The speakers on the current ipad is definitely not loud enough. I feel like my iphone is louder than it sometimes.

A lot of people seem to be asking for "edge to edge glass" as a feature, which people are misunderstanding as "edge to edge screens". It is not the same, the glass of the screen on the iPhone 4, iMac and 27" Cinema Display is "edge to edge" - it has no metallic bezel around it, just the black framing. On the other hand the iPod Touch, iPhones 2g, 3g and 3Gs iPad, MacBook Pro (glossy screen) and 24" Cinema display have a minimal metallic (chrome or matte aluminium) bezel as well as the black glass. The MacBook Air does not have a glass screen at all, and the glossyness of the glass on matte MacBook Pros has been removed.

I hope this serves to inform people of what is meant by "edge to edge glass" and I would like to add that I put myself in the camp of edge to edge glass looking better than the minimal bezels found in other products.

Conspiracy Theory...

I'm really beginning to think these rumors are coming from competitors desperate to slow down Apple's own "March to the Sea". Their business models have been burnt to the ground, their inventories sacked and pillaged. So get out those rumors to try and get people to delay their purchases while feverishly trying to get a product, any product, on the shelves. General William Tecumseh Sherman, err I mean Steve Jobs, is bearing down on you and he takes no prisoners.

PS: As for the loudspeaker covers. The stuff is not wire mesh. It's material similar to the metal in electric shavers. Solid thin metal with laser cut holes.
It would however bend if you push a fingernail or something in it.

Something like this I guess ;)

A January ship date just doesn't feel right. Why would Apple release an upgrade so close after Christmas ? The iPad is one of the top items on everyones list, so they will sell a boat load of them. Why would they want to risk having all of those returns ?

Apple has previously announced updates for various iPod models, and Apple TV in January, but they don't typically ship the next day.

If Apple announces iPad 2 in January, it would probably be mid-January at the earliest to ship mid-February at the earliest.

Apple has increasingly updated products in its retail channels at the very beginning of a quarter -- I suspect to get good quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year comparisons for reporting purposes, which would tend to make the iPad 2 launch on April 1. (But I hope it's sooner.)

Have a comment/feedback on the original post.

"The outer plastic bezel surrounding the LCD screen of the iPad was seen as excessively large by some. "

This is a mis--information. I wonder if the writer has actually got his/her hands on a real iPad.

The bezel is not made by plastic. It is metal.

Besides the comment about the excessively large bezel is also nonsense if you actually use the iPad. Probably the black portion of the glass can be slightly reduced to shrink the footprint, the black portion of the glass serves a good handle for gripping the iPad. It also makes rotating the the iPad a bit easier.

I don't own an Apple TV so does anyone know whether it can stream to an iPad? If not, I see this happening very soon. Imagine you're chilling in your bedroom (that doesn't have a TV) and you want to watch the latest episode of the Office.

For that reason, I think the new iPad resolution will be equivalent to 720p or 1080p for TVs. If it doesn't happen this time, it has to happen by the next generation.

Curved back doesn't sit well, but it is more comfortable to hold.
Curved back also adds more weight and it makes iPad look thicker. Apple has been using Curved back on almost every single iPod touches and iPhones for years before iPhone 4 came out.

Truth is, people want this and people want that. And, apple don't give a crap about what people want. They will build their machines the way they want and people will still buy them.

Also, why is everyone so crying about plastic back on iPad? What is wrong with it? Motorola Tablet looks very like plastic and everyone didn't care. So, why are you so harsh on apple, but not android tablets?

Some of you are so biased.

I thought the curved back is needed to hold the batteries. In order to flatten the back you would need to make thinner and wider batteries.

Oh god here comes the wave of new iPad haters.

"oh foohie! Golly gosh darnit! Why did apple change the look of the iPad!"

Its the same people who thought the iPhone 4 was ugly and then the 3G for using a plastic back.

"golly gee - if it has cameras then I'm not buying it! It's so ugly!"

Grow up and be a real fanboy like myself.

Innovation is good. Change is good. Now shut

I think the update will be like the second apple tv.... Even more popular then the first. Much more for the money as well.

