I have the 12.9 too and have tried to figure out how I would use the new mini. I had the original and used it for audiobooks falling asleep and when on a boat or somewhere I would not want to risk the iPad Pro. Maybe gps as I don’t have cellular on the 12.9. Glad the colors are back to black, space grey and silver.

Any iPhone can take care of audiobooks and GPS, tethering to your 12.9” iPad. 🖐

An A14 is an M1 with 2 fewer big cores. Call it a M1mini for all I care. It's all just semantics. They're all the same thing.
It isn’t semantics. Just because the core architecture is the same doesn’t mean A14 = M1. That’s like saying all of Intel’s processors are the same because they’re based on the x86 architecture. They’re not.

I’d be very interested in getting one and using it together with my 12.9” to see how my usage is with having both.

Not going to put much stock in a Prosser rumor, but I REALLY hope that the next mini does indeed have improved speakers and ships before the end of the year, because that’s when I need to buy one for my in-law to use as a video phone, and the better speakers would be a massive improvement given her poor hearing.

In my incredibly specific use case that’s literally all I care about other than weight. Battery life unimportant, speed unimportant, features unimportant, lock method unimportant.

The 6(?) year old mini she has now has been genuinely life changing, even as just a simple video phone.

Looks like a great ereader when the 12.9 is too large!

Yeah, I am currently using the iPhone Pro Max to read on and I am finding it less than stellar. So if the updated Mini has a 8.5-9” display it would be perfect for books and magasines, as well as casual browsing while having breakfast and so on.

Why a new smaller apple pencil? I just want an ipad mini with the flat edge design that is compatible with the 2nd gen Apple pencil. I just want to be able to charge the Apple pencil 2 i use with my larger ipad pro the same way... by attaching it to the side. The ipad mini is long enough to accommodate the current Apple pencil 2. We don’t need a smaller apple pencil. Save that for the next iPhone perhaps. I just want to be able to use the same apple pencil on both my ipad pro & future ipad mini. As an artist who travels a lot, i’d like to be able to take an ipad mini with me that can use the same pencil. I know i can get the current mini with the old apple pencil, but i do not want two pencils...and certainly not one that charges in such an awkward un-apple like way as the first gen. Make this happen Apple and I’ll be a happy man. ;)

The problem with rumors is the lack of context. It could be a pencil 3 or it could be a second pencil 2. They could also be working on a large and small pair of pencil 3’s.

Attached the Pencil 2 to Prosser's renders. It's a tight fit. Or you lose the volume buttons or you need to move the pencil to one side. Don't think Apple would agree with either one of those options. A smaller pencil makes sense.

The iPad mini is in a weird place right now. When it came out, it was on par with the then-iPad air in terms of chips. Now it is equivalent to the most basic iPad. You pay a bit more for the laminated screen and deliberately mismatched storage sizes.

Here's what I'd like to see happen. Kill the iPad mini.

Introduce this new 'mini' as a variant of the iPad Air. iPad Pro supports two screen sizes (12.9" and 11") - make iPad Air have 10.9" and 8.9" (or whatever it is) and the latest and greatest processors (maybe not latest... skipping the odd-numbered As would be alright, not everyone updates their iPad every year). Then iPad Air starts at $499.

Rework the basic iPad and iPad mini. There were rumours of iPad getting the Air 3 chassis... lump them together (either with both having laminated screens, or neither?) and keep the old form factor around. This new mini looks great for consumers but not so great for a lot of commercial applications, or younger kids/education. Drop the price further on the current mini so they both start at $329 and it's just a screen size choice.
meh IMO just do iPad (10.5 inch EDU model), iPad Air (9 inch 11 inch) and iPad Pro 9, 11, 13).
Pro has the most options, Air is the basic, Pro has the most variety.
air and pro both offer small and mid size

this won't happen but I wish it would

The current Apple Pencil 2 is smaller than the length of the current ipad mini... so it technically could be magnetically charged on the side of the ipad mini 6 with a flat edged design. But Apple may have to move the volume buttons to accommodate it. Should be interesting to see what they do. i’ll definitely be getting one.

I bought an iPad mini 5 late last year so I’m not really in the market for a new one atm. But just like with the iPad Air 4, I do kinda want one. Especially if they announced it in different colors.
I’m starting to feel that yes, the home button does look a little dated.

(Also, obligatory “Prosser… so it’s definitely 100% true. Maybe? Perhaps?” comment)

I don’t need an iPad mini that’s essentially an iPhone Max, now with a USB-C port, that can’t make phone calls. Apple is developing new products that serve mostly to cannibalize the rest of their product base. Apple needs to focus on developing products that cannibalize the product base of their competition. Also, they need to decide whether a USB-C port is a good thing or a bad thing. It’s as if the iPad developers aren’t bothering to work with the iPhone side of the house and are even intent on competing with them and putting them out of business. Apple needs to focus on, develop and execute a coherent product plan. Henry Ford had it right. You can have any color you want so long as it’s black. Metaphorically speaking, Apple needs to pick a color. Infinite product diversity sacrifices economies of scale and results in a Tower of Babel effect.
