No way. That big of a speaker grill is begging for user damage. It's also hideous. Apple wouldn't do that.

What they would do, however, is "use what we learned" from the original MacBook Air and place a drop down port bay for built in sd card slot or usb slot or similar things that are vulnerable to getting dirty.

There's my guess!

iPad needs retina display before I purchase.

that's not going to happen for quite a while. it would be great, but not only does a 10" screen with the res required exist, the graphics chip in the current ipad is nowhere near powerful enough to constantly push that many pixels, and the next gen chip won't be superior enough to be able to do this either. its ok for the iphone because even at retina resolution it still only has around 76% of the number of pixels that the current ipad has, with the same graphics chip

If it has a camera I am getting it.

Having spent some time on one i am sold on the functionality - and the next 2 years of augmented reality will be brain melting!

Word lens blew the mind of everyone in the office!

The text on iPad shows clear pixellation even when laying flush on my lap --- the iPhone has spoiled me.

i know the feeling. it sucks hey :)

i really hope they can come up with a solution that allows them to increase the resolution as much as possible, without screwing the devs or creating a fragmented app experience.

We've been over this numerous times, people still don't understand though. :/ Apparently it should be easy to push the screen resolution of a 27" iMac on a tablet. ;)

you're gonna have to wait some years for that buddy. retina display is just a marketing term for 960x640 resolution on a 3.5 inch screen.

apportioning 960x640 to 10 inches is impossible with current technology.

But I tend to think the naysayers are overanalyzing. Apple can up the resolution and call it a "Retina display." "Retina" is meaningless marketing.

Will the resolution on the new iPad be higher than the current model? Almost surely, since the resolution on the current iPad isn't even HD. I fully expect the next iPad to have a resolution that exceeds 720p (exceeds because the iPad isn't 16:9).

what's up with apple's obsession with ginormous bezels? the iphone, ipad, and new macbook air bezel's are rather large and unsightly. ugh. and please make a 7" ipad.

the problem of increasing the resolution without doubling it is that the developers have to have images that use both resolutions. If you simply double the screen res then it works and you don't really have to change anything. the devs already have to have three sets of images for the legacy devices, the "Retina" devices and the iPad. I'm sure they don't want one more. :/

The current iPad LCD screen is great for games and videos. However, for reading it just sucks. I can see more white in the letters than the actual letter. It definitely needs a higher resolution. I am not expecting a retina display, but it definitely needs more PPI.

I disagree, I've been using it for reading (among other things) for a few weeks now, and I'm loving it.

You know that you can adjust the text size, right? :)

I'm under the impression that Apple won't increase screen resolution, but add some kind of sophisticated technology with the actual screen. I'm thinking like how they added "IPS" technology to the iPad 1st gen compared to the 3GS.

Do you have a problem reading on Mac screens too(or just general computer monitors in general)? Because every single Mac that comes with a monitor has either the same (17" MBP, 11.6" MBA) or less PPI than the iPad has.

Fail big time on the speaker position if this is truh.

We already have a speaker on the side which is not very strong, but you can make louder if you lift the iPad up edge on and look at the speaker, or you can cup your hands around it to make it louder.

So new idea, let's move it around the back of the device.

Funny. I don't remember seeing any other audio devices that want to give the user a good sound put the speakers facing away from you.

If anything I was hoping they would be able to get the sound directed more to the front of the device not round the back.

This possible design, if you used your iPad on a soft surface, such as a bed would mean you would be blocking the speakers.

Let's hope this is not true.

I'm glad to see MacRumors getting back to rumors... this rumor is pretty sad, though. Must be a slow rumor day.

I'm not buying until it shoots rainbows and smells of cinnamon rolls!!!!

How's a flush mount speaker on the back supposed to work if the iPad is lying flat on a table?

Needs to be WAY lighter w better resolution screen.

And the previous comments about an 'accurate' scale and using a fulcrum.... ha! Good stuff. Your nerd cred went up in my book.
