartphone plans, they are then typically $5/more per month than AT&T. That's a reasonable price if you think AT&T is reasonable. Compared to Sprint and T-Mobile's pricing, though, it's absolutely outrageous. Some might disagree, but first, know that they are making a huge profit, and second, know that their network and service is not 15-50% better than Sprint's or T-Mobile's (their marketing clearly is, though). Furthermore, I would not be surprised if Verizon tacks on an additional $3-5/month iPhone surcharge. Ostensibly, it would be for visual voicemail and "increased use" or some other nonsense.

My vote

iphone 3,3 = TMobile iPhone4 (released sometime after Verizon hoopla dies down)
iphone 4,1 = GSM iPhone4S (supports TMobile)
iphone 4,2 = CDMA iPhone4S
(iphone 5,1) = iPhone 5 (4G/LTE, supports all US carriers)

I'm betting that the next iPhone is a 4S (and not 5) as it moves to >1GHz dual-core Cortex A9 processors (likely with 1GB RAM); otherwise same form-factor. This allows the iPhone 4S to keep up speed-wise with the latest Android phones (and likely, the iPad2), minimizes buyer's remorse from Verizon early-adopters in June, and distracts the masses while real 4G gets rolled out. A year later, we get the iPhone 5 (or maybe "4G") that supports real 4G in a new form factor.

This is very similar to what the iPhone has done so far: 2G [iPhone] -> 3G [3G, natch]-> processor bump [3GS] -> form factor (with slightly faster processor) [4].

ok well ipad is obviously going to be wifi, 3g, and cdma. This crushes all those there will be a 7" model rumors. Its probably not going to to released until after this software is released so around March according to one report unless Apple has done so much testing with it that it only requires one or two more betas. And looking on the homepage it now says April.

But for the iPhones someone needs to open up and check the iOS 4.2 software. Does that have mention of 3,2 or 3,3. 3,2 can most likely be the CDMA and maybe 3,3 is a new and silent revised upcoming ATT version. Notice how 4,x doesnt have a 4,3 so it cant be on another carrier

Look in other threads, particularly ones that focus on mobile operators. You will see lots of discussion about plan pricing there.

This is a thread about an iOS update to Apple hardware. It has nothing little to do with cellular carriers, whomever they be across the globe.

Read for context, pay attention to the subject matter at hand. Remember, there are plenty of people who are eager to discuss pricing. This is simply the wrong forum thread to attempt it.

I don't know. Based on Tim Cook's statements at the media event, he seemed to stress the point that they wanted to get the VZ iPhone out right now (even if it means they might replace it with a new model very soon). The language he used seem to emphasize that customers waiting for a Verizon iPhone would be willing to make some sacrifices (no LTE, no simultaneous voice/data, etc). Plus, Apple has paid no particular attention to the happiness of its early adopters (ex. drastically dropping the price of the iPhone 2g just a couple months after launch.)
