I believe everyone who is whining should remember these are just rumors.

Also keep in mind there have always been multiple different models of iPhones and iPhone Touch's.

The latest updates to the Touch included a "basic" model and then two superior models for more money (including better graphics and storage).

Apple also has been getting in the habit of releasing product in a newer design but keeping the old specs the same with a few tweaks, (look at the Macbook).

This could just be (speculation) a remake of the 3GS in the newer form. This way they can continue to offer a "basic" model like the Touch and then have more "superior" models to those that whine about everything. Why manufacture the older model and keep it in production when you have a newer form design and a new processor (A4) for all models. Transfer it all to one uniform design and keep one "basic".

So many things to consider and so many people jumping ahead of themselves and making conclusions without all the facts. Lets just wait to see what the announcement is. Less than one month away (hopefully).

Replacing "whining" with "showing concern", and we agree.

I really wish apple would put more higher end spec in their phones and other mobile devices.

Welcome to every Mac user's request, ever (myself included). Add me into the choir of people complaining about only 256 MB of RAM. 512 MB of RAM is dirt cheap nowadays. There's no excuse to not have at least that much. On that note, everything else about this new phone seems to be pretty damn awesome. Can't wait for it.

It runs the same, actually less powerful apps, than the iPad. Why would they add more RAM to the phone?

Remember, 2GB RAM in a Mac > 2GB RAM in a PC due to better memory management in the Mac. Just like with multi-tasking, I'm sure Apple has worked out the details.

Is that a joke? OS X LOVES to eat RAM up. Yeah, it runs smoother than butter when it has enough, but when it doesn't? Ugh.

screen size would be FAIL!

I would expect at least a 3.7" screen. 4.0" would be perfect! A hair smaller than 3.5" = FAIL!

They don't want competition for the iPad.

And 256 MB RAM is sad. How expensive could it possibly be? $4.00?

The battery life is hopefully a big upgrade.

Perhaps another step towards a greener apple with a more recyclable phone.

I'm sure it will get at least a slide when Steve finally gets to release it.

At this point, and especially since it's coming from a Taiwanese source, this is most likely coming off the assembly line and not some "lost" prototype.

I can't wait to get this phone. I stuck with my 3G anticipating a much better bump with this year's iPhone than the 3GS. Looks like all my hopes and more are confirmed. This thing is going to scream with an A4 processor, and I actually really like the new look. By all indications this should be a really solid device.

Agreed but..........Taiwanese source? Where??

They, and the metallic rim, at first reminded me of my last phone, bought more than 2 years ago (and it was not the latest model even then):

The OS was sooooo ugly. It had this "loading" animation that looked like the Knight Rider's "eye", only in red/orange gradient on a white background. I'll post an image if I can get it.

I can't bring myself to look at the front of this for long but I do want to see Knight Rider's "eye" :D

I too hoped for more RAM, but only in the way so developers have more space to work with. But limiting it to 256 mb also has a benefit: developers are kinda forced to create proper, clean code and in this case 256 mb (with proper coded apps) will work great.

Ok...Iphone HD

Iphone HD, 32-64Gig, 5.2mpix camera, 420hrs standby, 14hrs talktime, 36hrs audio, 13hrs video, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi N......

Apple's going for pocketability here. It's a very sleek package, but I must say that the screen size is the most disappointing spec here for me too. If it was 3.7" I would buy it launch day without any hesitation, but as it isn't, it's not an instant buy for me and I'll be looking around a lot harder than I usually would for a something else.

I bet its not clocked at 1GHz either...700/800MHz if anything. Probably still 600/650 MHz.

256MB makes me worry, i know it works well for the most part in the iPad but the iPad hasn't got multitasking and you can already see the effects of the small RAM because Safari reloads everything instead of caching and then there's the not enough memory errors. Add multitask and all other goodies of OS 4.0 and i start to wonder...

No real changes over the 3GS save for the new cams. It even has a smaller sized screen it seems...granted its a higher res one.

I need to add, the "Metallic rim" is actually gray plastic painted silver. And wears off easily. This thing didn't quite last the 2 years it was supposed too (the battery ended up almost completely dead). In the end I switched to a 3GS after 14 months, and paying a fine around 80 usd, spread through several monthly bills.

I only miss the 5Mpx camera.

So no real superiority over the 3GS save for the new cams.

Congrats on falling for the MHz myth. There is a TON of optimization that has been done with the A4 for power savings and speed.

C'mon... How much bigger can it get while staying "phone-size"?

I actually hope Apple clocks the new iPhone chip to the same speed as the 3GS just for speed comparison sake considering the rest of the hardware seems to be the same.

Take the HTC Desire for example with its 3.7" screen.

It measures up at 11.9mm thick, 60mm wide, 119mm tall.
The iPhone 3GS is 12.3mm thick, 62.1mm wide and 115.5mm tall.

Pretty much nothing in it.

EDIT: Actually the Droid Incredible goes one step further being 11.9mm thick, 58.5mm wide, 117mm tall yet still housing a 3.7" screen.

Exactly. My iPad has no issues whatsoever with memory. And I have had four pages open on Safari. No sluggishness.

One thing to remember- that Droid that everyone loves and admires only has 256mb RAM as well. My business partner's Droid is overclocked but honestly, I see no difference comparing it to a Nexus One.

The new Andoid kernel in 2.2 will unlock more of the Nexus One's memory. So for the next month the results will seem similar when comparing to an overclocked Milestone (Canada and Europe) / Droid (US).

Sorry I just felt the need to point that out. Don't know why.
