Wait...so if we wanna use apps we have the now on our current phones there going to appear blurry/pixelated? And to get a nice sharp crisp lookin app we'll need to buy new apps with the HD title like ipad? That sucks! All the developers should be made to update their apps to the proper resolution of thr current iphone and if we decide to buy it then it should be compatible with both iphone/ipad! Its just getting confusing now :( and who wants to pay for two apps which are essentially the same app ? :(

No, "old" apps will not be blurred. And if you think about it for a second, you'll know why :) Both iPhones have the same screen size, so if you pixel-quadruple a low-res app, it will just look like on a iPhone 3GS, because four pixels on the new device will be just the same size as one pixel on the new device!

Is there anything we *aren't* gonna know about the next iPhone?! :(
I don't wanna know in advance. I like surprises! :)

Then go hide in a closet.

Surprise is what you don't want with electronics, that way you can be an educated consumer and not an emotions fanboy. :D

well it will be able to play 720p i believe just no display all the pixels...

honestly 720p on a 3.5 inch device is a little over kill i won't be able to tell the difference anyway.

cool, no more SD/HD media in my iTunes. All HD, here we come (allowing for the loose use of the 'HD' moniker anyway...)

Does anybody else realize that this iPhone will also bring with it the ugliest iPod ever?

I simply won't touch either. I don't care of the features. The looks and shape and all has completely turned me off.

I waited to get the iPhone until it could do one thing, record video. The 3Gs did that, I bought it, I'm damn happy.

So long, precious looks :(

Well I think the new design is super hot. But one just can't argue about design. Either you like it or you don't.

I don't care that it's ugly, it's that it doesn't have Johny Ive's regular eye-catching looks.

Who can turn away from an iMac G4 or an iPod Touch?

Negative?!?

How do people rate this post as negative?! I hope you just slipped and clicked on the wrong button.

People that claim images look blurry unless they're in native resolution are talking out of their poonoonoo.

I play games at all resolutions, and besides the pixelation caused by no anti-aliasing and low resolution, there is NO blurring or anything like that. With AA all the way up, you'd never know it was at a lower res.

Reminds me of when people talk about how effective the 5.57mm NATO round is. When a commie takes one to the chest, I don't think they're going to care what caliber it was.

Well said, at the speed of the round and as it bounces inside their chest, its over no mater what fanboy of a 7.56 mm round they may be. :D

I always was a little bothered about skipping 3GS upgrade, but I am looking forward to this next model, so it will all be worth it.

Well, a bigger screen would make surfing the net, using video chat, and reading books on it better/easier. And the iPhone doesn't have to increase in size much if they just move the earphone piece/front facing camera further to the edge, and the home button smaller and rectangular. They then could use the extra real estate for a bigger screen.

No, that's the point, video chat/Internet are made easier by having higher resolution screens, reading a book also if you scale your font accordingly.

A lower DPI screen never helps with screen real-estate, that's a common misconception of people who don't understand screen technology.

4.3" at 960x640 vs 3.2" at 960x640 gives you the same information on screen.

While 960 X 640 certainly doesn't meet TV HD requirements, (which is fine since it's NOT A TV) it will certainly meet my personal definition of "high definition" and be clearer than... well almost ANYTHING, since it will have so many pixels on a 3.5" screen as opposed to a 50" screen of a TV. The pixel density will be out of this world. Can't wait.

If they do end up calling this new phone the "iPhone HD" I'm going to really laugh when everyone around here, predictably, thinks nothing of it, and calls it the best thing ever. Yet, when the "Zune HD" comes out, everyone here laughs at its screen and notes that it isn't HD.

I don't think anyone here cares or ever comments about the Zune any more, so don't worry. Microsoft could announce the Zune printed gold bars and nobody would care, that is how irrelevant it has become.

Let's just hope the next iPod touch also gets the same display. And (finally) a camera to take pictures and record video too. And the GPS and compass would be nice too.

If this is indeed true then the rumours that the new iPhone will have the "HD" moniker do seem very plausible.:)

{On a separate note-I'm glad to see new rumours being posted on a 'three day weekend'. For a moment there I didn't think there would be anything new on MR until late monday/Tuesday. My goodness I'm addicted to this site.)

It must be hell running this site: we all need our fix! Thanks, thanks, to those mysterious beings who brighten our days with Mac Rumors!

Oh I know that the DPI would go down a little, but with the larger screen you can scale stuff to be bigger. You'd also get more finger touch real estate to work with.

I would prefer they cycle back around and just call it "iPhone".

They don't make the original ones any more, they have had entire product lines that did not have generational names... so why not circle back around instead of trying to come up with some kind of clever add on to it?

Do we really have to be able to distinguish a 1st gen iPhone versus a 4th gen?

Just "iPhone" would be cool.

That's nice, I guess, but I never looked at my screen and thought it wasn't sharp enough.

To be honest, I'd rather have a bigger screen. Keeping the screen so small and doubling the resolution seems a bit more like a marketing gimmick than a major benefit.

I guess their priority is not fragmenting the App Store between different versions of programs for old and new iPhones with differently proportioned screens. At this point the App Store is what really differentiates the iPhone from Android competitors, they're probably afraid of messing with its success.

I for one love the new design..... It's like the iPhone finally got up from the kids table and joined the adults. SO much more classy and refined. Gone is shiny plastic and chrome replaced with aluminum and glass. Not to mention the flat sides will be so much more secure in the hand. I can't freakin wait.

No, but you sure sounded cool saying it! Apple is trying to get the reading/viewing experience of printed page, that is the point of the higher res/same size screen.

Can someone explain how the iPad at 1024x768 pixel doubles the same as a 960x640 device?

This phone is going to be sick. Top that off with 4.0 and you my friend got the best phone on the market. FTW:eek:
