iZume !?!

Well I think that this in an incredibly stupid idea but it is possible. While :apple: is usually very creative, they are not omnipotent and they are perfectly capable to do something this dumb.

It's going to be an touch interface with a few real buttons for those of us who use it to exercise with. It will be a much more simplified interface than the iphone. Here's a mockup.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for quite some time. I suspect that the comments about large libraries are coming from the contingent of 10-13 year olds who frequent these boards and who don't have a clue about anything; i.e. as you get older and more mature (we hope!), your musical tastes tend to change, thus growing media libraries. Speaking only for myself, I find that I go through phases throughout the year in terms of my musical tastes. For example, right now I'm in Big Band music phase, so I've been buying some new stuff to listen to. And thus, my library grows bigger & I need more storage space for it. What a concept!

I don't think anyone's forgetting you. But the solution for you is not going to be a nano, the iPod with which this thread is concerned.

I hope not..there are situations when a touch screen is just not working right. Sometimes you just can't look on the screen and change the tracks or don't have two hands free. When I am biking I love to handle my Nano just with one hand with almost not looking on the screen. And when I am running, then I also have to concentrate on the road and I don't really want to use all my two hands and my eyes to change a song...
For me it's sometimes handy to actually have a click wheel.

I agree totally. I rarely use my iPod Touch for "activities" such as going to the gym, etc. It is just not very handy, whereas my 1G nano is very convenient, light and easy to use without even looking at it.

I do like the "long" nano shown in the original story/photo. Before they brought out the Fat-nano, I believed that this long format was going to come out.

Why do so many people believe (or, for that matter, want) the new nano to sport a touch screen? Thats an awefully small touch screen!

I agree. Also, Apple needs to keep the cost of the Nano down around $100 or so. I kind of doubt that they can do that, offering touch interface, especially without cannibalizing iPod Touch sales.

I have a feeling that we will only see minor upgrades this year... We usually see major ones every 2 years, and last year was a major one.

I'm think maybe a little bit taller and a little bit narrower...but def. not zune-like. I like the current nano as it is. I would add a full aluminum body and a color refresh.

I've always thought the narrow nano fit the hand better and that 2" is too small for video anyway.

Tactile feedback is great: you don't have to look to use the controls. I hope the click wheel is here to stay.

I either want something that holds enough music to last a single battery charge (Shuffle does that fine) or something that holds all my music so the current nano isn't appealing.

I don't have a Classic because I used to work in Apple retail and saw too many iPods with dead hard drives. When there's a flash based iPod with the capacity of today's Classic I'll buy it.

This mock-up wouldn't make any sense. The click wheel will be confusing to some when you rotate it to the left or right. The Prev/Next button would be vertical as supposed to horizontal and the Menu and Play/Pause button would be horizontal as supposed to vertical.

And.... you have two play/pause buttons and two sets of previous/next buttons...

Not that anyone will agree, but they need to bring back the mini form factor. Throw in some flash instead of a hard drive, color screen, etc.

Whatever, anything is better then the 3G.

I don't understand why people want touch sensitive iPod nano. I mean, the purpose of flash is battery life and no-spinning HDD, so you're free to go snowboarding and other active sports without the risk of ruining your hdd in the long run. The click wheel is convenient in this case because you're not focusing on controlling the ipod, you're focused more on carving snow or maintaining your heart rate at a high pace. You want to just click skip or turn it up by moving into a circle quickly, which is convenient with a click-wheel because you can feel the difference between touching the screen or the controller (click-wheel). With an iPod touch/iPhone, you can't just simply press skip/pause without having to take it out and stare at your screen, making sure you're clicking the right button (you can't distinguish the pause button without making sure; it's not second nature). Try controlling the volume on your touch screen nano when the song that just began playing happened to be ripped at a much higher bitrate than the previous song (128 vs loseless) like the difference between melodic tunes to thrash/heavy metal.

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a clickwheel with different signs popping up (like some cellphones going from phone to mp3 mode), changing the play/pause/skip/menu button accordingly with the orientation of the screen (via accelerometer).

