I mean really? another carrier was just announced this week and already we're speculating on t mobile and Sprint? hasn't it been reported that Verizon requested exclusivity as far as new US carriers?

Well, we have to make some sort of guess as to what the 3,3 phone will be. :)

Nah it was rumored before the announcement but then Tim Cook squashed that rumor.

Those rumors weren't even as strong as rumors for Verizon back in 2008. ;)

Looking back at historical iPhone and iPod touch model numbers, whenever a new CPU is introduced, the major model number gets bumped. The only exception is that iPod3,1 included one model with the last-gen CPU.

I am guessing there are no hard and fast rules for these model numbers.

My theory is that the major version number is attributed to any hardware change that would require a different path in the code. In other words, turning on/off features that relied on a certain speed of processor or amount of memory...such as multitasking.

So yes, it would be a hardware change of some sort, perhaps CPU or memory or some other significant bump. Which brings us back to the 4G or 4S or 4Gs?

Look in other threads, particularly ones that focus on mobile operators. You will see lots of discussion about plan pricing there.

This is a thread about an iOS update to Apple hardware. It has nothing little to do with cellular carriers, whomever they be across the globe.

Read for context, pay attention to the subject matter at hand. Remember, there are plenty of people who are eager to discuss pricing. This is simply the wrong forum thread to attempt it.

You are correct that this is not the right thread for pricing. That said, my comment was more about media/blog coverage than what people are discussing in forums. Still, I will look elsewhere to gripe about that.

The numbering keeps my hopes alive for a new SoC. 3G was the only one to not update the SoC (just add 3G radio and GPS), and it got a comma rather than a full model number.

Hopefully we're looking at at least a single core A9.

pretty sure we saw the iphone 4 # jan 2009. this would be the same for the 2012 iphone.

Do you think you could find a link showing that that's true? I'd be really interested to see if the iPhone 4,x could possibly be that far in the future.

Here's my 2 cents

Those leaked iPhone 5 metal cases will be the updated antenna design for the AT&T iPhone 5 due in June at the WWDC. I say that because those images show a sim-card slot. So basically, I think we are gonna have another 3GS type release in June.....faster processor, few new features, and that new antenna design.

In no possible way do I see a iPhone 5 for Verizon four months after they released the iPhone 4....doesn't make sense.

But, in June 2012, I see Apple getting back on the refresh track and offering a LTE phone for both AT&T and Verizon.

Thoughts?

Agreed. :)

cool. 3.3 is the real news here. the didnt just redesign the antenna for the cdma version, but also for the gsm version, just like i predicted.

people her still seem rather clueless if they think those leaked images were the iphone 5. 1+1+1=...?

There's no evidence to support this. It could be the rumored international CDMA version for all we know. It could also be the iPhone 4 for when the iPhone 5 comes out. Just like they produced a new model of the 3GS with 8GB of NAND for iPhone 4 launch.

That's an extreme leap in logic. More likely it is for a Chinese CDMA version that requires an R/UIM slot. We also know that Foxconn manufactured the US version of the CDMA iPhone and Pegatron manufactured the ones for other parts of the world. This would make sense if there was a design difference such as the need for an R/UIM slot.

lol. Sorry, I couldn't help myself. That was funny. Something tells me that your Chocolate has more power than my Droid Eris did. haha

I've been using my Chocolate as a beer bottle opener to give it more features than text and call. So yeah, its pretty powerful!

I will miss T9 (Word) come Feb 10. It was a good run.

off topic-

But i cant belive its been almost a year since iphone 4 came out! I litteraly remember it comeing out like yesterday!

Don't know if this has already been posted but I was thinking that the iPhone 3,3 is probably just a GSM variant of the iPhone 4 with the updated antenna (possibly in 8 GB to continue the trend of making the previous generation a more cost efficient device).

I would think iPhone 4,1 and 4,2 are both iPhone 5's (GSM/CDMA).

Also have been told that Verizon already has plans to launch the iPhone 5 this summer and sales reps are already aware of this information as it was included in their documentation regarding the iPhone 4's release. Whether this will be an incremental upgrade like the 3GS, I do not know. Just wanted to share.

So they don’t change the antenna for the year it’s out and has been a huge success, but change it when it’s about to be replaced with the iPhone 5? :\

How about the other markets that use different phone HW. Like the CDMA in Asia that requires a SIM or the GSM/TD-SCDMA of China Mobile with their 580 million subscribers?

Completely possible as well. Assuming that the 3,3 is announced at WWDC, I can't imagine that Apple would launch the iPhone 4 in any variant besides one at the $99 price point at that time.

If this is a new iPhone 4 that is to be launched sooner than WWDC, I would assume that we'd also see an iPhone 5 with these bands on it and there's no Iphone 4,3 showing up, not yet at least.

However if they follow suit and downgrade the storage on the Iphone 4 to 8GB, I could imagine they may want to manufacture those iPhone 4's with the new antenna.

Just speculating...
