telephoto/Portrait Mode - MOST Definitely YES

AirPods - NO [(because they are a product of their own) & YES (because you don't need an iPhone to use them).]
NO. The W1 chip is by no means a gimmick, and in as much as Apple removed the headphone jack, an essential feature to ameliorate the deficit. Further, the fact that they work on other BT devices is a plus.

Sounds great. I can not wait until my 12 month are over and I can update again. That 13 months cycle is great!!! <3

No company replaces their water resistant devices if customers device messes up from water. Itll never happen, Samsung doesnt do it, no one does..
Depends as I know someone had an Apple Watch series 2 replaced as the water resistance failed at around 1 meter swimming

i totally disagree with you. a mobile device that is more resistant to water is more useful. period. not gimmick.

thin is much more gimmick. i would rather have 1 mm thicker and 20% more battery. but that's me.

waterproofing is becoming mandatory. a standard. no reason not to apply it and improve it.

I've never needed any sort of waterproofing personally. While it may be of use to some, waterproofing itself on a phone is more of a gimmick in my mind...just the same as the crazy obsession of thinness over battery life or real features. The amount of time and manpower they spend on this could be redirected to something more useful...say...new Macs???

False advertising that its not covered under warranty or is it that Apple cannot prove and respect the warranty if the customer exceeded the IP67 rating. Hard to say really this is why I believe Samsung IP68 also does not cover water damage. Notice Apple warranty cover dust penetration, however not water. I am with Apple and Samsung on this one. Unless you can prove it with a video and/or picture date and stamp, I guess it is a possibility.

Needing a headphone jack more than water resistance. I listen to music more often than holding my iPhone into the rain, pool or toilet :-/

Poopfies, lmao. For those drunken nights you take out a picture of what you ate, then how you partied hard, and the outcome of said party. It is a vidlog as you will not have remembered any of it. That is when the phone drops into the toilet bowel. :D

I suspect Apple will use the same magnetic charging option that has been implemented on the Apple watch to use on the iPhone 2017 model. Remove the lightening cable for charging, data transfer and audio playback. Use the Apple logo to magnetically charge, data transfer and if there is vision audio-playback (not done with the Apple Watch). This will make the phone completely ingress free. Only the Speaker and Mic will remain and Apple will use the Apple Watch 2 technology for the mic option and some ceramic resonate for the speaker. Phone of the future.

Will ip68 mean actual warranty against water damage or still nah?

Apple will cover the dust penetration under warranty unless people are using a sandblasting gun on their phone, in which case the casing will be ruined. Water damage cannot be proven if you exceeded the IPx7 or IPx8 limit.

I can easily claim water-damage due to IPx8, however used it under water at 3 meters and for 1 hour. Prove it that I actually did this Apple, give me a new phone. See it will not work, hence the limitation on the warranty for water damage. I agree with Apple and Samsung on this, unless that device says waterproof.

Add this to the list of features I simply could not care about. Everything with Apple products these days are gimmicks, not advancements.
If you don't need or use a feature it does not mean it's a gimmick. Water residency is quite useful for a device you bring 24/7 with you.

Does it mean that they will get rid of the lightning port now?

I hope so, just adopt the same magnetic connector that the AppleWatch uses and you are set. This way you can wireless charge it even with a charging pad if you please. Have it open for data/audio as well.

Nice to have, not really a selling point. Similar to having stronger scratch resistance glass that reflects less light and a casing that is easier to grip. I would not base my purchase on something being IPxx, just a cherry on the top feature.

Euh.. so I thought the 7 was resistant. I took it into a swimming pool and took great pics and movies :) No problem.

The iPhone 7 can already handle more depth than Samsung's Galaxy S7, even though the iPhone has a lower rating.

See this test:

Apple is just more careful, i.e no burning phone in your pocket.

And you actualy believe all these youtube videos? Lol

The camera men will only show you what they want you to see, just like any other youtubers. Lmao. Cant believe people still watch videos like this and BELIEVE it lmoa.

People calling waterproofing a gimmick should also stop buying insurance.

What about people like me that never buy phone insurance?

I don't think it's a gimmick but it also doesn't excite me or motivate me. In fact, I bought a 7 over the water resistant plus. The pluses camera excited me but ultimately still find it too big.

Possibly. The Lightning port is eventually going away, and not being replaced by a USB-C port either. The last opening in the iPhone will likely be the sim card tray if Apple is unable to persuade carriers to migrate toward software sims, and make international roaming rates reasonable. But the SIM tray is the easiest to waterproof, so not as critical as a port that's exposed to the exterior, with moving parts, and requires multiple connects/disconnects daily.

The Lightning port could go as early as the next iPhone if the rumors are true that contactless wireless charging is coming. There will still be a physical port for hardware resets and headphones, but it will be of the magnetic inductive variety like the SmartConnector, or Apple Watch. Whether this happens on the next iPhone, or in 2-3 years depends solely on that rumor being true. Apple may decide to remove the Lightning port on the new flagship Plus model, keeping an iPhone 7s around for another year before it removes the ports from iPhones altogether.

How would then people charge their iPhones where iPhone wireless charger (whatever this is) is unavailable (for example - on the airplane)

Actually, that's exactly how it is. Check out a recent WSJ article that explains how Apple's structure works: they aren't organized by product line, but basically by profession. For example, the OS coders work on macOS, iOS, and watchOS as a group...there aren't distinct groups for each one. That's why when a large overhaul of iOS occurs, macOS languishes for a while.

While it would be fun to search the Internet for what you're talking about, could you please cite what you're talking about, and then I can understand why you said what you did.

My experience with macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS is that they all come out pretty closely together, so while it may be true that they are organized by profession, I can't imagine how 10,000 engineers working would all be focused on waterproofing the phone, then switch gears to making a new iMac, then on to a new iPad like kids going after the ball in a second grade soccer game.

So basically - IP68 unless water damages it, at that point it is not Apple's problem and you pay for it o_O
A non feature - Apple should just not say anything at all.

So reading the initial comments I assume that many think this is BS. So I suppose Apple should to waste their time on this. Because, after all, who would want their phone to survive falling in some water or a serious spill (from a pet, toddler or an adult)?
Consider however, if Apple didn't advance the iPhone's water resistance it would be roundly criticized by the same people.
It's like the constant bashing of Siri. Sure Siri had flaws and some voice recognition problems that Apple continues to refine. However I find myself using it more and more. It fetches recipes for me. Adds things to my shopping list. Have it play certain songs etc and even select movies for my granddaughters on Apple TV. I have to say I'm impressed. It works extremely well. (Imagine that, doing all those things without Alexa or Echo).

Some of you just can't be pleased. Others just post here to whine or bash. It must be a personality disorder of some sort. Seek help.

That should be the case for the galaxy s7 also.

I agree, all Youtube videos only show what the video editor wants you to see. None of them are believable.

huh? they wouldn't lie for the sake of it. Alot of the top youtube reviewers are fans just like anybody else they just get paid for giving reviews.

everythingapplepro for one wouldn't do a test and then if something went wrong they wouldn't just edit it out. If anything it would get him more attention if it did go wrong.

They have no reason to lie.

The whole point is that these designs have passed the tests and is either IP67 or IP68 certified. There is never a GUARANTEE that the device will not break due to water damage, what if the phone has had previous damage that lessens how waterproof it is, completely out of Apples control? The whole point of this rating is to show to customers that they are officially certified to this level of standard. Its not a gimmick, its not TRYING to be anything. It is what it is, and its better than not having it at all.

Everyone expects so much these days... A year since the iPhone 6s Plus, the iPhone 7 Plus brought us:

- New dual camera setup with features like optical zoom, portrait mode and better low light tech
- Quad LED Flash
- A large battery
- A brighter, more color accurate wide color display
- Stereo Speakers
- IP67 Water resistance
- Doubled storage for the same price
- The first quad-core A series chip - faster and more power efficient
- Faster wifi and bluetooth
- 7mp Facetime camera

All 12 months after the previous release. And people role their eyes and say Apple is doomed.

Everyone needs to look at the big picture, appreciate what amazing technology we do have, not what we don't have yet.

So Touch ID, Apple Pay, telephoto/Portrait mode, 3D Touch, the Taptic Engine, and AirPods are all gimmicks. What exactly *do* you want to see Apple do that other companies are doing?
Integrated BluRay and RiceCooker.
[doublepost=1484355032][/doublepost]
there was water behind the screen and the flash was stuck on, clearly shorting because of the water immersion.

I took it to an Apple store, fully expecting I would have to pay the replacement cost for it, but the genius gave me a replacement, saying he "noticed the mute button wasn't working quite right" - which was funny as the phone was pouring water out the bottom.
Truly a genius. :)

So basically - IP68 means you're less likely to find yourself with a water-damaged iPhone if you get caught in a rainstorm, or drop your phone in the pool, or a fountain, or kitchen sink, or toilet.

Not a "non-feature" at all.

It's like having a cellular radio that picks up many frequencies versus one that only picks up a few. The one with more frequencies will be more likely to find a signal in more places. But it's not a guarantee that you will always get a signal. By your logic, Apple may as well use the one with less frequencies, because they can't guarantee a signal everywhere.