How about the click wheel is a touch-sensitive screen? When you turn the iPod, the controls turn also.

My friend got a phone that uses this. Here is a picture. That way, the controls on the click wheel will be dynamic, changing depending on what menu you're on, and more importantly, how you're holding the iPod.

My thoughts...

Hey guys, here are a couple of my thoughts.

1. Apple will not phase out the click wheel, it is extremely easy to use.

2. I like the idea of a taller nano, the current one is to difficult to hold in hand.

3. A taller one with the "soft" edges, unlike the 2G.

4. Aluminum backing like on the 2G. The 2G was a beast in durability.

5. Larger screen. This is ALMOST guaranteed.

Can people not see that the whole line will be touch screen, and look similar?

iPod Classic will become iPod Touch, with current Hdd
iPod Touch will merge with iPod Nano, and there will be a current iPod Touch Size, and a smaller more Nano size.

Im thinking iPod Video will come back, as the touch screen Hdd based Classic.
iPod touch will stay the same, maybe be just the iPod now?
iPod Nano will be a smaller iPod Touch.

I like your way of thinking. That may just be the case,

Clickwheel: If you use the Nano for sports and training, you will want a physical clickwheel that you can adjust without having to look at it. Touch interfaces are cool, but they don't work for me when I'm going 40 mph downhill on a bicycle.

Are you sure its really that safe to be listening to an ipod while on a bike? You have to hear traffic and if a ambiance, fieetruck or police car is driving by

The earphones Apple gives you hurt SO bad! :)

You dont have to use the apple ones you know ;)

Stupid and ugly design. When did video suddenly become so important for the iPod nano??

It's used 99.9% as music player by anyone who owns it.

Why do they need to market everything to same customers? Right now, the iPod touch is essentially the worst buy you could possibly make.

Terrible, terrible business models.

People wanted video on the nano, so thats why they added it.... simple as that

Seriously.....what? Elimination of cover flow? Yes its useless but the paragraph before you were just raving about how Apple doesn't take steps backward

200 gb??? It is already offered at 160 gb. Thats like complaining about a 200 million dollar lottery win that you only actually got 160 million out of.

If you need more than 160 gig of anything on an iPod at any given time....then you need help. Period.

Why would he need help? He likes music. He has a large collection. Most might have taken him 10-20 years to get. Just because you may only have 20 or so songs doesnt mean everyone does.

Wow thats polite.

Anyone else can't stand people who do this in social situations? (prolly on the wrong site for that question).

You call siting in a restrunt lobby a social situation. come on, not everyone goes up to people and talk.. you from the UK? sound like it

It never ceases to amaze me how many people like you on these boards absolutely rail against those of us who have HUGE music collections or WANT huge HDD portable devices so that we can rip to lossless formats & still carry our ENTIRE music collection with us. It's not your place to judge how/why people use their iPods. Period. Thank gawd Apple doesn't subscribe to your way of thinking. You sound like the nimrods who told us that we'd never need more than 200MBs of computer storage too...how'd that logic work out? But the bottom line is this: why do you CARE about how much storage space somebody else wants/needs? Get a life!

I agree 110%. a lot of people have music from CDs that gotten in the past 10-20 years so they decided to transfer it over to their computer, change the file up so it will be "digital like" and place it on their ipod. Plus a lot of people have video, audio podcasts, video podcasts pictures and more. Its not up to some friendless guy who never gotten laied to make our decesions. If someone has over 200GB worth of music, it doesnt mean they are the ones that need help. They could be rich or very popluar and throw partys with the music....

I really hate it when people tell me what i need and what I dont need.

Yeah great idea....then they can add 50.00 to the price point? whats the point?

Point is, its 2008 time to get with the times and those LED light up controls.

you really don't. You need playlists

Not everyone, including my self wants to shuffle my music around. some want it with them at all times...

Ah yes, but do you really NEED all of that media at your finger tips at all times?

you really dont NEED an ipod now do you?

I'm not flaming or picking... just asking because I feel the same way as you do at times but then ask myself the question and I always answer back to myself "no I don't NEED everything all the time."