Flat? Impossible to pick off a table with one hand.

And apparently the design snobs on the forum didn't think the leaked iPhone 4 bezel was real either.

"Omg how is there a seam!?!??! Apple doesn't do seams!!!!!! Must be fake!"

Right, I noticed that too with the comments — people talking about two entirely different things.

My only argument for including a metal edge would be for durability. One of our iPod touches was dropped onto concrete, and survived with only a bit of a dent to the corner. If it had been edge-to-edge glass, the story might have ended very differently.

iPad 2

This is what iPad should have been and hopefully will be for iPad 2

I for one do not mind the the bezel. It leave room for my portfolio case to wrap around the ipad more - giving it better protection and not slide out.

Wide range speaker? Would be nice for when I am in a small classroom situation, i would not have to carry external speakers with me (I have an ultra portable projector that does not have an internal speaker. And speakers in projectors are usually mono and not all that loud enough for a larger class room / lecture hall). But larger lecture halls usually have some type of sound equipment already in them.

Flat? Impossible to pick off a table with one hand.

So picking it up from the table with one hand is more important to you than actually being able to use it on a table? To each their own I guess.

Besides, Apple could, if they wanted to, make the majority of the back flat, so that it doesn't rock around when placed on a table, but taper the outer edge enough that it doesn't suction to the desk.

I hope the bezel’s not too much smaller—it’s just wide enough for a thumb already. To make it smaller, weight matters most and thinness second. But the width and height serves a grip function.

I was sold on the theory of the Air-style port hatch for that big hole, but a larger speaker makes more sense. So—USB or SD will probably remain optional, it seems.

I agree—one-handed pickup is one thing I liked most about my first-gen Air. But I assume "flat" means like the current Touch: mostly flat, not 100% squared off. So there could still be an edge you can grab by, yet it won’t rock on the surface like the current iPad and older iPhones/iPods would.

The mockup looks like an old PowerBook lid. It should look more like the new Touch I expect. (But probably aluminum, not chrome, for scratch-resistance. For that matter, I think it’s high time the iPods lost the chrome as well. It looks great—at first!)

I take the report with salt but it’s mostly plausible.

I hate the look of the white plastic back. Make it aluminium!!!!

Isn't that some company's snap on case. Not the actual iPad.

As for the whole lay on a desk. I don't see where curved or flat makes a difference since for many folks it isn't that useable at that angle so they get a stand or a case that angles it for typing anyway

Based on the size of the connector that is definitely iPad Mini.

One. It is a rendering. I wouldn't trust it to be to scale.

Two. Jobs and boys apparently already shot down the whole iPad mini notion. It ain't happenning.

A January ship date just doesn't feel right. Why would Apple release an upgrade so close after Christmas ?

How about for all those folks that know that something better is sure to come soon so they gav Little Johnny a gift card to use when it happens.

Plus they would be launching a real product while the other teams are at CES showing their prototypes

If they do decide to do it, the 20% restocking fee

10%

And depending on the timing, managers are very good about waving it because of a new product. When one asks nicely. Or at least here in Los Angeles they are. You just have to be within th adjusted return period

Check this out - I was in the Apple store the other day and found an Incase case with the insert already in it, I got a picture from the website - check it out yourself, but it clearly has the hole for the new hardware feature on the second gen iPad.

Lol. Funny. I wonder how many folk that haven't picked up an iPad will fall for that.

I feel like a complete idiot right now.....
but can someone tell me what a bezel is?

They are talking about the black frame around the actual screen

I'm under the impression that Apple won't increase screen resolution, but add some kind of sophisticated technology with the actual screen. I'm thinking like how they added "IPS" technology to the iPad 1st gen compared to the 3GS.

The iPad needs IPS because it's often held at extreme angles... try playing a video, and having several people watch at the same time while the iPad is resting on a tabletop. Or playing a game like multi-pong.

This is one area where Apple product design is in a completely different league compared to almost any other company.

When you compare this to the existing Android tablets, it really puts them to shame... even this completely panderingly pro-Android comparison mentions how the iPad screen is better than the best Android tablet:
