I met an iOS engineer overseas a few months ago. He told me that whatever "rumours" you hear from WSJ come directly from Apple. Would be interesting to see a list of WSJ stories and how true they turned out to be.

Of course the nexus 7 has a smaller screen and yet it's heavier thicker and has a horrible battery life. Not the best engineering IMO.

If i have to choose beet wen two i would rather have better display (fullHD) and less battery life than other way around.

I don't have baby hands so i can make do with i little thicker pad.

But i will wait for september/october to hear if new ipad mini will have improved display. I would like to stay with Apple at this moment.

They aren't making any profit off the device. It's priced so cheaply that google is hoping people will buy one and get hooked on their software and platform and be able to sell more ads.

Profit margin is much more important to apple. It isn't about who has the better engineers" it's about how desperate each company is to get people to their operating system.

Since i am customer and not shared holder of Apple i don't give a f about apples profit. Its not like they do something special with it (they are to cheap to have bigger software team, so they move them from iOS and OS x...and result is that in autumn they could miss dead line. ). I would rather pay less for any device/food/whatever.

iPad Mini is already just right. I hope they don't change a thing for a long long time.

Do you still use VHS ? Because that was just right for its time too.

Things progress. Granted they change a lot faster now than they use to, but its an exciting time to be a tech lover so enjoy it :).

Having better engineering was not the problem for Apple. Making the mini more desirable than the 9.7" iPad was. I doubt your going to see the mini at the same $329 price point. If we do you can kiss the $500 iPad goodbye.
The Nexus 7 is so good it's forcing Apple to make a move. Plus rumor has it that the next Amazon Fire HD will be even better than the Nexus 7 at $30 less. Apple will look like complete morons without a retina display on the mini.

I did not understand...you believe ipad mini would be more or less than 330 dollars?

The nature of the rumors seem to indicate "supply chain compression" of the iPad Mini and iPad Mini Retina. The inclusion of A6 iPad mini in iOS7 indicate a release along with iPhone 5S, 5C, and iPad Retina with improved and die shrunk chip. Tick Tock.

I expect to see an early 2014 release of the iPad Mini Retina so there are two tiers of Mini product or perhaps a full replacement. Two tiers makes sense for ed price point fulfillment.

The iPhone (4, 4S) supply chain deprecation issues seem to be compliant with not only legal rulings but also a new future minimum spec level to 5+.

I will watch to see if I am close over the next 4-5 months.

What are you talking about? iPads actually went down on price compare to previous models. Retina screen did not push the price up. So that's BS.

Really? 3 years old A5 chip, subpar resolution display, 1G RAM and only 16G storage for 330 $? That right there is overpriced and in no way "premium device". You get way more better device for 30% less money.

Define "better".

Define "better".

Retina style display (1920 x 1200 with 320 dpi versus 1024 768 and 168 dpi on mini), faster and modern quadrcore snapdragon processor (for more advanced apps and multitasking) and not 2010's dual-core A5 chip on mini, better graphics, more ram (better for multitasking), lighter (290g vs 309g ipad mini), 9hours of HD (and real fullhd movie) movie playback, GPS and 30% cheaper.

it IS better

Well then, who is stoping you do buy the "way more better" devices? You don't like the price and you think it is overpriced, buy something esle and stop whining.

Id rather spend $330 for a quality product then spend £99 for a garbage.

This is why competition is good. Personally I wouldn't touch the Nexus 7 but really want to buy my daughter a 2nd gen iPad Mini for Christmas. If it didn't have a retina display I was seriously considering not getting it. However if it DOES have retina (and colours too) its a guaranteed purchase from me.

Stop stalling to spread profits out over time Apple. The mini needs to have retina.

I have a hard time believing this has anything to do with the Nexus 7. You don't just plan something like a retina display on the fly. And if Apple was having design challenges - battery life, display yields, thickness & weight, etc. - those don't just magically go away or quickly get resolved because of the Nexus 7. Only thing the Nexus 7 could have done is moved up the mini's release date but even that I find dubious as why would Apple hold off on releasing what would be an extremely successful product in the quarter where they do their most business?

The next ipad would actually cannibalise a non retina 2nd gen mini.

No one thought about that.

I feel sorry for the people that have to sell all this gear in the Apple Store.

Customer: "Hi, I'm looking for an iPad."

Apple Sales Guy: "Yeah sure. We've got an iPad 5th Generation Retina, We've got an iPad 4th Generation Retina and an iPad 2. Oh yeah, and we've got an iPad Mini Retina and a iPad Mini without Retina. But the Retina one comes in 6 different colors. Oh did I said the 5th generation bigger iPad is also available in 6 different colors? Yeah. The 4th generation is only in black and white though. So what's your favorite color? Purple? Sorry we only have pink."

Good luck with telling that story over and over and over again.

Personally i cannot see them putting a retina display in this year.If my memory seems be correct when the 9'7 inch iPad came out the next year they made it even thinner to hold and lighter. On the third generations we seen a retina display on the iPad.I think this year it going to be slightly thinner to hold again then in 2014 we are going to see retina display.

stories and how true they turned out to be.

The WSJ certainly have details of executive level info at Apple before any other outlet.. for example they were first to break the reason for Forstall's departure.

I don't think they have particular insider information, but I do think Apple give them a heads up on news releases before the general media.

I agree. The retina iPads have been compromised products and frankly don't appeal to me at all. Until they can add a retina while keeping the same form factor and weight, they may as well let it be.

i dont think with a5 chip iOS7 will run smooth enough on a fresh/newest ipad mini.
So both the rumors are right and combined result in the one product ipad mini 2 with A6 chip, quad core graphics, retina display, probably same starting price and still 16/32/64 storage and 128 keep for the iPad

Err, the 4th gen will be dropped when the 5th gen is released. The non-Retina mini will be dropped when the Retina mini comes out. The iPad 2 will no doubt be dropped at some point soon, too.

Well, they definitely have both versions as prototypes and this could be the root of the confusion. They could also go with both models, just like for iPad, retina and regular.

Apple can leak a retina display and not deliver. Apple can not announce a retina display and not deliver.

This makes sense, hadn't thought of that. If they're not far enough along to know for sure it will be coming out, then I guess they wouldn't want to lose face and promise something they couldn't deliver.