With me, I like to have everything with me. I may be in the mood for a certin song but I find out when I'm on the other side of the state that "oh s*** I forgot that song and I didnt bring my lappy" If you have a large HD why not use it :)

If I know I am going to be going somewhere away from my computer for a while I will load up what I think I will need on my iPhone for that trip. BTW, it's the original 4 GB iPhone. I don't NEED all of my music, I have created 2 playlists that sync up. I don't NEED all of my movies/TV Shows, so I sync one or two depending on sizes. The one thing that I feel I DO need are my photos. I can't tell you how many times I've been talking to someone and pulled out the iPhone to show them a pic from like 4 years ago.

Thats the problem. some of us dont want to think what we will be felling like few hours or days from now. Just add a search featurte and you can find all your songs

I've found that 4GBs is just enough for my needs. Would I LIKE an 8GB or 16GB model? Hell yes! Do I NEED a 16GB iPhone, no, but I am hedging on NEEDING an 8GB iPhone in the next revision though.

you say you dont need anysize larger then 4G. it fits fine but you want more? doesnt make sence.

No!
I will go crazy if I have to decide between what to put on and what not to.
I like having as much music and videos with me as possible.
I need a 250GB Classic.
I don't mind if they stop there, I will be happy.

Theres someone with the attatude i like. great job :D

People like you need to stop dictating to people like me what I need and how I should use it. What is it that you people don't get about people with large music/video collections wanting to carry their ENTIRE collection with them ALL THE TIME???? I travel for my job ALOT and do not have the time nor desire to decide in advance what I might want to listen to or watch (i.e. playlists) every time I'm away from home. That's the WHOLE POINT of a large HDD device. Why can't you understand that? And why does it bother you that people do have large media collections? Why do you even care?

amen, amen

Do you EVER see people on these boards/forums who have large media librariers castigating those who have an iPod shuffle or an 8GB nano/touch? I defy you to do a search and find that that is a common occurrence. Yet, those of us who have large media libraries are always berated for it. Enough already...get over it. It is what it is. Live your life the way you choose to & leave others alone to do the same.

they are just scared they cant find all their songs. Just add a search feature in. there, you can find your songs and you can all stop cring.

Finally someone has said something.
It seems that people like us are being forgotten about and pushed off to the side when it comes to talk about the capacity of future iPods.
Thank you! ^_^

Agreed... thanks

thats what it is. or its just some looner whith no friends and no girlfriend and is looking to make friends in the worng way.(starting fights and fake friends AKA online ones)

are you serious? I was talking about nanos. How did this conversation veer off into the HDD based iPods?

It's people like me who at least try to stay on topic.

You try, doesnt mean you alwways do. You did come up with why do people need all this much storage. its just an general statement. Your post right here tells us that you arnt "tring" to stay on topic ;)

Actually, someone said they'd rather see a 200GB iPod (which would obviously be HDD) then I think I said something to a reply someone did to that, then you started to carry on the conversation and name reasons why we don't need a 200GB iPod.

I may be wrong but I think that's how it went.

Since you can't remember what you said and to whom, I'll remind you (from your post, #199):

Nice try, though....

haha. and playlists dont cut it.

I like to show of my iPod and make other people jealous. DX.
So maybe if I got a 64GB Touch...
8GBs would be too small for me.
What I think would be a good idea for people like me that want everything at once, and want a Touch because of it's internet, can get a 160GB - 250GB (thinking ahead) Classic, AND an 8GB - 16GB Touch.

EDIT: I'm glad you found a technique that works for you, it's just not for me.

EXACTLY! plus like I said, on the larger ipods just add a search function. simple as that

And when you're in the dark, the backlight comes on. Actually, I think it'd be easier to use a backlit touch screen in the dark than a click wheel.

Thats what they might do. but have an option in settings to turn it off to save power. though it wont kick off that much juice

I don't think anyone's forgetting you. But the solution for you is not going to be a nano, the iPod with which this thread is concerned.

huh?
