I'll bet my left nut this article has only got so many negatives because of the Zune comparison photo.

Yes, I voted negative for that reason. Not out of any hate for MS, but because the mock-up blatantly looks much, much more like the old iPod Mini than the Zune.

Maybe I missed someone else saying it, but I can't believe no-one else has noticed yet... Go and look at the old green mini and then that mock up and seriously tell me it's more like the Zune in any way other than screen dimensions. It's a silly comparison, probably designed to cause silly controversy in my opinion. That's why I voted negative on the story.

Edit: I just noticed the second comment on the ilounge story mentions its similarity to the mini! MY comments still stand though.

Personally I don't think it looks terrible (the mock up), I'm a fan of widescreen video, but I do question its usefulness in what is still primarily a music player firs and foremost.

I figure itd be easy to write the sftware to make the track wheel sensors change which way is straight up by a simple script. Using an accelerometor. Which actually makes lots of sense.

What im wondering is what about the play/pause/menu buttons??

Its possible apple makes those buttons LCD lit up...and when you rotat the device, the device senses that an re-arranges the positionin of th buttons

I think that would be pretty neat...

Yeah great idea....then they can add 50.00 to the price point? whats the point?

Urgh... I just want the 2nd gen of nano's back. A small, simple ipod with a lot of flash based storage.

I'm with you.. the form factor of the 1st gen and 2nd gen were fantastic. It was comfortable in your hand. The latest gen is just simply too small... it's pretty but not as good as the old one.

The artist's rendition looks a little odd, but the wide screen would be welcomed. Wonder what the resolution would be though...

For the classic, I bet they'll just merge the the touch and the classic together, giving users a choice of their touch with either flash memory in a thin form like the current one, or a thicker form factor with an internal hard disk drive.

I say no. Hard drives are on their way out. Prices for hard drives are continually dropping so Steve is going to want his future ipods to be all flash based. If prices are still not cheap enough he will continue to have his line up in transition mode. In other words he will not have a "classic" hard drive based player with a multitouch screen. He wants to reinforce them as old fashioned. Any future hard drive based ipod will have a click wheel.

I'll bet my left nut this article has only got so many negatives because of the Zune comparison photo.

That's exactly why. I think the screen idea is really awkward. I rather like the fatty because the form factor is perfect for the target audience. Of course, all things in due time will be revealed and Apple will develop a way for me to buy this for Christmas.

I liked my iPod nano 3G ... so did someone else 'cos they stole it.

Have been hanging on waiting for a new model since then. Either a new Touch, or a new nano. Need more than 8GB though, that was the downer with the old nano.

I think this idea is ridiculous.

I think it's more likely the iPod Nano will lose the click wheel and have it replaced with touch screen controls. It'll probably keep the name iPod Nano because it won't have all the other cool features of the iPod Touch. They'll keep it focused on just being a small music and video player... no other applications or wi-fi connection like the iPod Touch (which in addition to having less storage capacity is why it'll cost less than the iPod Touch.)

Edit: Meh, what do I know? It's what I think makes sense. But I haven't heard any rumors for anything like what I described.

thank god we're getting rid of the fatty! it was the worst ipod version so far. besides it’s bad proportions, badly balanced weight, the tapered sides didn’t persuade me at all.

i hope they also bring back a full anodized aluminium ipod. polished metal is "pretty", is shinny, but for sure isn't the right solution for something to have in you pocket right beside you car keys, prone to fall, scratches and sticky fingerprints.

if my expectation are correct, now i'll definitely buy an Ipod.
Come one apple, it’s time! :D

YUK YUK YUK YUK!!! i like the little pudgey fella, looks cute rather than a lanky thing

Yeah me too, Steve Ballmer is much better than Steve Jobs...
And I hope the new iZune comes with a movie of Ballmer on too for us all to look at...

I love my Zune and I'm going to phone God on it now and watch Lord of the Rings.... mmmm is that gravy in your ear Mrs Harlequin? WoChoo!

Mockup: Nano Touch with 3:2 screen

if you ask me, this is much better than mr. zuney in the mockup. hopefully they just go with touch instead.

I am thinking that if they do make the screen bigger it'll be turned. It only makes sense. Possibly no longer the shiny back? Maybe something like the back of the iphone wither orig. or 3g.

Is it bad to go back to the original form factor? The wide guy was neat, but there's more wasted face space, and that's not good for the footprint of the thing... Second, if the next iPod classic looks similar or has a smaller scroll-wheel, the response to this RUMOR makes me think everyone would freak out that it too looks more like the Zune.

Change is NOT bad. If this is the new form factor of the nano, just based on mechanical design (not really the shell because I believe they'd round it out like the fatty...

Pros:
Less wasted face space.
Larger screen.
Better aspect ratio (closer to 16:9)

Cons:
it looks like the previous nano

I don't know if they'd rotate the controls. The way it is now is so ingrained in everyones minds as the way it should be.

agreed, that looks pretty sweet but the odds are, i don't they're not going to do that. since its simply a thinner and smaller version of ipod touch, it just wouldn't make any sense.

i would go with the horizontal ipod nano image i've been seeing often.

It'd be easier though...It could be totally controlled with the thumb. I mean, so many people that are gamers are already used to using their thumbs to control things, and it wouldn't be hard learn. I think it actually may be easier than holding in one hand and using the finger of another...

I'd like to see the nano have a multitouch screen just SLIGHTLY smaller than the Touch's screen, with minimal surrounding frame (no wide top/bottom), no wheel, and a Home button shaped like a little spacebar built into the frame. Thinner than a Touch, with lower battery life, but it would still work like a Touch and still be much smaller than a Touch. Even if it would be a LITTLE bigger than the current nano.

Probably not possible yet, but it will be.

I absolutely love one of the earlier iPod Classic mock-ups that was shown, from searching Google. I love the way it resembles the current iMac.

I hope they dont deviate too much from the current designs, I think they've got it spot on really.

With regards to some people suggesting that the Classics will be eradicated, I highly doubt it, unless they incorporate large capacities into another model. Every single person I know owns a Classic.
I find that the average user can fill up even the higher end 16Gb model of Nano quite easily, especially when you're considering putting films on there etc.

Apple won't do this. This is the most unprogressive thing they could do. If they were gonna go with this form factor, they would have done it well before Msoft came out with the nanoish Zune.

I'm betting on possibly touch features... but things can only get so small. If we just have a little square of touch video display, how are we going to comfortably watch stuff? I guess the only thing left is a 16:9 candybar nano. Really small.. that'd be tight.
