I'm thinking that multitasking is being introduced and that some Android phones have 512MB of RAM. Yes, most definitely WEAK. This combined with the hideous design looks for another disappointing release.

Well, either you are right, or:

1) ALL the iPad clones fail horribly.
2) Android fails to catch up in terms of UX.
3) Tech heads around the world are taught a lesson that "Specs alone is NOT that important".

Time will tell :)

I really wish apple would put more higher end spec in their phones and other mobile devices.

The reported discomfort of the sharper edges is worrisome. And those gaps on the aluminum sides might make for excellent pocket snags/lint collectors.

My 13" unibody MBP has a sharp front edge. I've thought if filing it down to an easier radius but I don't know how much metal is there. I end up with sharp marks across my palms after prolonged use, and the corners near the cover release slot are sharp too...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

No one cares about specs. That's what I'm told here anyway! :p

On topic:
Not bad really! iPad power in your pocket! :)

Why are we assuming it'll be called iPhone 4G?

We're not assuming what it will be called, we are giving it a name that we can all use until we do know the name.

I really like the new design a lot better than pervious ones... so much more masculine looking.

I just don't get the circular buttons on the sides...

Many have suggested the separate buttons might be used by the camera.

Only 256MB of RAM? WEAK!

Not at all. Have you heard complaints from iPad users running out of memory?

You can't compare memory from one platform to another as each platform has different needs and different memory management.

What is the damn screen size?! How is this so difficult?!

How do you suggest they measure it?

Lol, this is SAD...the presentation next month won't even be any fun. They may as well move the presentation to this month and release it then.

Looking at 256mb, you might say that's a little weak, I know I thought so as well. But then I played around with the iPad and ohh myy godd, that thing is so fast to ever single touch it's ridiculous in comparison to my 3G. So for now I will stay pleased because the iPhone is smaller (i dont know if that has anything to do with it) so I assume it would be just as fast if not faster.

256MB of RAM! I guess Apple need to have a reason to update it in the future - cue iPhone 4GS.

I am still hoping that Steve is pulling a big prank (or throwing off the scent of the competition) by throwing out these brinks. This thing looks horrible.

Would you be so kind to explain what you find so horrible about the design? It's a matter of taste of course but to label it 'horrible' needs some further explanation. If this design was equal to the first gen iPhone, would you still find it 'horrible'?

256mb in 2010? Oh my. Well as long as I notice no performance issues WHATSOEVER (because of this) - then I guess I don't mind. Again though, this IS a prototype.

Filing? Good Lord.

Seams

Why is everyone so worked up over the seams? ... at least it adds a little design character. And based on the Gizmodo breakdown, the seams are a solid integration in the outer bezel, which eliminates the possibility for dust/water penetration. While everyone will sport the phone nude for the first couple of months, after the hype is over, the seams will inevitably be covered with an overpriced case for nothing more than the utilitarian purpose of keeping the phone in one piece after it hits the pavement.

They, and the metallic rim, at first reminded me of my last phone, bought more than 2 years ago (and it was not the latest model even then):

The OS was sooooo ugly. It had this "loading" animation that looked like the Knight Rider's "eye", only in red/orange gradient on a white background. I'll post an image if I can get it.

Could the glass back be one step closer to having multi-touch gestures on the back of the iPhone? I recall a patent mentioning something about the concept.

I for one love the new look and will be eager to upgrade...I really hope it will come in white though. I'm not one for cases so when I had the black 3G, I hated the way the finger prints showed up on the back...needless to say I opted for the white 3GS because of this. I might reconsider the whole case thing being this things front and back will be glass  YIKES!!! I'll have nightmares about dropping it.

What the hell are you guys on?

The current iPhone, also with 256MB memory, runs flawlessly without sluggish performance; it's very fast. The iPad has had no problems with customers moaning about 'not enough memory' errors. Even with 256MB RAM, I don't see there be ANY problems whatsoever regarding app development or even general operation of the phone.

Are you idiots or something? I'm pretty sure a big company like Apple, the very company which developed the software specifically for the hardware, know what they're doing.

Goodness me, people!

Not at all. Have you heard complaints from iPad users running out of memory?

Actually yes, yes, 1000 times yes.

Have you tried browsing in Safari on the iPad? Unlike the iPhone, where you can keep about 4+ tabs open at the same time without the device flushing the contents of previous pages, the iPad only gives you one -- maybe two if you've loaded a text-heavy page -- before previous tabs get flushed and you have to reload.

This leads to losing your place, re-reloading pages you've just loaded, and actual content destruction if you are leaving a comment (such as this) and go to another page to check something, etc.

It is, in fact, the only complaint I really have about the iPad.

If the new iPhone operates in this same manner, it's going to be a big step back for the current iPhone browsing experience. Maybe there will be an implementation that makes everything work, but considering the iPad issue and the fact that multi-tasking is coming with 4.0, 256MB is disappointing.

iPad has the same. I'm guessing you think its weak too?

I dont think, I know. The lacking RAM is my only complaint about iPad. Open more then 4 tabs in Safari? They will reload and lose your place on the page. It sucks.

This isnt a demand for "More mega giga bullet points on the spec list" this is recognition that a premium product like the iPad or iPhone should not expose its working to the user. It should not run out of RAM and have to reload pages when it can just cache that to disk or simply have enough RAM that it isnt an issue.

Apple was cheap here and it shows.

Only 256MB of RAM? WEAK!

It runs the same, actually less powerful apps, than the iPad. Why would they add more RAM to the phone?

Remember, 2GB RAM in a Mac > 2GB RAM in a PC due to better memory management in the Mac. Just like with multi-tasking, I'm sure Apple has worked out the details.
